This microscope is a gateway drug. I bought one a few years ago. That led to buying my first compound microscope. Now I'm on yet another better quality compound scope. Who knows where this will lead. Be aware: If you don't already own a microscope, a USB scope is only the beginning.

Thank for the videos sir. I bought an edu science scope at a second hand store about 3 years back. Unpacked it a month or two back and got frustrated because of some of the stuff you described in your newbie mistakes video (or the 10 things you wish you would have known). Getting gifted a USB scope, not the same model you are showing here (but actually saw the one in the video on Amazon when I was looking at the one I am being given). You've given me the basics I needed to get past the frustration and into the fun nerdy science stuff. With the weather getting nicer here you've also got me wondering where my telescopes went too (cheap ones I got second hand when I should save up for a small reflector). Always need to say thank you to the folks who take the time to share their expertise. Because of social media and KZbin there are craftspeople and hobbyists that pass on their skills like an old master craftsmen would take on apprentices to carry on the skills and techniques. You guys and teachers make the world a better place. EDIT (2024): With 2 years of experience under my belt. You do get what you pay for, that goes from microscopes to cars to washing machines to boots. Going back and both between my "coin microscope" (Cheap-O band USB "stereoscopic") and an OMax compound there is the camera resolution for the pictures which is a pain in the butt for doing art work. It is nice to have the option to switch back and forth between seeing cells in a thin sliver of apple skin and the texture of a apple flesh by using the two kind of devices. Having a cheap USB (under $50) instead of a $400+ stereo microscope can make the lower resolution worth while in some cases.

For electronic rework/soldering, you only need 10x-40x magnification... are there any USB based microscopes, true 4k/optical-zoom that you'd recommend? For example, one that can output video 1) wirelessly to a android/monitor receiver (Miracast/Wireless-HDMI) 2) Wired USB to latptop/tablet device 3) Wired HDMI Dual-lens for seeing depth.. and a large Field-of-View would also be nice. Unfortunately, the ones I've seen are very expensive, presumably because they have way too much zoom (130x-180x lens), or come with their own 10" display, or gimic features like remote-control, etc.

I have to disagree with you a bit about this microscope. I bought one. Mine cost $12.50, so it's gone up a little. I do not think this is a good choice for a child. It will lead to frustration. Focusing is very touchy, and the stand is very flimsy. It tips over easily. I attached mine to a large magnet. The joints on the stand cannot be tightened enough to give firm support. The clamp and the screw on mine are chrome plated plastic. Only the base is metal. I think a young child would do much better with a simple magnifying glass. You can get these with an attached base that serves as a spacer, and they are super easy to use. I suspect that any child old enough to master this device could also use a real microscope.

I too bought this one from Amazon and returned as the zoom was less than the claim of 1500x. Any idea what the max zoom is actually, on this one? I thought it was around 50x to 100x. Also, there was only zoom-in/zoom-out knob and the view was in focus only if it was zoomed-in completely or zoomed-out completely. For any zoom level in between, it was always out of focus. Is there a way to focus it for all zoom levels?

The USB microscope in the video has a small sensor. You would also have to make it fit into the microscope somehow, so it is better to get a camera that fits into the eyepieces, also because of the difference in focus.
