USC Class of 2024 valedictorian's speech canceled amid allegations of antisemitism

The University of Southern California has canceled its Class of 2024 valedictorian's speech due to safety issues after pro-Israel groups accused her of being antisemitic.
Asna Tabassum was scheduled to speak at the commencement but has since been told that USC will not allow her to do so due to safety concerns. Provost Andrew Guzman released a statement revoking Tabassum’s ability to speak as valedictorian at her graduation ceremony.
“The intensity of feelings, fueled by both social media and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, has grown to include many voices outside of USC and has escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement. We cannot ignore the fact that similar risks have led to harassment and even violence at other campuses,” Guzman said.

Granted tha such speeches are not exactly a form of debate, they are more like a one-way flow of opinions. That is why the common thing to do is to stick to positive thoughts expressed with inspirational phrases, not to debate difficult issues where opinions are divided. It takes a very good speaker to use a difficult topic and come up with a speech that is both deep and balanced, that is welcome by both sides of a given issue. I have heard some good ones, but, in general, am not a big fan. We do not know what she wanted to tell us, although I believe they are submitted in advance, so probably someone knew. So, valedictorian addresses aside, I do not think the role of the university should be to suppress debate on hot issues, because 'it is not safe.' We are not any safer when we do not talk thing out.

@@DerrickW30 I am real. In situations like this there would always be extremists groups on all sides, and there are usually many sides. Things tend to get over-simplified and trivialized by polarizing it to just two sides. Which is why we need more debate, not less. To give simple examples, during WW2 it would have been reasonable not to like neither Hitler nor Stalin. However, for many people caught in between the two, if you criticized one you would have been accused of supporting the other. To bring things closer to home, in the upcoming election, it is easy to see many people who regard both candidates as unacceptable. So no, I do not agree that the fact that someone considers a group that stands on one side as extremist immediately implies that there should be no debate and we should all stand with the other side. Do that and you may soon find out that you have been siding with other extremists that may be no better than the first. We need debate to find our own side. I do agree that a valedictorian speech is not the right venue for such difficult topics. But if we think this topic is too divisive for the intention of a valedictorian speech, then it should probably be kept out from both sides. In my opinion, the decision to accept this topic, or any other hot, difficult, divisive topic, as one of the issues addressed in a valedictorian speech should not be based on what side the speaker takes. It should be based on the speaker's ability to talk for both sides. If a topic is so divisive as to make that impossible, then it belongs in some other medium, one that allows debate.
