I am Morris grand daughter, Rachel Venezia. It’s so touching to read all of the comments on here and how my Papou touched your hearts. Thank you so much for all your kind words. For those commenting on the interviewers “cold response”, I can see how you’d feel that way, not seeing her at all through the interview. I know Carol personally and can attest that being cold was not the case at all. This interview took months to prepare even with practice interviews to get through telling his entire story. This is the first time he ever told anyone, including anyone in our family. What you can’t see is her pain on the other side holding it together for him. You can hear her crying several times. She comes from parents who are both Holocaust survivors and she knows the pain far too intimately. This was one of the most difficult interviews she’d ever come across out of the thousands she has done. They had so much to get through and a very small window of time to do it in. Even then they still didn’t get through all of it which why it feels rushed at the end. And that’s even sadder. I’m grateful for the phenomenal interview Carol gave, the courage for her to even start this kind of project so no one would ever forget these testimonies and her loving trust that set him free to tell his story over 50 years later for the first time. It is my family’s greatest treasure and I am truly humbled by both of their bravery. Thank you to everyone who listens. Be the light.

I was fortunate enough to have known Maurice. Both my father and I have spent time with Maurice, his wife, and his cousin, Dario Gabbai, who was also a member of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando. I have sat on this very sofa upon which Maurice is sitting in this interview, and heard his personal stories of Auschwitz....there is nothing more profound on this planet. I miss them both, dearly. We lost Dario this year, and Maurice in 2013. I was never fortunate enough to meet Maurice's brother, Shlomo. I will always treasure the memories I have of them, they hold a very special place in my heart.

What is the name of the book and is it in English, or in Greek? I would like to read it. He was a friend of my parents, I never could believe that he had experienced all this and I have never heard any of it until I saw this video. I never even knew he was in a concentration camp. My mother and grandmother were up in the mountains with the partisans in northern Greece. My mother never talked about it, my grandmother never talked about it. After my grandmother died, I got to know some of her friends who were also up there with the communists and the partisanos, and I couldn’t believe what they told me. But it has given me such a determination, nothing is an obstacle compared with what they went through.

@@mattpaola65 This format isn’t designed for that kind of interview. This is an academic type interview where they try to avoid “influencing” the person being interviewed. If they interviewer gets too “involved” it can consciously or unconsciously influence or “steer” their testimony. I like this style because it’s all about the survivor and not some network trying to produce a particular narrative or soundbite for a show.

Thessaloniki is better known to us English speakers as Salonika. It was indeed a thriving city and port, with a large Jewish community, representing almost 40% of the city's population. God bless this poor people. It's almost a cruel thing to ask them to go back in memory. a normal happy life became a hell on Earth. How can people that survived the Holocaust not be affected the remainder of their life from abuse, torture, sickness, cold , hunger, forced labor, forced to live in filth, and the destruction of their families, with fair and not knowing from one minute to the other if they're going to be next. Which probably would have been a welcome solution. How can it not be affected all the remaining days of their life? God bless their hearts. May they have comfort and peace in this life and in the Life to Come.

Yes, my mother wanted to name my sister Esther, Dudu, after her grandmother Dudu. We were six years old when she was born and we told our mother, as well as all her American friends told her don’t do it. It means something else in English so they settled on Daisy, instead so she is Esther Daisy I am not joking, but almost every Greek Jewish family Has a daughter named Esterina, right? My father’s sister also had that name, but since she married a Greek, her name was changed to Stella Economo .

I asked Carol and she said he was referring to the prayer of the dead. I think since his native language is Ladino, that’s what they call it. In Hebrew it’s the Kaddish.

The questions. Certainly most were vital and critical; but the interruptions, I feel, weren't always timely and often interrupted this kind man's train of thought. Sometimes, to get back to the story, he would still be answering the interviewer's questions that really weren't going back to the original story. Hope that makes sense.
