It's funny you put this out, I just filmed an update to mine yesterday haha. I actually have pulled mine out of my tank (and have for several months now). While I disagree on some of your points, I also agree with some. For me, I decided hang on the backs were better. I have a few tanks where I physically cannot fit anything outside of the tank, and so I need an internal filter. For my 10 gallons, I'm using the Aquarium Co-Op air pump, but for a larger tank in that situation, I think powerheads are great, to help with the noise mainly. Even now, my HOBs are louder than the powerhead was. As far as clogging, I never actually had an issue with either the polishing or the ATI Pros, unless I let it go more than a week. Another thing I really like about it, is it allowed me to keep a cycled sponge filter in the tank without the need of a noisy air pump, since my tanks are in my bedrooms. But yes, not the most practical for everyone, but definitely has its pros and cons!

The noise reduction is a big plus

The only pro I see is noise reduction. But I buy super quiet air pumps so.. idk.. I’m not on board on the powerhead in a sponge filter
@MoreChannelNoise5 жыл бұрын
Noise reduction is a big plus and you could fit 2 sponges one to act as a coarse one then put a finer one inside, als sorts of things possible.

Might've missed it in the video, but noise reduction was the main reason I was considering this. Surprised this wasn't mentioned.

Off topic of the video, I have 3 blood parrots in a 55. One of them I think is a hybrid of some kind because he’s absolutely insane. He doesn’t have the weird head shape that they normally have. The other is a bit smaller than him and seems like a normal blood parrot. They fight all the time. What are some tank mates you think I could try to put in there to spread the aggression or do you think re homing him would be a better thing to do

Have you tried matten filters with a power head,it’s what I use on my 30 and 55,also have hang on the back with prefilter on the 55 just for my African peacock cichlids,really keeps my tank clean and well oxygenated

Can you please do a video on how to mod the filter on a penguin 100 I realize now it's not a popular choice but I don't want to get rid of it quite yet... I tried setting it up similar to the aqua clear hobs but am a little lost still, not sure how well it's working yet. I am confused about where I should have the sponge and where should be empty. I'm getting better water flow than with the original filter tho

Cory from coop Aquarium showed use a clear fish bag in the tank put the filter in the bag under water close the bag so there is know mess from the filter and it stays wet so you don’t kill your biological bacteria clean the filter in the bag empty the water out fill the bag with tank water repeat till filter is clean

For me i'm not a fan of power heads, their ugly to look at. Ya it can provide more surface agitation but so can a wave maker, higher volume of air and better filtration. The other cons of a power head is now you have yet another power cord going in to the tank (if you have a heater that is) that can potentially short out and shock fish (like dying heaters can do)

Another reason is the fact that beneficial bacteria need time to have adequate contact with the water in order to consistently consume all the waste. When a high gph pump is utilized, the overall efficiency of the sponge is greatly diminished. Whenever I’ve paired power heads with dense sponges, my reasons were always for quick/easy water polishing as opposed to soda bottles stuffed with polyester filter😖.

At the end you might want to think about putting a larger sized brine shrimp hatchery cone or cones if you have plans on future breeding

It depends on the size of your Sponge versus the gph of your powerhead. Hob are susceptible to the pads you use. Same scenario. You've gave your thoughts, i totally disagree. Thanks for turning hundreds away from a GOOD IDEA.!

Cory from Aquarium Co-op popularized the sponge on the intake, and it makes sense if it's course. The fine is obviously a mess, but I don't think sponge on a powerhead is that bad. Similar concept. If you keep it course, you have the benefit of additional surface area for bacteria and an additional catch for larger detritus.

You've got to have a prefilter in the shrimp tanks anyways so I think I'm going to give a coarse prefilter a try! It reduces vibration or noise from a HOB. Any noise will be significantly quieter under water

Theirs only 4 situations where you should be using a sponge filter, In a QT tank, breeding tank, fry tank and as a back up filter in case something happens with the main filter. It should not be used as the only filtration on a tank.
@BigRalfie3555 жыл бұрын
You may want to leave that space open. That many tanks will need room to store the cleaning and maintenance supplies. As to sponge filters with powerheads, I agree that it is a bad idea, not to mention that that many powerheads in a fishroom consume more electricity than a central air pump.

I use sponge filters in all my tanks, none of them with powerheads. You lose most of the benefits when using one. I have all of my sponges on a battery powered air pump that turns on in a power outage. which is the main purpose I have sponges in all of my tanks, but i also feel its a good idea to have a air stone for added oxygen and if I'm going to use a air stone I might as well use a small sponge. That's just my opinion. To each their own!
