I wore that helmet for many years. In 1986 we switched to PASGT from the M1 steel helmet and in 2006 we switched to the MICH Kevlar helmet. We referred to the PASGT as the K-pot because it was Kevlar and the M1 was always called a steel pot. K-pots work. They have saved a number guys over the years.

Nice helmet John I liked the brief history you gave on the properties of the helmet. 👍👍

Cheers James, I'm probably not 100% correct, it's just the way I 'believe' that kevlar works, I'm not far off I reckon. There is a youtube channel 'Mike B ' who used to do a lot of ballistic tests on helmets. It is very interesting seeing the results 🙂🙂

I remember these from the 1980s, classic American helmet and just looks so good with the M81 cover. They may have seen combat in Grenada, but if I recall rightly, they were actually first worn by members of the 82nd Airborne in REFORGER 82 (Autumn 1982). They were fielded with USAREUR by 1984 / 85 with the 'Fritz' tag causing some amusement with the Bundeswehr and upsetting some German politicians and TV folk at the time!

Cheers Al, you know me and my 'Wikipedia ' research 🤣🤣. Yes it must of caused a stir when it was first used in Germany. I did start watching a short documentary later on about Grenada and the US troops had M1 helmets on???....thanks again 🙂🙃🙂

We NEVER said PASGT, ever. It was simply a kelvar helmet. Get your kelvar, put your kelvar on etc. First issued this in 1984 Germany. Cats eyes nothing to do with preventing friendly fire. Simply follow the guy in front of you in extreme dark conditions.

Cheers and thanks for the information m8, good to hear from someone who actually used the kit....with me being just a collector I wouldn't know this so when I'm looking into items I invariably use the 'official' or 'technical' name.....anyway thanks again and all the very best to you....🙂🙂🙂

I have one of those with a chocolate chip cover from the First Gulf War it’s probably my favourite helmet

Thanks , yeh it's a very solid item and I reckon the protection its gives would be first rate. I've got the British period equivalent of the period also...well I've got 4 mk6 helmets, but I reckon the mk6a is similar in protection to the PASGT....I've got a mk6A also....thanks again and all the best 🙂🙃🙂
