I worked for the local Oliver dealer in the early 60's. We went to a plowing contest where all participants pulled the same Oliver plow. That put them on the same page. Some of the considerations USAC recorded had no meaning in everyday farm operations, but note worthy anyway. In the contest I attended Oliver out performed all of it's competitors. The most interesting thing about this video was the opening dialog when "Bob" said he wanted us to know what White was up to. To bad Oliver didn't understand that before crawling into bed with the devil. That merger took place because White needed $ and Oliver had them. When White gleaned all they could Oliver ceased to exist.

"Everything was checked, and rechecked..." to make sure the Oliver would win, since White was putting on the show, right?! Kind of strange they chose a 1468 instead of the far more popular 1466. But they both made basically the same power (the 2600 rpm version of the 6-cyl, that is, which began production in late 1972), so I guess it doesn't matter. That DT436 in a 1466 would've started much quicker than the DV550 in the 1468 though.

Cab was the most modern when it came out this year 1973, yeah. But a "full 8 speed powershift"... I guess it was modern, but only 8 speeds! Wouldn't you rather have an 18 speed transmission with 3 speed powershift like the Oliver's Hydraul Shift? How many 30 series tractors had powershift anyway, 10-15%? Quad Range was the all-new transmission Deere debuted in the 30 series, so I'd say it was the most modern.

For the White to beat the Massey, at cold starting, was something. I have a 60s model Massey 65, with the Perkins diesel. It is still the best starting engine, on my property, during any weather, with no starting aid. With a good, strong, battery, almost instant starting, if you leave the throttle lever at idle. Did White use Perkins engines. I will have to check into it. Some of these tests were influenced by the difference in the operators. Gear selection, plowing depth differences, down to fractions of an inch, throttle sets, and certain other skills, such as turning around and lining up the plows for the next pass, if applicable, all can make differences in area covered, per time.

I have an actual report where Oliver was caught cheating at the University of Nebraska tractor test facility. They had said they were bringing two tractors of the same model (one row crop, one standard) but only one showed up the day testing started. Raising suspicion, the test engineer had 3 students observe him make 3 hidden chisel marks in the engine block of the row-crop. That motor came to Nebraska again this time in the standard model. Obviously an engine already broken in should pull a few more hp than a brand new one. The Oliver engineers expressed disappointment in not seeing the gains they were hoping for. Les made the comment that, "Well you didn't expect them to be much different than when we tested the engine before, did you!?"
