Don't cut top on milk jug, fill with smaller rocks/pebbles to about 1", and fill with water. Put cap back on loosely. This will keep the critters out and help with evaporation. If worried about algae, spray paint the jug. FYI, the more you tighten the jug top, the more you can slow the drip.

@@ramonepedgio5964 Generally, from a lot of experience, algae won't hurt. But, in this case, algae can clog the holes. Give it a shot. It's living matter. In hydro, algae can certainly wreak havoc. It clogs lines and will suffocate roots. It will take over is very short order due to the nutrients.

Also, if you live in areas with shorter growing seasons, plants that prefer warmer conditions, you can fill a water jug with warm water and place it next to the plant to extend their growing for a bit. You can also do this with stones, as they will absorb any warmth from the sun and radiate it

You can also bury the milk jug just half way and put pin holes across each side near the bottom . Also put one pinhole in the cap or near the cap ( this will keep it from collapsing inwards as the water gets drawn out ). Just put plants around the milk jug .You will be able to see the water level through the top of the jug and refill as needed.i have done this with soda bottles.

You realize you drink out of these things every single day of your life, right? 99% of all the food you consume is wrapped in plastic. The govt. is spraying plastic particles from the sky in some places. Your polyester clothes leech microplastic into your bloodstream. There's good news though, earthworms actually eat and digest plastic, or the bacteria in their gut does, reducing it back into benign chemical forms. 😊

That’s a great idea I wish I seen this clip when my strawberries were growing. The birds were eating them up before I could pick them 😂
@pamthompson3170
@pamthompson3170 6 ай бұрын
I've seen people hang tinfoil pie tins on strings over strawberries, they twist, flutter in the wind scares birds. Old cds would work too. Also when cut bottom off jug, setting jug over plants, if you don't have the metal stakes you could set the jug slightly off center. Put a long stick or what ever through the top of the milk jug and push the stick into the ground of course watch out for the tomato. Saves a couple of steps, and if you don't have the wire stakes it saves buying those. Recycle your long tree triming branches as the sticks through the jug. Recycle the jugs in the fall, the sun breaks them down after awhile, and use the sticks for your fire starter in your fire ring. Start over saving jugs for next year, if you don't drink a lot of milk find a neighbor with a bunch of kids. They'll be happy to give them to you. See then they don't have to deal with them. Someone is always triming trees just ask to use some, or ask to help trim their trees. They get basic triming done, and you get you get your sticks. I had a green house program at my school, l scounged all sorts of stuff for the green house. The stuff like starting trays for example, some deli boxes, pastry trays, Styrofoam trays. It takes time to gather the stuff up the school staff is usually willing to assist, just set out box for donations. If you Recycle it saves you $$$$ for other stuff, if you get plant trays and such donated, if used you might give them a quick wash to ward off any pests that might be living on them. Have fun.

To protect from frost you do not need the stake or wire to stake the milk jug to the ground. Only cut three sides on the bottom. Fold the bottom to the side and put a rock or brick on it. Protects from frost, without buying metal stakes. Great post. With the bottoms cut that way you can stack the jugs on top of each other the way you stack paper cups. They take up less room to store.

I kept wondering about this. I'm in Pennsylvania, USA and it's very cold here. I had a lot of stuff in my plastic greenhouse die at the end of the season from cold and figured that was full of more warm air than a tiny milk jug could be.. i considered a milk jug and then plastic over top, but with our below freezing temps, i think my best bet is not to spend the time planting outdoor yet and just sprout and keep everything indoor until last frost (which for me is mid-May).

Been doing this for years in southern UK, using hundreds of bottles. Make two holes well apart so that the water can reach 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock of the plant roots rather than being a single point source. Caveats: we used old nappy pins to make holes. This caused problems because the inevitable growth of algae /bacterial film inside the bottle would eventually clog the holes. So yeah, a nail is best. Also, don't expect to re-use all your bottles for more than 2 summers, the plastic has a limited life in the constant UV. Just keeping saving bottles all year round.
