If my understanding is correct at around 2:00 does the connector have one side that is sata and the other ide? I have an old computer (around 15 years that has two drives). The drives had been connected via ribbons so would this mean they are ide drives? Apologies for the lack of knowledge but I've never removed anything from a pc or laptop. I would like to transfer the data from the drives onto a computer. Thanks for posting. Would appreciate if you could let me know the best adapter to get.

I'm not sure your Desktop 3.5" hard drive is IDE or SATA. If you remove your desktop PC's hard drive cable. there is a many pins watch from 0:28 . then it is IDE 3.5" hard drive. 2.5 is 5v and 3.5 is 12 v you connect the 2.5 5v to 12v . yellow wire is 12 v.

Yes. you are right. the red wire is 5v, the yellow wire is 12v for the SATA power connector. But the 2.5" laptop hard drive used 5v only. SO don't worry about the 12v. because the 2.5" laptop hard drive's circuit no going to use the 12v.
