Actually I stayed in Paris a few years ago in a hotel in the 9th. Opposite there was another 2 star hotel. At 6pm, there was a queue of migrants, their ID hotel cards in hand (state provided) waiting outside the establishment. So hotel rooms are also provided in France. I agree, the Navy and the army should be called out. The army sent to France to stop the embarcations on the dinghies, and the fleet to make a barrage. There should be a deterrent, such as a place to send them to. Stop making life easy for them. Bread and water to survive, tents, no pocket money, no phones given. Stop giving money to the RNLI and to the French centres. Tough conditions mean no incentives.

The obvious parallel to this approach is the useless decades long War on Drugs. We try stricter checks at customs, more stop and search, look for laboratories, classify more substances, reschedule others, etc. Yet both demand and consumption have generally increased. In addition, trading has become more competitive and increasingly violent eg. county lines. Meanwhile, the obvious and really cheap solution to our illegal immigration by using the Royal Navy to humanely return them to France is strangely out of the question. .

A comprehensive Royal Navy patrol of the Channel could be coupled with the redirected expertise of the RNLI. I'm sure illegal immigrants could be returned quite safely, particularly when found relatively close to the French coast. One might argue that interception is actually a humane act as being promptly 'rescued' by professionals is surely far safer than attempting to cross in an overcrowded boat.
