Great, Maestro. I mostly appreciate this tiny dimension because it gives an augmented value to the artwork. Well done.

This is what it’s really a chiaroscuro. On the book of Vasari on technique he describes what a really chiaroscuro is, the dark are thing glazes with Brown Van Dyck and Sandarac, the light are very thin tones not built up. Almost you see the canvas, the more and more glazes the dark gets darker and the image becomes 3-D. You are trying to build a 3-D in a flat surface. Most art historians never read that and don’t know what that technique means. I did a painting of my daughter and it’s so real. Not all the artists used a color background they use a white canvas mostly in Italy. Try with a white yeso canvas and glaze the darks. You can achieve the same with less work. ❤

This technique aligns more so with the Flemish and Dutch painters of the 16th-17th centuries. When looking at the works of artists like Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Jordaens in person, you see a physical and 3-dimensional build up of the lights and thin, transparent shadows, as well as toned grounds. The impasto lights and transparent shadows further emphasis the light effect.

На цветной имприматуре ( тёмном фоне) легче добиваться объёма чем на белом холсте, потому что можно работать в две стороны: в сторону осветления и сторону утемнения.

Grisaille is one of the best techniques for painting with great detail, although the alla prima technique is very good for reproducing masters such as those of the new figuration of the London school.

Although this copy has captured the forms pretty accurately, however there are many of the finer subtleties present within the original that are lost. Which demonstrates how masterful the artist was painting the original portrait.

And what are these finer subtleties?

Paint the white canvas brown, and then white again, and brown again, why?
@jean-paulvaneck5309Ай бұрын
So you use white only, and creating the slight value shifts by thinning it more, or adding a touch of black?
@tylerhughesartАй бұрын
Exactly, I alter the value by applying the lead white more transparently. No black needed
@francoistourigny3006Ай бұрын
Can we use zinc white instead of lead white? thank you.
@tylerhughesartАй бұрын
@@francoistourigny3006 I'd recommend not using zinc white at all in your process as it's known to be an unstable and weak pigment that leads to cracking

I believe if more new painters painted with a grisaille underpainting they would achieve more accuracy On the other hand if new painters has to painted like this, they would give up. I use grisaille when I paint complicated compositions. For portraiture, I do use this method. Too tedious and labor intensive.
