This isnt true. If you look at the 10 meter splits Usain was running faster the whole way during his 9.58. This would have likely been a 9.62 if he didnt slow down

When I look back at Bolt’s achievements I have to come to the conclusion that he wasn’t even human. He consistently ran against the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fastest men in history and made them look like ordinary 9-5 workers trying their hands at sprinting. It’s just shocking, he really was cut from a different cloth.

This man somehow has the power to blow any patriotic feelings I have for my own country out of the window. The roar of that crowd says I am not alone. I just hope that he has inspired his successor out there in the world somewhere to take up athletics because I don't know what the sport is going to do without him.

@@trentalexander-maguire7813 He would have probably ran a 9.60 or something like that. The performance was better because the wind was way worse. His reaction time here was actually worse, but the start was still faster. He lost a bit of time in the middle section, however. His splits say that he was about as fast as his 9.58 WR considering he started to celebrate around 80m (his motion seems to start a few meters before that).

I've watched this race and his 2009 awesome 9.58 masterclass countless times, and I've come to the conclusion that, at least over 100m, Bolt could have equalled - if not bettered his 2009 time here. He is in the zone and running so effortlessly. In Berlin, when he ran 9.58, he was NOT totally maxed out, so he probably could have bettered that time then. However, when I watch the Beijing race, Bolt actually puts the brakes on! If he had put the hammer down completely in that race, I believe he could have run 9.49. Anyone agree?

Who's still watching this in 2022 and realised that Bolt ran 200m in that relay and even finish in front of some of the anchor leg runners.

It feels surreal to see this today when the past two olympics have been close races, very different times when Bolt was in his prime and absolutely nobody had a chance at any gold

If you watch closely, Bolt didn't celebrate after winning the 200m; but he celebrated after breaking the world record, meaning, he already knew he would win the race. All he wanted to do was break the world record. And this is how legends think!!

I think he pulled up early on the 100m to celebrate just so that we'd wonder how much better he could do. Definitely some showmanship there.

Breaking world records is never easy in track and field but doing so at the Olympics or the World Championships is even harder due to the number of qualifying rounds one has to run before the final. In 2009, Bolt ran 8 races in 6 days in his 3 events. Thus, making his achievements even more memorable and legendary.

A lot of people seem to think that it he went flat out til the end he would have had bettered the current WR of 9.58 but at best he would have ran 9.63 still unbelievable to have had the race won at 70 meters and be able to slow down the last 20. Never again will an Olympic 100m final be won so easily

If I remember, before this race someone told him to break the 200m world record. Bolt then said "I'll try my hardest". So the entire time he was running for the 200m he was only chasing the world record!!!

Ganan Wimalarajan That's just factually wrong. if one person is genetically more athletic, or otherwise has traits that help them excel at a sport they can put in less work and still be better.

I still wonder if Bolt could've run the 2008 100m in less than his eventual record of 9.58 if he had not started celebrating with about 20m to go.

He definitely could. But it would have been fractional, maybe 9.45-9.50. His start was average too, which doesn't get mentioned, he could have made a tenth there. But he was already running times, that I believe was practically beyond human capacity. Which is why he was clearing everyone. He could have set a record to last a lifetime though, whereas 9.58, we might see that beaten one day.

There is no denying that Usain Bolt is the greatest of all time. I have made the outlandish statement many times in the past that I believe Bolt was capable of clocking 9.0. I have watched many of his races, and I have always felt that he ran knowing that he would win, and therefore always held himself in reserve. Sometimes slow at the start, tailing off at the end. If you watch him in the 200, he maintains his pace and excellerates, way beyond the 100m distance, it would be interesting to see a cut out of the best 100m stretch from a 200m event.
