I was a prop mechanic on the E-models 71-74. When I was stationed in Thailand flights on our 130’s were the only place we had air conditioning. As you prepared to taxi the entire cargo area would fog up. The air conditioning and the 54H60’s put me to sleep in less than a minute. We would occasionally go up to check the synchronization of the props. We stationed ourselves on the flight deck and some of those pilots were Batcrap crazy. It was a whole different experience to actually be able to see where you were going.The pilots knew we loved it when they were doing the wild maneuvers. I miss those days.

Has always been one of my top 5 planes of all time; an Extremely versatile machine. Not the biggest, or the fastest, or the toughest plane in the world, but many variants of this very machine have been used for decade, and it does its job very well, whatever the role. Great video.

@Jesus H Christ Yes. Many to choose from. Those were heavily used in their time. The P-51 Mustang, B-17, B-24, B-29, as well as the Mosquito all played a heavy part in ww2 with outstanding success. Other highly successful aircraft in later wars were the B-52, F-86 Sabre, F-14, F-16, F-18, etc etc.

Mike in 1962 at a RAF Alconbury airshow there was a C130 that took off across the 150 foot runway. The nose gear started on the edge of the runway. By the time the mains cleared the opposite edge the aircraft was airborne. The aircraft flew direct RAF Wyton about 10 miles away. I am sure he had to be empty and quite light on fuel.

My first flight in a C-130 as a pax was in 1968, the day I arrived in Vietnam. Later on the day of my arrival, I caught a flight from Cam Ranh Bay Airbase to the 43rd Signal Battalion HHD at Tropo Hill, near the Pleiku Airbase. It was a nice smooth flight until we made a quick tactical approach flight drop on our arrival in Pleiku, up near the Cambodian border (30 miles away). I was an aircraft repair parts supply sergeant for the US Army.

The hotel I stay at in Biloxi is right in line with the runway at Keesler AFB. From what I can tell they take off toward the water and land from the water I guess not to make so much noise over houses. Feels so weird to see them come in low and slow above you as they seem like they can fall out of the air at any second.

The very first airplane ride I ever had was a KY ANG C-130H back in ‘89 when I was 18 and in college (AFROTC). I went on to serve in the USAF for 20 years and flew the F-16. The Herc will always have a special place in my heart! Great vid!

Was stationed at Altus AFB as a young airmen. The C130 is a marvel of human engineering. ATC call them "heavies". The fact that something that big can defy gravity is something to behold.

A good old 37th TAS or whatever the USAF is now calling their Tactical Airlift Squadrons. Dad was the Blue Tail Flies First Sergeant from 1981-4 when they were flying Vietnam era E models out of Rhein Main AB. SOOOOOOO many memories, both good and bad from those 3 years... Go HERC's and keep on being the best Tac Airlift Squadron in the world 37th!!!

I did my National Service in the SADF in 87/89 and the first time I flew in a C130 or Flossie as we called it, was from WaterKloof AFB, Pretoria to Ondangwa AFB on the Border ie in Namibia. It was was like no other flight I've ever experienced, noisy, canvas seats length wise down the plane, wires exposed.About a 2.5 hour flight. A few minutes into the flight one of the flight crew came along with a torch and shone his light up into the fuselage about where the wing would join.I think he did it on the otherside also.I hate flying and when I saw this going on my heart nearly stopped but no-one else took any notice. I never found out why this was done and I'm sure it was done on other flights.I would appreciate a possible explanation from anyone who might read this. The spiral takeoffs and landings at Ondagwa AFB also caused some white knuckles. For all its discomfort I certainly preferred the Flossie to the SAFAIR 707 which looked fcuking dodgy.

The last aircraft I worked on was the C-130's at Little Rock AFB, Arkansas and that was after working on the C-141 Starlifters at Norton, AFB, California. The Hercules as nice, but the Starlifters was the best aircrafts I had the chance to work on and fly on while on duty.

One of my favorite airplane's!!!! Airbus tried to copy it with the A400 hahahaha!!! Ironic they used a C-130 as a test bed for they're engines before they even built the prototype! One of the top 5 best aircraft ever built!!!! And it's still in production over 50yrs later! Love that Herky Bird!!!!

If you had to get there and back this was the plane. As an air traffic controller in 67, I talked one down. He had 13 men strapped to the tail gate that was open and shot full of holes. "Lamp Lighter." No problem.

Try loading these things with thousands of small bombs, even old mortar rounds, and see what effect they would have over a mock battlefield. Imagine if each could drop one thousand mini-bombs on top of enemy positions (especially if they were guided). And if under the wings they could carry other bombs or targeting devices, so much the better. Our dedicated bomber force is incredibly small in numbers, and in the advent of a first strike by our adversaries, could well be put out of action. We will need other aircraft to perform bombing missions.

A big part of this aircrafts mission is to land on unpaved runways such as dirt strips and prop engines are less prone to injecting FOD in these types of environment.
