Had the same issue with bottled water (because we were cautioned about the condition for their tap water as visitors) while visiting an island in the Caribbean. 4 of us, each 3-4 bottles, water totaled ~$60 while our food was ~$20

Charging per soda cup is bullshit because in a 2 liter bottle of coke the plastic bottle costs more to make than the soda soda is like 12 cents per cup 6 bucks for a soda is ridiculous

The waiter in the first one knew you were american and took advantage of you, then proceeded to try and shame you and your country. He knew you were american and offered refills knowing it was customary in your country for them to be free. He lied through omission and then shamed you for what you didn't know which he purposefully never told you.
