Dear sir, I am very much impressed with the way you taught us this old masters technique. Earlier I never knew the "value" of black and white layer but with your video, now I do. One question sir, ' As you painted the leaves, do we need to draw veins again and again with a darker green and leave the lighter areas untouched? Hey Rajni and thanks so much for your lovely message :) There are different approaches that you can go. You can just to the shaddows in the underlayer and paint the details in with the colored paint afterwards. You can also paint the details in the very beginning with the black paint and glaze over it. There are different approaches to each technique and use the one you feel most secure with. This video was meant for those who feel confident in monochromatics - so just using black and white or brown and white or just one color and the white of the canvas - but curious to try full color. Using the entire pallette is hard in the beginning and this is a nice 'in between step' to feel a bit more confident. Nowadays there is no real need to make an underpainting as the masters did as our oil colors work different and they are way less pricy then way back in history. :)

Hey Gary, well you can apply this technique also for acrylic paints. Just thin the glazing paint with more water or an acrylic medium and go ahead. You can also make the underpainting with acrylics and glaze with oil colors if you like to do that. Never glaze with acrylics over oil though ;) The glazing also works when you have a charcoal or graphite drawing and glaze over with pastels. I also made an experiment video about that technique :)

I have not yet done a glazing video for a portrait. I use the technique for portraits to shift colors and to increase contrast in certain areas, yes. It also works for water soluable oil colors but they are a bit tricky to use and behave differently then regular oil paints. I tried using them once and messed up. I found them way harder to work with and they did not behave like I was used to with oils only. Fingers crossed you have more luck with them :) The technique itself is what it is - no matter what subject or person you paint. It required some practice to get a feeling for it though :)

Thanks for your reply. I can't use regular oil paints because of not having a sense of smell, so I thought using the WM ones would be a solution. I discovered my problem with chemical odours after using alcohol inks & not realising I was breathing in fumes. Maybe I'd better stick to watercolour or acrylics. I just love the look of oil paintings & this demo of yours was great.

well when it comes to fumes the watercolors might be the best solution or why not start with colored pencils. Those take much longer but overall has the least fumes. Acrylics also produce chemical fumes and the water soluable oil colors also kind of smell the same as regular acrylics. At least the ones do that I had. Oils do smell a bit but when u have plain oil colors they only smell like linseed oil which is not toxic. There are oil colors with added substances mixed into them to increase viscosity or drying time - these produce a different set of fumes which I do not like either. Mine are plain linseed oil and the pigment which works okay for me. I still put them away in another room to let them dry :)

Thank you for your comment :) Well the Grisaille is basically the underpainting in monochromatic colors which I assume you know already. Thanks for this lesson in Glazing. I would like to know just how many layers of glazing can one apply? Is there a limit? The underpainting you demonstrated here is known as a Grissaille. Like many artists today, I have never used this approach myself either, but it is certainly a good method to adopt as shown by you. I generally apply paint in layers straight from the tube with very little mixing of colours on the pallet. Any colour mixing is done directly on the canvas. I then use a glaze over the whole canvas allowing to dry before adding the next layer of paint. I repeat this process until completion, after which, I add a couple of layers of glaze over the whole canvas to finish. I do not know if this approach to painting in oils is correct according to rules because I am largely self taught.

Paul Abel hi Paul and thanks for your comment. Sorry for my late reply. I tried not to touch my phone as often over the Xmas days :) This video was intended for those wanting to transition to color and are afraid using it directly. I personally do not use the grisaille underpainting myself and directly work with colored paint but I thought it always was kind of valuable knowing the methods used in the last. At least a very simplified version of it. Basically you can add as many glazes as you want as long as you follow the far over lean rule...which makes things tricky with too many layers as the umbers for example dry quicker than a titanium white or cad reds do for example. This is pigment based...so I usually do not go too crazy with layering and end up with a base layer and 1 or 2 detail layers in the end. My paint layers also are very thin so I do not expect any cracking to happen as they dry quickly even without having any medium like liquid used. In the Final steps i use a damar varnish or the gamvar varnish to seal everything :)

thanks for your feedback :) It was one of my very first videos so there was still some things to improve. Acrually I cannot even tell anymore if there was a reference photo or if I painted it from imagination... When it comes to the opacity...it vary that depending what I need at the current time. If it is more for fine-tweaking you can use more layers with a thinner mix and in the first layers I most of times let the paint more on the opaque side...

liquin kind of breaks the rule of fat over lean but it for sure depends on how thick your layers are. I paint pretty thinly - especially when it comes to portraits. on impasto I would make sure the upper layers are fatter. The liquin itself makes the paint film more stable and durable as well but no clue if that still would be risky to crack when used for thick paint layers. I never had issues so far but..again...thin layers...

