Cuba's experience is truly admirable. A completely small and modest country in its area, population and wealth compared to USA, and yet it has the potential to offer this high level of athletes.

I used to look forward to these country-versus-country boxing meets. Some network ought to bring them back.

The U.S. doesn't have much of a boxing program anymore. There used to be those city-city meets.. NYC, Chicago, Philly, Cleveland, St. Louis, LA, New Orleans, San Francisco.... talent all over the place. I miss those too.

The problem is Back when these guys fought they would cheat the Americans... So they came up with a system that cheats them even worse so Amateur boxing is almost a thing of the past..Cuz it’s some bias crooked crap

@@javiernegron2633 The Americans dominated Amateur Boxing TIL around 1988 we went down til the ground But tell me who the Americans robbed like Roy Jones Jr got done in South Korea and then Riddick Bowe didn’t get a chance in the Gold metal match the ref gave Lewis the fight it’s Boxing it’s hard work letting them fight And the 1984 Olympics who got done like Holyfield ? Tell me..I’ve seen Cubans give decisions to their fighters the Americans won Russia too Bowe I don’t Know if he’d beat Lewis But the referee thought Boxing was non-Contact I guess he Didn’t want anyone to get hit let them fight it’s Boxing for the Gold Metal But it happen in Boxing at all levels it’s a judges opioion and they will be bias..Like a flag in football part of the game but they thought they came up with a good ideal now they have 4 judges with a button in each hand for each fighter and if punch lands and 3 judges push the button at the same time that fighter get a point Watch Floyd Mayweather win the fight and lose becuz of the push the button scoring is terrible and if you have one in each hand for each fighter and they’re throwing a lot of punches that is gonna be hard to score..And I’m sure they get mixed up and you can tell they do that why We don’t care about Amateur Boxing..

I have been looking for some footage from this event for a very long time. My Dad was the timekeeper so he is the one ringing the bell. Thanks so very much for posting, this is all I have of that event. The last time I saw this was when it was on live TV and I just found this today.

Howard Cossell mentioned at the startof this fight that the Cubans do not fight like the Soviets (straight up and down) or the other satellite countries (Bulgaria,East Germany etc.) but that they "move". The only thing separating the Cubans and the Soviets (typically) is "movement". They are VERY MUCH like each other but for the "salsa" style (a type of "rhythm" in my view).

Brandon Green What a pity! Would have loved to see Cuba's best vs U.S best in the pro's ..

Hungarian boxers were also noted for their "movement" and fluid boxing style, similar to the Cubans and Americans.

Yeah it was held in lieu of the 1980 Summer Olympics, which the USA and Cuba among others were boycotting at the time due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (the Olympics were to be held in Moscow that year). There was also a US gymnastics federation tournament the same year for the same reason.

Angel Llanes Ali would have KO'd Teofilo. Stevenson is upright and relatively slow. Similar to Foreman. Depends on power in the right hand but wouldn't overwhelm Ali with it.
