If you want to check it out, the video is called "Shotguns don't suck for Home Defense". With the setup in this particular video my guess would be full penetration through 4 walls but stopped on the 5th.

One of the big questions is what will it do to a target after going through a wall. A better test would have been to have ballistic gel behind a wall or two. In tests I've seen before, shotguns and handguns tend to just pierce right through. Rifles lose enough velocity that the hydrostatic wound channel is significantly reduced.

Really good video. I'd love to see this expanded on. I think the takeaway is pretty much that anything worth using for self defense does not care about your walls, but I'd still be interested in seeing what a 45acp hollow point and other slower rounds would do. A very expensive test could be getting one of those human torso equivalent things made of ballistic gel with organ bags and seeing what happens after a good hit on an intruder.
@JaronActual3 жыл бұрын
It seems counterintuitive, but slower, heavier rounds tend to penetrate more when dealing with barriers like drywall and liquids. That's because more mass means more inertia, meaning it's harder to change that object's current motion. you'd see the same thing if you were shooting 115, 124, and 147gr 9mm.
@E1337N3SS3 жыл бұрын

@@E1337N3SS If you can find it, watch the episode of Mythbusters where they fired bullets into a swimming pool to see how far they stay lethal. The pistol rounds stayed at lethal velocity almost 10 feet deep while high-powered rifle rounds only made it a few feet at most. The faster rounds experience a harder shock hitting the water since they face a more rapid deceleration. Often the bullets simply fragmented upon impact.
@momoniji64392 жыл бұрын

I came to the same conclusion after watching this. You can change vinyl siding into wood, manufactured wood siding, composite or hardie board. I find these types of videos very interesting. When the walls a a few feet apart or less, 5.56 zings through entire houses worth of drywall. When wall are spaces out like they would be in a real house, 5.56 (assuming we’re using home defense ammo and not fmj) will stop after 2-3 walls. There is a video, or atleast there was, where the guys spaced the walls correctly, and made exterior walls of different materials. Nothing made it through brick, stone, cmu, and i think hardy plank. In short, yes, spacing the walls out correctly seems to actually matter. Most free standing homes will stop a bullet from coming in, or going out, minus windows obviously.

The tube holds 7 shells and I keep the chamber empty. The first 3 shells are #7, the next 2 are 00 buck and the last 2 rifled slugs. I have a shell sleeve on the stock that has the same distribution. Hopefully I'll never have to even put my finger on the trigger. The shell escalation sequence is in case things really go sideways. When I practice, I make sure I know exactly what's in the chamber of whatever tool I'm using and exaclty how many of what type I have left. By the way, it's a good to practice knowing exactly what is left in your mags when training for tactical reloads. Few things are worse during a fight than swapping mags and trading one that's half full for one that's almost dry.

You may already know this,but this caused me a big problem once and I always pass this tip along to fellow HD shotgunners... Check the shells in your tube, rotate them and completely reload atleast every few months (check them and rotate, replace as needed). I used to keep my mag tube completely loaded, chamber empty. I still do kind of, just differently and I check the shells more. I wanted to empty my mag tube that had been loaded for about a year. When I popped the first shell out, it was slightly deformed on the tip. The second shell was also. The 3rd shell was deformed to the point of OPENING and spilling buffer inside my tube. The rest of the shells were also deformed or open! I now keep my mag tube half loaded and I check the shells once a month. They are generally fine, though I have had a few deformed slightly after a while. Id hate to grab my shotgun in a real defense situation only to have the first shell become stuck from deformation. The buffer and shot will also make your gun not function if they get into the action. Its a simple thing to check those shells, but I KNOW lots of people just load up and think everything is fine. I can assure you a full magazine tube over time will deform and eventually open your shells, rendering them and the gun useless. Just a tip, I'm no expert lol. But I have had this happen to me and it was a scary thought if I had NEEDED the gun at that moment. I wish more people mentioned this in videos and training, but I just pass it along where I can. @bonezcustoms on Instagram

@@theanxious Thanks for the tip! I refresh all of my mags and tubes every other month or so. I also keep all of my mags and tubes loaded with one round less than capacity. It will resonate with tactical sport shooters who've had a full AR-15 mag fall out after doing a tactical reload. It's one thing if it happens in a range stall. It's especially embarrassing during a competition when everyone is watching.

Same conclusion I gathered about 40 years ago and I was teaching the same thing about home defense. And a pistol the hollow based WOD cutter turned around backwards doing about 600 ft per second is more than adequate and will not penetrate through walls. Bird shot is exceedingly effective inside of a house and still does not penetrate through walls nearly as much as the defense ammo does. Not only that the hollow base one cutter turned around backwards shooting about 600 ft per second is really soft on elderly hands when they have to operate the revolver.

@@Saanonymous80 It's difficult to do in a preexisting home. Ideally it has to be done when a home is being built. If it's going to be FEMA storm shelter rated, it is recommended that a structural engineer designs it. Even prefabricated metal safe rooms require to be installed on ground level in a particular grade of concrete foundation for drilling and anchoring purposes. These also are easier to install in new construction.

I always thought the same until I stumbled upon a video where an active shooter walked into what look like a school library with a shotgun shoots a woman from under 10 ft away. The woman stumbles in shock regains her balance and swiftly walks the other way off camera. I do not know what gauge of shotgun nor round shot size was used but the woman was wearing light summer clothing. Now take into account she was a plus size woman with a busty chest. My understanding is she almost died in the hospital but didn’t. Moral of the story is she was shot at point blank and she didn’t go down. Be careful with birdshot I recommend buying some meat and doing your own personal penetration tests. I personally use four buck in my home defense.

My home defense rounds are 20g #4 bird shot for the shotgun, I don't care what people think about bird shot because in the close quarters of home defense it's deadly and not one person is willing to take a hit to prove that false. My ar I use 62g speer bonded soft points, they expand instantly upon impact in soft tissue or hard surfaces. Pistol round is 124g jhp. I also live in a mobile home with 1/4 dry wall and crap wood studs and outside walls aren't even a barrier for my 22 pellet gun. I also only have one neighbor to worry about and that's over 100 feet away and in the least likely direction I would be shooting. Bigger concern is knowing where my family is within line of fire so I committed to memory where they are and if they will be laying down or sitting up depending on time of day. Family knows to hit the floor if they hear someone breaking in or me issuing commands to a bad guy so I have more room for error. Another thing I have done is stage furniture in such a way that if a stranger bursts through the doors they will be slowed down buying me more time since the teenage boys are at the opposite end of the house from me at night unless I'm in the office then she who must be obeyed is opposite me. Come in the back door and I've got a clear line of fire from wherever I am and it's a narrow dark hall working to my benefit. Home defense is a planned out situation, you have to know all safe shooting angles and locations of family members at any given time. For me that's rather easy and very predictable.

The Box Of Truth did this same test, but they had their walls set 10' apart. The 5.56 was flying wildly off target by the last round, a segmented 5.56 round did break apart, but all segments went through 4 walls 10' apart. With the 10' distance #8 birdshot penetrated the first wall, but did very little damage to the 2nd wall.