It was among the first ones that I uploaded and about 3 months ago it had 300 views or less...It was meant as a fun video as I received many questions about realism and that people are afraid of using colors (not only in oils) and this was a good was to tell a somewhat 'in between' solution to get a feeling for colors and still do not need to fear them. So I've had trouble understanding what people meant by 'glazing' in oils and this video helped clarify it so much! So it is just really another technique of painting an oil painting?

Ababy it is a technique One can use to create depth or to change colors and such. Of course you can also build up your entire painting by only glazing layer over layer. I usually use it to tint colors or when I need some refined things like smoke or frozen water or such to create some depth in them. Bottom line it is something an oil painter should know to be able to use it, when needed :))

Very useful explanation of the technique. It sounds a less uptight, complicated and scary this way. I was wondering one thing: Is it a problem to use a mix of linseed oil and turpentine instead of liquin? Do you know how their effects may differ? I have never tried liquin (or any pre-mixed medium for that matter).

Hey Tamara, sorry for my late reply. there only was so little time the last days. You can of course use linseed oil or turpentine tu dilute the colors. The advantage of liquin is just its fast-drying character and viscosity. It makes your paint layer dry in up to one day which helps a lot especially in glazing. When you use linseed oil you will get a similar optical effect but have quite a long drying time, before you can add another layer of glaze. Turpentine is not that ideal I would think as this just dilutes the paint and reduces its strength as a paint film. So the pigments might lift off the painting, once you glaze over it again. Especially if the next glaze layer also is turpentine heavy. I cannot tell for sure as I never used it that way but physics-wise I would think this might happen.

@@MKLGRMFineArt So cool you're checking in :D Like you predicted i indeed had some difficulty working with the turpentine, but when i was very careful i managed to work with it. With one of my two experiments i also painted the underpainting way too rough. To hide that i had to use glazes that were more opaque than i would like. Other than than the two portraits turned out very nicely. I had never seen the effect in real life so it blew me away a little :) It was definitely worth the large amount of time i put in so I'll definitely use it in the future when the painting calls for it. All in all i learned a lot so the experient succeeded regardless of the result :)

One of my favorite artists, Maxfield Parrish apparently painted several layers of glazes to create the vibrant colors he desired.

dany Brassard hey Dany :) thanks for watching!! Yes if you glace the colors you need to wait until each layer is dry. Otherwise you smudge the colors and you quickly get muddy tones. If you use a medium like liquin drying goes pretty quickly when you make light layers. If you thin you paints with paint thinner only you need to be super careful as this does not create a strong surface when it is dry. So you risk lifting up pigments when you apply the next layer. You can also dry brush the layers by just using tiny amounts of paint in a „dry brush“ and apply it like makeup. It needs a bit training though. I will send you a link where I used the dry brushing for final touches...

magda markides don’t be anxious :) I was afraid of oils for so many years and now I love it way way more than painting in acrylics :) it is not that difficult just make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :) Glazing also works for acrylics if you want to try that there first :) You can do it :)) sure if it!!! 🤗🤗

same here. If you like to see some more realism tutorials of mine you can head over to my playlist section and find them there. Judging the values works best when working on a toned canvas. I usually make a print of the original photo and make little color tests on the print to get as close to the color I need. One of the best oil painting teachers is the 'drawmixpaint' channel. I really like his way of teaching :)

Wow, this is beautiful. Kind of a combination between oil and watercolor. I really like the look of transparent paint and I plan to experiment with this technique. One question for you - Is there a certain black and white you would recommend for the value underpainting? Does the black need to lean opaque or transparent? Thanks again! Very instructive.
