I'm glad you've posted this because i've been looking at the Rutlands ER20 collet. But it doesn't come with a spanner to suit the castle top. This one looks great. Cheers

Hi, It is called 'seven to six' because it is a 7mm collet, that is capable of tightening down to 6mm. If you have a 6mm shank, you would choose a six to five collet for best fit. For 1/4" (6.35mm) you need a seven to six. I can understand some being worried about extending the cutter so far- but it is a lot safer than not gripping sufficient length of the cutter shank. Quality ones tend to have a minimum grip line- I believe that is the mark on your extender.

Hi Mike. Thanks for clearing up the 7 to 6👍 Yes the line is the “grip” line Regards JP

@@Smallbarnworkshop Yes, but they are minimum lines- it is permitted to grip more. Many people just drop the cutter in and tighten- but as has been pointed out by others, gripping pulls the bit in, and if it is bottomed it cannot move- this can mar the gripping surface. A tip is to put a small piece of flexible material- a short length of a wide rubber band is ideal- in the bottom of the collet holder. This stays there, and stops it being a problem.

I'm always fearful of using a router bit extender. Adding to the height of the bit increases the momentum at the furthest point of the bit, from the router. I've seen/heard about nasty accidents from router bits being used with extenders 🤔 Though I would love to use one with my router 😅

Hi. Michael. mostly mine is just adding an extra 10- 20mm so the collet is just above the table. I have not had reason to use it at the full height yet. it does look at bit scary at 4 inch above the table. I will be keen to hear if others views. Regards JP

With an extender you increase the risk of getting bearing/vibration issues. Some routers are more prone to these issues.

Thanks Emil. You are not the first to mention this. I’ve not experienced it myself but I have not used the collet at its full extension. It is definitely something to me mindful of. Regards JP

@@Smallbarnworkshop I had some thinking before putting the ER20 converter in my DW625 table router. I have also had similar thinking with my large CTM router but have not needed to try it yet (Triton collects are cheap :)).
