Rail system is great because you can add on for longer lengths easier to level out also. Worth the purchase to nullify the ladder headache.

Nice video. I bought my first chainsaw mill in 1975. Built two cabins with it. Moved on to the Wood Mizer and finally the Lucas Mill. Just bought a slab er for a chainsaw so I’m kinda going full circle. Some logs in backyard jobs just shouldn’t be firewood. I enjoy your videos, Arborist Blair Glenn

Man that’s amazing. Could you show those cabins on your channel? That would be really neat. I appreciate your channel btw, sir. I’m an aspiring arborists who works at a power plant which is supposed to close down soon so I am trying to get educated on KZbin AMAP.

Those setups are about the slowest way to mill a log. The main benefit is that the mill can be carried into a backyard or steep hill, then slabs can be packed out. There are many times a valuable log is available in an area most equipment won't reach.

How thick are your slabs? How long do you air dry these? Some live edge slabs would be nice. Thanks for the video

Its risky clamping on the nose sprocket bearing, you should clamp behind it or there are better ways if you want to maximize the use of bar length.

How else do you have in mind besides just using a bigger saw/bar combo ?

Why does everyone sleep on echo saws? Always husq or stihl.

Pretty cool setup. Do you change the cutter angle to something like 10* for your ripping chain? I've seen others who do that and wondered what your thoughts are on it.

I don’t. You could and there are other little tweaks you can do to improve the finish quality but I just use my normal sharpening job and it comes out rough but quick.

I make my own ripping chain out of semi chisel cross cut chain. 10 degree comp chain for a smooth finish and 15 degree full skip chain for making lumber that I don't care if it's rough.

Years of watching KZbin videos and researching on the web will get a person smart enough about Alaska style milling and what works and sorta works and what doesn't work. I've been thinking about making some milling videos to pass along the knowledge I've learned so far.

Have you ever used the winch with your mill? Wonder if they are worth it or not? They look great on you tube.

I’ve not, but I’ve heard they can make a huge difference if you’re doing much milling. I only ever do it very occasionally

Is a specialty milling chain essential for making slabs or do you just run a standard chain?

Yes semi chisel chain is used.

You can buy ripping chains that are better. 15* - 0* tooth angle with skip to clear the noodles. Need bar IV bag or can to lubricate the big side cutting bar/chain.

I've had mine for a few years but I don't have a big saw so I'm kinda limited. I have a rancher 450 with a 20" bar. That gives me 14" max width. I have thought about trying a ripping chain because it takes me FOREVER to rip a slab. I was cutting a 14" slab 16'long and it to 40 minutes per cut. That's a whole tank of gas per cut. It's torture.

You see why bandsaws are popular eh! 😄 if you are pulling from a distance it is much better. And keep the saw sharp, logs clean, that does sound painfully slow, it can lose its appeal after a couple slabs 😆.
