Yes if they win all the remaining matches in 3 or 4 sets (and the teams ahead of them don't win all of their matches - which is most likely to happen because they haven't face some of the tougher opponent yet)

Points calculation in volleyball is easy: if a team wins 3-0 or 3-1 that team gets 3 points and the opponent gets no points; if a team wins 3-2 that team gets 2 points and the opponent gets 1. So, since any teams has still to play 6 matches, USA have still the chance to be in the top eight at the end and play the final eights.

Italy is made by young players but very mature, they do not throw away a single ball in attack, looking for efficiency ,not for the most impressive spike.A rosy future is likely coming,and it s already here.I did not expected this result , i am bit disappointed for the us that i considered a very solid team but who committed banal mistakes.

Im sorry but this match just reminded me of the tokyo olympics. An american team that is seasoned but just getting old. And im not sure if there is just nobody behind them that can step up or the coach is trying to hold on to what he once had but you can just see it. Matt Anderson is one of my all time favorite players and in the Rio Olympics he showed why hes one of the best players in the world. But in tokyo he looked good but didnt look himself and its just showing in this match too. If you give matt Anderson the ball in system its almost always a point but if its out of system it's not going to be a point and its a surprise when it is. When he was in Rio I always wanted him to get set because no mayter how many blockers he could and would always score. Now thats not so much the case and it shows with how close the US is to winning but without getting those out of system points they fall just short. Micah is another player that i think is just not as sharp as he once was and its shows in the little plays and how he just looks like he's following a formula. Max holt does not look as dominant and looks like he's losing some power to his game too and that why I like watching avirll play. What a lot of people dont understand is that ball hitting the ground with power is like a dunk in basketball. Yeh its just a point but it also changes the momentum of the game in your direction. The worst problem I have found with this american team though is that they have no emotion or really any spirit. Yeh you don't want to be too emotional because it can be negative for your game but the positivity just isnt there. I know Erik has a lot but it doesn't seem like the team follows it. They need an energy ball to ignite their game to elevate them to win. They are good enough to win gold but if they play like they did in tokyo or in this match they're cooked and wont even make it out of pool play again and if that's the case sperraw needs to be fired. It's not always the coaches fault but when I watch him coach he has no emotion just look at the rest of the players. It's weird to see other teams and coaches have so much more emotion.

Despite the loss, I would not underestimate USA, they're still a strong team. Italy is in desperate need of an opposite (they should try to play with 3 OHs when Romanò is not playing well...) but at least they have Giannelli as an additional attacker when he is the front row. Love his set for Russo 8:45.

In both the first 2 sets they had a really good lead. Sometimes you can be the better team and just make mistakes you otherwise wouldn't and lose sets that you should not have lost. Then in the third they played with their second team. I truly believe team USA is the favourite for the Olympics

In volley happen, if you see at the end of the game italy has done more unforced errors so I think you are too hard against Usa team.... speaking of Italy Romano by himself has taken 5 blocks in one set and half, probably historical record for one single player in VNL... for me yesterday volley level was not high honestly , both team can do better of this but be quite Usa is surely is a wonderful team , top tier

Saw this in yesterday's game too. I genuinely believe that team USA are potentially the strongest team in the vnl right now, but they have 3 mistakes that are learned in high-school: 1. They are not in good position to cover the court properly 2. They just aren't ready to defend, like it is magically just supposed to happen 3. They aren't playing as smart when face in a difficult spot and just blindly swing with power that leads them to get stuffed by the block

Excellent observations. I know we are only seeing a few selected points in the highlights, but it does seem like the US is too often hitting hard but not smart, leading to a lot of blocks. And I don't understand defensive positioning at the top levels these days. Defenders aren't getting into the hitting lanes and they aren't getting low. They stand where they stand and hope the ball comes to them.

A great example of good positioning is the Japanese team. They seem to have that stuff on lock.
