I'm so glad I stumbled onto this video. So let me make sure I understand the gesso part. It keeps the ink from soaking into the paper so the ink just mostly floats on top of it until dry. That way it can be manipulated more. But once dry, it's still pretty permanent. Am I understanding right? I would definitely try that. Sometimes I really need more time to play with the ink before it's permanent on the paper. I had tried fixing that by adding ingredients to the ink or paint. It never occurred to me to add something to the paper instead. 😂

This reminds me so much of alcohol inks and yupo paper. I'm wondering if gesso would improve the flow of alcohol ink on watercolor paper...Poor access to yupo pushed me into watercolor but it's finally easily available. Thank you for all you do

That is a really good question, I have not tried gesso with alcohol inks. Maybe it would be fun to try… :-)

Beautiful painting. Very interesting technique. May I ask a question? I thought painting watercolour on watercolour paper, is that a watercolour paper? so why prime the paper with gesso? Is it because you were using acrylic ink? Thanks for the tutorial.
@KarenRiceArt Жыл бұрын
Yes, I applied the Gesso because I was using inks.
@shannonw66043 ай бұрын
@@KarenRiceArt have you tried without the Gesso? I never prime my watercolour before inks. I use them the same as watercolour paints. I mix and match it as the mood strikes. I am going to try with Gesso and see how it compares.

Question: Do you have to frame under glass as you do watercolor.? I would think not since you did gesso the paper.
@KarenRiceArt Жыл бұрын
I would frame the ink painting and a glass. Mainly because it protects the painting from UV rays and moisture.

Curious Karen why you gessoed the paper? what are the advantages/disadvantages of doing this...TIA
@KarenRiceArtАй бұрын
The advantage of using gesso is that you can create different textures but it dries hard and makes the surface more stiff.

What is gesso
@KarenRiceArt Жыл бұрын
Gesso provides the protective layer between the surface and the paint.

Hi Karen I found your lesson on using Acrylic inks like Watercolour absolutely mesmerising. BUT you make it look effortless, and my two attempts so far are pretty disastrous ... I've primed 300 msg watercolour paper, but and tape it down, but finding it buckles badly, so the inks pool. And am finding it hard to get the lovely effect of distant trees as you showed it. in mine the muted turquoise is tending to spread out and loses the shapes. Perhaps I'm using too much water? I'd be very grateful for advice. Thank you.. Jane Darcy

Hi Jane, thank you for your question. It sounds like you are using too much water. Maybe experiment and try a little less 🎨
