I got to fly on the KC-10's a few times and loved the aircraft, but the cables can be a little noisy on them. Throughout my career in the Air Force I got to see the KC-135's, and the C-5's are a giant workhorse which have been flying since the late 1960's and still the best for the Air Force. Even though the best cargo aircraft was the C-141's, I have great praise for the large C-5 Galaxy's and now the C-17's.

I flew on a 141 back in '73 from McGuire AFB in New Jersey to Lajas Field in the Azores and eventually back again. IT was the typical Air Force luxury travel, sitting in the cargo bay facing backward looking at the skids of cargo. I'm thinking 40 watt lights, no fills interior, and no windows to peek out now and then. Five and a half hours each way, good times. Found memories of a Starlifter and the US Air Force.

While I do realize that the C-5s needed to be M'ed, in so doing, the wonderful sound endemic to the earliest C-5s (by way of the TF-39s that originally posted them, ultimately forming the basis of the CF-6 that powers them now) is gone. These must be like museums inside, can tell how old that first one is because of the design of the tailfin. Is there a way to finding out when planes like these are going to be at the airports? I did plenty of plane spotting as a kid, when it wasn’t uncommon to see trijets and older Boeing’s but now it’s a lot different and apart from the odd military or cargo ship one will only ever see the usual planes we all know.
@DanielSander5 жыл бұрын

It's hard to get a good grasp of the relative scale of two different airliner type aircraft unless you see them contrasted next to each other; the features are all so much the same and scaled proportionate to the airframe rather than being of a standard size, so it's hard to tell. The cockpit windows cover the upper nose no matter what, only the windows happen to be much larger on larger aircraft. Only the passenger windows seem to stay roughly the same size, only becoming more profuse as the aircraft grows. Anyway, you don't really realize how damn big a KC-10 is until you see one contrasted with a smaller plane on the same runway. They are big old bastards, really. Not a 747, but no Cessna either. Still can't get used to the KC-135 with those big bulgy engines either; can't decide if it ruins the looks or just totally changes them. BTW, it's "KC-135", "KC-10" and "C-5M". That's how the USAF designated them. People leaving hyphens out is one of my pet peeves; a "C5M" sounds like a WWII-era Japanese reconnaissance plane built by Nakajima. Did I miss something and they started charging extra per every character you type, or what? How much time could you possibly have saved by not bothering to push the "-" key three times?
@TheSirjohn20126 жыл бұрын
