Great instructions, i wish i found this years ago. Lima motor parts where pretty hard to find so i did this years ago. but just superglued an old walkman motor witch was too small and overpowered so ended putting a ajustable resistor to have the same speed as other unmodded trains.Ended up putting a dvd rom drive motor in and its still working even at extreme low speed. And added double pickup on motorless part. . i had to cut a shape to touch the inside of both the isolated wheels. That made a real difference. i also suggest soldering a wire to the motorless pickup metal sticking out instead of the clamp thing part as they do in factory assembly. the clamp oxidizes fast and is not always securely locked.

This new and well enginered mount comes to solve many adjustment problems of centering and for mount the new Pancake type engine like the video. In my case in the absence of this and for install these new motor, what I do is cut a lead strip of 1mm thick to the width of the new engine that is around 10 mm and I give it several turns to form a ring that serves to self center the new engine. This lead ring give more wheight to this plastic mount from Lima. Greetings from Costa Rica.

What does this adapter do, hold extra magnets to increase output, or ?
@StrathpefferJunction3 жыл бұрын
It enables you to replace the ringfield motor with a cd/dvd style motor. They can be quieter and smother, and more reliable. But make sure to use a good quality motor, like the ones I sell, no just a cheap, unbranded motor like some folk are flogging. A 50p unbranded motor will have poor internals and won't last.

Do you do one for a Hornby class 47 co-co loco if so what is the cost? Mike Bran
@StrathpefferJunction3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Many thanks for the comment. Yes, I have a kit that'll fit that model: www.strathpefferjunction.com/product/hornby-ringfield-replacement-6v-cd-motor-adaptor-kit-ha5-9mm-co-co That kit fits 99% of Hornby ringfield Class 47s, the very old silver seal version has an atypical motor, which my HA8 kit fits (but it only fits that model and no others).

I've seen these before and I'm impressed. I would love to see someone design and make a new Ringfield motor holder that would fit the old Triang Blue Pullmans. I know this is a totally different kind of motor but with £D printing it could be possible - perhaps cannibalising the gears off another loco perhaps. I have a fleet of these and they all suffer from the noisy running and reluctance to pull away at slow speeds. A dream perhaps but i would love to see it happen. thanks for the video.

Hi. Have you tried changing the motor algorithm? I think it's cv150 (from memory), but the Hornby instructions booklet dhohld confirm. Was it the Lima or Hornby c37? Can you drop me a line at info@strathpefferjunction.com? It's too easy to miss KZbin comments, unfortunately.

David, I have several old Ringfield motor locos, so forgive my ignorance here. Some are older tender drive Hornby ie 9F and several old Lima diesel locos. Can I fit these cd motors into any of them especially with your adapter? Also, what is the one I should be looking for to achieve the best results, ill check your videos as I am sure you'll have one there about fitting such and wiring it. lastly, can I chip such locos with this new motor installed, hardwire I guess. Many thanks to you Paul at Sandling Junction.
@StrathpefferJunction5 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for the message. In theory, you can upgrade just about any old UK outline ringfield motor to a CD/DVD motor. It's often best to try to get the original working better first, but if it just don't come good, a CD motor is a great option. The adaptors in the video are only for Lima ringfield motor bogies, however I've just designed a Hornby version, which I'll be making available very soon. In terms of the motor, ideally you want ~12v CD/DVD motor, but they are really pretty hard to find. I do have some in stock at 12mm, but it took me a long time to sniff them out! As for 10mm motors, I've never yet found one rated at 12v. So, for Co-Co and tender drive, unless you want to cut down a motor, your options is a 10mm or 9mm thick motor. There's only really one option for either just now, both rated 6V. For Bo-Bo or multiple units, you can go for 6V or 12v CD motors at 12mm thick. You can use a decoder with any of them, but yes, hardwring is necessary. You're also best getting a decoder with CV5 programmability, as they means you can dispense with the diode voltage dropper, which you should really use if you use a 6V motor.

Great video David. My layout build is underway. I have a lot of old Hornby locos I bought years ago, most of which I have not checked yet. If I have to replace some of the motors would I need to get 12V CD motors? Cheers. Pete
@StrathpefferJunction5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete. You could use the 6v motors, so long as you either use a diode voltage dropper or, if it's dcc, use cv5 to reduce the voltage to the motor. If you can find a 12v motor, then you don't need to worry about either of those steps...but they're quite hard to find. The net is awash with 5v (5.9v) ones, but 12v are like hens teeth.

Hi David, I have just ordered some of these super adjustable adapters and was refreshing my memory by watching your videos again. I notice that you have a Lima(?) 4 wheel bogie there with very bright wheels rather than the usual dull looking type. Where did you get these and what model was the motor bogie from? ...................................John
@StrathpefferJunction5 жыл бұрын
Hi John. Many thanks for the order. It's package up and will be off very soon. That bogie was one I bought cheap from ebay as a test rig. Unfortunately, I've no idea where the wheels come from. They do look abnormally bright for a Lima and could well have been substituted. I'll have a look later on and see if there's any markings on them. I wonder if they may be Hornby?
@canalsidingsmodelrailway34115 жыл бұрын
I have tried a few Hornby wheelsets in Lima locos with little success. The gears appear not to be the same size/pitch. Some later Lima Locos were equipped with bright wheelsets and these run much better that the originals. But I have not found any bo-bo classes with bright wheels. I do have a Lima class 20 which I fitted with Ultrascale wheels but these are obvious having smaller flanges and narrower treads. Your bogie is intriguing. What diameter are the wheels? If they are smaller than 14.4mm they may come from a DMU or class 43. ....................John
@StrathpefferJunction5 жыл бұрын
I'll have a measure up this evening and let you know. Perhaps it's a rare bogie, which is a shame given its been my test rig for a while! I do wonder it's it's perhaps a rail car or DMU. It certainly is a compact version.
@StrathpefferJunction5 жыл бұрын
They look to be 14mm diameter, John.
@canalsidingsmodelrailway34115 жыл бұрын
That puts it firmly into the "Loco" type. As well as the DMUs the only other Lima bogies to use small wheels were the Class 73 and the Deltic. In the case of the Deltic the bogies were made to HO scale although the rest of the loco is to OO scale!. By a process of elimination your bogie is from a Class 33 so I did a bit more digging but so far I have found no actual evidence that a shiny wheel variant was made. I will keep looking. ...................John
