Both sides looked physical in this one. Neither was aggressor or victim. My takeaway is that game advisors are underequipped to quickly and accurately resolve disputes. It's understandable that players get tilted in close high level games. It's a very emotional experience.

A close, hard-fought game, in windy conditions, with both teams making errors and hard bids. USA were a tad more clinical (happy Torres made up for her drop, What a stalwart!). That USA outside-in BH huck on the FH side and sky grab were clutch, worthy of the win. USA showed their quality, also good spirit in the end to retract the O foul call on Manu's cut, admitting the whole game had been played at that intensity to that point. Well done both teams!

USA Player #8 twice trucks/drives thru the backs of Columbian players. At 48:26 Columbian player #14 Uribe is injured and ends up permanently leaving the game (she is interviewed at halftime) and then at 2:06:14 #33 Cardenas is injured and forced to leave the game at a crucial point. I don't think #8 on the USA had a reasonable defensive play in either situation. This was a great game overall many amazing plays.
@northwolfАй бұрын
#14 Uribe was injured on that play from her slamming her left elbow into the ground as a result of her own dive, not from any contact from USA player #8. I watched it several times in slow motion, and there is hardly any contact at all from USA Player #8 against the Colombian player. The USA player is diving and reaching at the disc, and dives so that she largely avoids making any significant contact with the Colombian player, and actually appears to touch the disc before the Colombian player touches the disc. The contact with the Colombian player was fairly minimal, and did not cause the Colombian player to get injured. Yeah, you could argue that the Colombian player was "caused" to dive and fall to the ground because of the USA player's action there...but it wasn't like the USA player pushed her to the ground. It was more of a case of the Colombian player being forced to reach and extend out to try to catch the disc due to the pressure applied by the USA player, and by reaching and extending herself it caused her to have to make the decision to dive down to the ground as well. A very similar thing happened with the play when #33 for Colombia injured herself. She was injured from her contact with the ground after diving, not from any contact from #8 of USA. The contact that occurred from #8 of USA was very minor, and did not contribute to the fall to the ground or injury by #33 of Colombia. And #33 of Columbia initiated her dive for the disc before that minor contact occurred.

Great game. USA put in physical contact in the end part of the game which unfortunately turned this final into their victory. I feel sorry for the Columbian team but this is the way how the game is instructed now. We are coming closer to the moment when referees are needed - not only game advisors who do not have the power what would be needed.

Just watching the first point at USA 3 Colombia 2 # 20 for Colombia travels every single time she catches the disc and you never know what her pivot foot is.Those baby steps should be called what they are and that is "Travel!". Their handler in the bleach blonde hair is really good but she also refuses to establish a proper pivot foot. At this level, I expect more but am not going to delude myself as I've been following this sport for years and the higher level the competition the traveling seems to get ignored. Good win for the US women's team to finally beat the upcoming Colombian women.

Colombia women players are beastly at Ultimate Frisbee and it's shown in this match. They're SO fast and creative with cuts where most of the time USA players can't keep up, thus contact and pick calls resulted in it. I don't condone to contact calls but this is just an observation I make. Colombia women ultimate frisbee players stay dear to my heart and I love their playstyle!

Agree with commentator, Trop defo charged Cardenas at 1:05 . Trop was looking behind at disc though, maybe she thought Cardenas was moving lateral so probably not intentional, but defo offensive foul.
@hera9191Ай бұрын
Exactly, Trop was not aware about Cardenas position, Cardenas read Trop motion well.
@northwolfАй бұрын
@@hera9191 @steffen1405 It was called on the filed as a foul on Cardenas, and she accepted and did not contest that she fouled Trop. It looks like a clear defensive foul to me, with Cardenas making a change in direction and jumping in Trop's path in the split second before impact. If you watch at 1:05:10 in slow motion (at 0.25 playback speed within KZbin settings), you see Cardenas initially moving to her right and Trop sees this and then cuts to HER right slightly (so as to avoid running into Carndenas), but at the last moment before the collision Cardenas then plants her right foot and cuts back hard to her left directly in the path that Trop was running, appearing to want to deliberately get in Trop's way and stop Trop from running past her, and Cardenas is the one who puts her hands up defensively/aggressively first, as she knows the contact is coming before Trop does.
@steffen1405Ай бұрын
Only Cardenas knew contact was coming because Trop was looking back over her shoulder. If you look carefully, Cardenas does not lift up her left foot, so she can't have moved left into Trop's path. She lunged right, (which Trop may have seen and assumed was her running), then retracted the right foot back. It is Cardenas' prerogative as a defender to return to stand vertically (over whichever foot they want) and for the offensive player to avoid contact. As she explained, she didn't actually move, and is under no obligation to take an additional step. Given more time, a D player in that position, seeing contact incoming, should ideally give way and call Violation Dangerous Play. Unfortunately, in our sport, defenders need to accept that a down field cutting O foul often has little consequence anyway, stall resets if accepted.. contested has no impact on the game.. anyway I'm sure these 2 players still respect each other.

