I got: x^8 - x^7 + 2x^6 - 2x^5 + 2x^4 - 2x^3 + 2x^2 - 2x + 2 - 2/(x+1) I was taught to simplify such that the degree of the polynomial in the denominator should always be greater than that of the numerator.

x^18, common denominator isx^3 which gives ( x^9+x^12)/x^3

I still am not sure why you can't get a common denominator by multiplying both bottom values, but I see how you got your answer John,I must be missing something

Can't we divide x8 + x10 by x²+X in numerator such that we can cancel out the denominator and quotient is answer .

x7(1 + x2)/(x + 1) (x7 means x raised to the seventh and x2 means x squared). woulda been neater if the numerator in the original problem was x8 - x10!!

Divide both by x so you've got (x^7+x^9)/(x+1) Then: X^7*(x^2+1)/(x+1) Which is: x^7*(x-1)*(x+1)/(x+1) (Binomial) So: X^7*(x-1)

I'm starting to often know where you are going though not always my gut feeling that the answer always seems unfinished.. and unsatisfying. One never knows what x is .It seems that the only one satisfied is the teacher. Am I the only one that feels this way.
