This Manggarai folksong from Flores, Indonesia, is related to the 19th century slave drama in the region. As the slaves were being deported, the song was performed to show support and to bring hope.
The introduction of the song captures the atmosphere of the savannah in the peaceful Manggarai region before it was enslaved by Portugal.

Ken Steven thank you for yet another brilliant composition! I was priveleged to hear Fajar dan Senja II in 2017 and Cikala Le Pong Pong sung by the Stellenberg Girls Choir in 2018 and I remember being absolutely in love with the pieces. To now have sung Benggong with this choir in 2019 was even more incredible. 🙏🏻

Thanks a lot Ken for your amazing work. As a native Manggarai watching this video brings back a lot of memories and proud at the same time. The pronounciation is perfect, improvisation is superb. This song came from distant past of Manggarai tribe even the old generation did not really understand the full meaning of the song let alone the new generation but we all still love this song. I am one of the sons of Manggarai, (NTT). I love manggarai, I love the culture of the manggarai area, and everything in manggarai, one of which is the Manggarai folk song. I am very grateful because one of our regional songs has gone global. the benggong song is just one of the many folk songs in manggarai. hearing the benggong song sung by Europeans, which was arranged very well, we felt we were also in Europe. once again... thank you.... you are amazing!!!! I love that choir very much. But there are other choirs like this... and not everyone is on KZbin... Anyway I don't think comparison is possible - or helpful- in art/ music. "This choir is the best, that singer sings better than that, this orchestra plays better than all others." For what is this comparison good? It denounces the other musicians which put the same effort and love in their music and practising. Everything in Art is a thing of own taste, not a thing of better or worse in my opinion.

Honestly, i used to sing this song when i was in elementary school 10 ten years ago. At that time i didn't really understand by it meaning (especially in the reffrain #rasung wa, rasung wa, toe ita ende go, ema go, betong benggong banggong, CMMIW) ,however i sang it still because the tune too stunning and bring a peace,but it never cross in my mind that, this song will sang by you guys. Absolutely Gorgeus performance..thx u btw, u guys remind me,my fantastic childhood with this song :-):-)
