There’s a simpler way to achieve similar results. You can use a dry erase marker to mark a key and then use a piece of scotch tape to “lift” the print off and transfer it to a plastic soda bottle. Then just cut it out and use the same way. This eliminates the need for the soap and the printer so it can be a little more discreet depending on the situation.

Modeling clay or silly putty inside that altoids tin is generally going to be far less suspicious-looking (and yield a more detailed/higher fidelity impression). You can then close the tin to protect the impression until you can transpose it/measure the pin lengths/etc. I also recommend cutting the key by buying a matching blank and filing it to the pin lengths. It'll be much more durable, you can bring it to any hardware store afterwards and get them to make as many copies as desired without raising any suspicion, and you won't need a tension wrench. It will also look far less suspicious if found on you, which grants you social access/credibility as well.

Going to a hardware store to make copies will put you on their CCTV. I thought the point was to stay low key? I know, I had to. 😂

@@Dominasty Read again. They need to positively identify you as a suspect *and* correlate cut lengths of the key *and* know which hardware store you went to and have a general idea of when. Assuming this hardware store has CCTV coverage of the keycutter (mom and pop's tend to not). You aren't telling me how they're doing the very first step, identifying you as a suspect. You're more likely to be on CCTV for the entry *itself*, and hiding your face will raise caution of those around you sky-high.
@DominastyАй бұрын
@@brentsaner You're extremely naive. They use the shotgun method, casting a wide net, and matching CCTV to timing and suspects. Then the interviews and narrowing starts. Go ahead, though, keep believing it's a great idea to put yourself on CCTV, in a hardware store, to make copies of keys you're trying to use to commit felonies. I mean, come one, man...this is this is the stuff detectives laugh about when stupid criminals do stupid things. Smart enough to know to make copies of keys but dumb enough to put yourself on camera and/or get receipts on digital transactions (credit/debit/mobile pay). Talk about non-repudiation and destroying any case you possibly thought you could have. This isn't about picking a lock with a bar of soap per say (just make an outline on the tin with a marker and forget the soap). It's about how criminals hock a set of keys or a key to make a knock off. Otherwise, we can just go to a CVS, Walgreens or a hardware store with the key you hiked and get a key made. Duh.

I'm tempted to try this with just paper, in layers, or cardstock. Then hardening with krazy glue to keep the points from bending and turning with a tension wrench. Maybe two layers of cardstock with phenolic glue between them and crazy glue to harden it all. Thanks man, I would never have thought of using a copier, bravo!

after cleaning the excess soap we also want to remove any traces of the soap scent. using a knife blade to remove the soap in the grooves may leave a scratch mark on the key which may be noticed

I understand the point.. and this is good info. I just have some questions. If home depot can barely get me a working copy of a key with a machine designed to cut real keys the copy of which I have with me.. if that still ends up being rough at best. How's a home made one made from a can gonna go? 2.. why not just make a proper jiggler? Basically a rake tool minus needing a tension wrench. Then you have a "key" for multiple locks. Jiggling is very easy on most cheaper locks with just a little practice. You'll basically have to jiggle with that key to make it work properly anyway as it will be very rough. Besides the avg guy isn't opening anything beyond cheap outside door locks and interior anyway. Which most of those can be gottwn in with a thin card. Tigher tolerance locks with security pins and such can be defeated with that key.. but you would literally have to make it perfect. That means tools, and a harder key material. At that point. It can be done.. I'm just saying.

Window putty might work better. Or even plaster of paris. Problem w soap, as we saw, is that some of the imprint sticks on the key, thus making the "picture" on the soap incomplete.

Quick! Find me soap, an altoids tin, fire up the scanner, and my micro snips! Can't imagine an emergency where this would be the call to action. But I'm sure I'll be surprised. Also, cameras have adjustable aspect ratios, keys are standardized, and phones connect to printers easily. But yeah, grab the soap it's an emergency haha.

There's a kit on the market that's just a small hinged box filled with two flat pieces of clay covered in talc, you squish them around the key and fill the void with the included low melt temp metal, in included spoon with cig lighter. A bit overdone maybe, but you don't have to wait until you get home to make and use the "key".

Thanks. It's so easy to break in... That's both amazing and worrying... Where I live, if they don't break in (actually damaging the door or the lock), the insurance won't pay anything : they'll only assume you forgot to lock the door... I guess we all need to avoid locks having keys so easy to copy.

I made a car key from a zip tie once. It worked well but you needed to use a lever to turn the lock as plastic wasn’t rigid enough to do that part. I also taught myself how to Hotwire a car…took only a few minutes. 😂

I saw this on Prison Break, but you can use the soap to copy the key's shape and then pour some melted plastic to create a plastic key that works as well.
@Jamespennington712 ай бұрын
One way I’ve used, is to make the impression of the key in clay. A wad of clay in an Altoids tin works pretty well and is discreet. You can get the entire key impression of about three keys in one mold. Also, spray a little silicone on top of the clay before hand so nothing sticks to the key and it comes out with a smooth crisp impression. Bake the clay in an oven. Once your new “mold” has cooled, melt some solder in the impression of the key. Let it cool. It won’t be strong enough to turn the barrel of the lock but it will be rigid enough to get the tumblers where you want them, then use a small screwdriver or a leverage bar.

lol me and a friend used a method similar to break into his parents room to steal there weed and cigarettes.... we printed a picture of a lock pick, cut it out and glued it to a piece of sheet metal and grinded away until we got the shape. worked great until it didnt and it broke off in the key hole after using it a few times, then we went back to the garage and made an extractor and was able to get it out

Wow, all you need (along with the soap) is access to a working key and a photocopier. What a great hack! 😊 Wouldn't silly putty be a better medium than soap for the mold step of this?

Good field expedient. This technique came from OSS and SOE techniques in WW2 [and probably earlier, but the first I know of is WW2]. OR you can buy a Multipic Quick-Key Easy Pro kit to do the same thing. Not cheap, about $200 in Australia.

Definitely not a bad idea for a field expedient key, but if you're a bit more prepared, wouldn't it be easier to met some gallium or similar low melting point metal and simply use the soap impression as a mold?
