England complete their end of season tour with a resounding 5-0 win away to USA in Los Angeles in June 1985. Gary Lineker and Kerry Dixon both score twice, with Trevor Steven completing the scoring and Glenn Hoddle having a penalty saved. England goalkeeper Chris Woods keeps a clean sheet on his international debut.

Woods was probably England's best goalkeeper between 1985 -1990. As number two to Shilton I don't think he even conceded a goal in his 10 odd games. Could have easily been our number one. When he did get his chance after Shilts retired he was slowly on the way down.

I moved to the US from the UK in the early 80’s and soccer was non existent on TV. I had to explain all about the game to my co-workers who only knew NFL, NBA and baseball. The American commentary on TV was abysmal because they had to dumb it down for the audience. Thankfully, the game has come a long way with the help of the EPL on national TV. It still has a long way to go. It’s like trying to get British viewers to watch baseball instead of cricket. When you’ve been brought up with a sport its in your culture.

They clearly were at the very edge of scoring during the first minutes of the game. They weren't as bad as you made them out to be, they just lacked the mental resilence recquired to play this sport. Most American sports scores often go up to 90 points a game for each team. That doesn't happen in soccer, a goal can kill the game, specially against a European or South American powerhouse, and you have to train mentally as much as you do physically to overcome the burden and try to revert things. These boys clearly knew what they were doing but didn't know how play the game.

On his day, few could compare with his passing ability. Nigel Clough came close. The problem was that, like many England players, he was inconsistent and didn't necessarily produce his best form at the very top level. I think he did okay in the World Cup of 86 without excelling in the way one might have hoped. I think he was more prominent in 1990 but I would have to check as the memory is fading. Had he reproduced this kind of form against the top sides, England might have faired a lot better but then that is the key, isn't it? When people recall Beckham's best moment, it is in a qualifier against Greece to get us through, not in one of the actual tournaments itself. And after his first tournament in Portugal ( where Owen's reputation took a lot of heat off him ) Rooney did precious little in any subsequent tournaments, amassing one goal from the rest of those he played in.
