You're the best. Going from out the point of the students rather than useless tips from what you're selling. One of the reasons foreigners, who even those used to learning many languages, have trouble with Portuguese is that so many of the teachers are more interested in what they're selling than what we need to know. When I was teaching English to the Dutch I used to concentrate on patterns of their mistakes instead of concentrating on this or that. When I picked out the patterns I could help them to make progress more quickly. And that gave them more encouragment. Progress builds on progress.

Obrigada, Max. That's why I show off saying I'm a polyglot. It helps immensely when you understand the students' perspective. Whenever I hear "a mistake", I automatically translate the sentence into their language and help them see why they said it that way. Your comment actually reminded me when I had a German housemate in Amsterdam. We agreed to speak only in Dutch. I'd notice her mistakes and make a mental note for when I'd learn German in the future. We're all a bit mad somehow, toch?

The words you said in the exemples at the end of the video are pretty much Brazilian Portuguese rather than Spanish. I mean, the way as you spread all sillable clearly sounds as Brasileiro. We say até (comparing to Spanish hasta), coberto (agains cobierto) and embora (rather than sin embargo). Anyway. very good hints. Obrigado.

I should have been more careful in the choice of words, so that they'd be exactly the same in both PT and SP, but in the end if you already speak Spanish, I'm showing how you may be tempted to pronounce PT words in a Spanish way.

@@thelanguageunschool That's ok. I just meant you are correclty sounding like as Brazilian accent (sotaque). No problem at all for comparison, but that wasn't Spanish, actually still Portuguese "a la tropical". 🙂

Hi, Catarina. It may sound odd to ask here, but what level of Portuguese would I need to teach Mahjong? I'm a big fan of Richii Mahjong. Suppose I want to teach a Portuguese friend how to play Richii Mahjong, what level of Portuguese would I need to teach it in a clear and easily understandable way? Consider the two levels of teaching: 1. Teach all the game rules and mechanics, such as how to win a hand, how to calculate points, the overall game flow, etc. What level of Portuguese would I need to teach these? 2. Apart from 1, also teach the basic tactics and strategies, such as tile efficiency, defense tactic, push/fold judgement, etc. What level of Portuguese would I need to teach these?

@user-jg1vx4fy7t I don't think a level would help you. The question is, what are you doing to learn the language you need to teach Mahjong in Portuguese? You can learn the language more effectively via an interest and need you have.

And the Queen hates words (verbs particularly) which start with de - that part often is totally overlooked.