@@steffen1405 YES, Cardenas did move back to her left. She was initially moving to her right, and then plants her right foot very hard to stop and then moves her upper body back into the path of Trop. There is no reason for Trop to initiate that collision. She was going to run by Cardenas and get open. Cardenas had the motivation to stop Trop by fouling and running into her, to prevent Trop from running by her. Also, for the record....Trop called the foul here, and Cardenas ends up not contesting and accepting the foul -- accepting that she (Cardenas) was at fault. We can hear the audio of Trop and Cardenas discussing the foul call immediately afterwards (at 1:05:55), and Trop says explicitly that Cardenas "jumped her laterally and I could not avoid that contact".

I was going for Colombia on this one..... love their play style and wanted them to get gold :-( But...I will say....watching this entire match after the Insta post from Colombia's coach makes me call BS on "how terribly aggressive" the USA women were. Nah. Both teams made bids; some rightful fouls called; some others retracted (rightfully). But I actually thought the Colombians were just as "dangerous" or "aggressive" as the USA squad. Only truly BAD moment, imo, was when Trop changed direction and ran (hard) into Cardenas ....and then didn't retract. Yes, the injury in the last minute sucked for Colombia, but it wasn't an egregious foul. it was a risky but fair bid, esp when you look at the various angles. IT'S EXACTLY THE KIND OF BID COLOMBIA'S PLAYERS WERE MAKING ALL GAME, and its the kind of bid that ALL DEFENSES make when games are on the line. Anyways, congrats to USA although I'm really bummed Colombia lost....

If you slow down the Trop Cardenas collision it's pretty clear that Manu steps into the line, plants and squares up to initiate the contact. There was no benefit to Trop from the incident, she was going to leave Manu in the dust so Manu took the "professional foul" to disrupt Team USA's momentum.
@ryanj3165Ай бұрын
Yeah I thought that at first. But my issue was she changed direction into Cardenas. There’s a clear change in her line, no?

There is a subtle sweep right by Trop which would have avoided contact except Manu then plants a big right foot, moves left and forwards into the contact.

@@ryanj3165 Trope's change of direction isn't subtle. It's somewhere between a 60 and 90 degree change of direction (closer to 60). The overhead replay from 105:42 to 48 shows the trajectory clearly. Trope is initially running in a path to pass Cardenas on the left (as looking downfield) and at 105:46 Trope plants hard with her left foot and cuts 60 degrees to try and pass Cardenas on the right. 1:05:10 For all the complaining by the Columbian coach about the level of physicality, watch Manu square up and initiate the contact! I've been trying to find anything dirty by Team USA but really not seeing anything but a well drilled squad playing some tight fris. Colombia on the other hand pushing defenders, grabbing at the offense, constantly running lines through the stack that generate picks, and, showing absolutely no understanding of what a pivot is.
@lite__6500Ай бұрын
I'm finding it hard to understand how someone initiates contact by being planted, while the other player runs through that person but is not initiating contact. I personally take no favorites on this game, but that play from my perspective is on USA, you can't go through a player that is already there
@mariemitchell7789Ай бұрын
@@lite__6500 on the overhead replay from 1:05:42 to 47, you can see Trope change direction and run directly into Cardenas. Looking downfield, Trope is initially running in a path that she will run past Cardenas to the left of Cardenas. At 1:05:46 Trope plants hard with her left foot and cuts right trying to start a new path such that she will run past Cardenas to the right of Cardenas (as looking downfield). Unfortunately Cardenas' body is in the line of that new path. Trope runs directly into Cardenas and then calls a foul on Cardenas. Trope accuses Cardenas of doing exactly what Trope has just done. I ran the video at one quarter speed and paused every few frames. Very easy to see.

It's not possible to simultaneously square up and initiate contact. One or the other. When Trope changes direction, Cardenas squares up and braces for contact. As far as dirty play, I'm not sure it was dirty, but #8 on USA injures two players on Columbia that she's guarding at 48:26 and at 2:06:14 both times she doesn't come close to a block but crashes into the Columbia players backs.

The pick rule separates ultimate from contact sports like basketball and American football. Those of us that have been playing this sport in the beginning of this sport support that rule and in this game I did not see any bad pick calls by the USA. " It simply rewards poor defending." I dare say using your own player to use as a shield to get open is not "poor defending" on the defense but cheating by the offense as it reads in the rules book.

You obviously do not know the rules of this sport. You cannot intentionally run close to your own player or another player to get open. As simple as that. I've watched the Colombian Women's team a few times and while they are the 2nd best team in the world they get away with murder by never holding a pivot foot and constantly resort to BS calls to sway the results. I've also played against Colombians here in Latin America and they also resort to fake injuries and rough play until you call them on it and then they claim victim. Just read the book on the rules and try to get a grip on the reality of a self officiating game where trying to cheat is frowned upon by both sides playing....well at least it should be.
