This method of instruction is phenomenal. I only recently started getting your videos in my feed and at some point i really need to go back and start this series from the beginning. My guess for the final position is... ...e5. Blockades black's e pawn, locks down black's f pawn, and effectively cuts off both of black's bishops from the kingside. I'm guessing the black would respond with b5, then white would go Nd6 after that? And if Bxd6 then Rxd6?

Thank you soo much for your kind feedback. Such comments really motivate me to pursue this further! Stay tuned for more content, and please check out the previous episodes! :) And please share it with chess friends so we can reach more people! Great answer to the homework position. But can Black really go ...b5 after e4-e5? :)

@@Dr.CansClinicgood point. One reason b5 stuck out to me right away was that it was at least starting to open up squares for black's bishop. Tbh i'm really struggling to find other candidate moves for black in the position. First things that come to mind are Ne7 to start trying to get the knight unstuck, or f6 to challenge the e5 pawn.

Great examples, am loving these! I recently started your Crime & Punishment course, which is going well, it's really improving the way I look at positions. (Although I mentally renamed it to CSI:Chess) 🙂

One idea: I think many of us are anxious to find instructional youtube videos, esp. re middlegame ideas and strategy, that are related to the specific openings we play. However, it's extremely hard to find this kind of content. I would think that if you include the names of the openings from which the positions you analyze come from, your videos would start showing up in searches for this kind of content. (As a specific example of what I have in mind: if I search "Dr. Can's Clinic" and "Alapin," I find one video where you put this as a time stamp chapter heading. More please!)

Thank you so much for this extremely encouraging thoughts and support! Such comments really keep me going. I really appreciate your recommendation as well, thanks! I will keep that in mind. I will start tagging opening names in time stamps for that given pawn structure.

Homework position: I'm really not sure, actually. I think that Black wants to play e5 on the next move so that the dark squared bishop is blocked and the light squared bishop is also just staring at its own frozen pawn's butt for the time being. So I was thinking to either play e5 myself, or play f4 so that we have 3 defenders and he can no longer push. But I decided against f4 because even though the black bishop can't go to b6 right now, I still think my king is too weak, and he can just play Re8 to prepare e5 anyway. So I want to push e5 because even though it also blocks the dark squared bishop, there are no real hopes for attacking the black King in this position, and e5 frees the e4 square for the light squared bishop and helps the knight get to d6. If he trades that knight, he has a passed pawn defended by a rook stuck in his camp, though I'm not sure if that pawn might not be too difficult for me to defend actually. I have noticed a trend in your videos where sometimes the best move allows the opponent to get a passer but for some reason the passer is not scary whatsoever. However, in an actual game I would be sh***ing myself if my opponent had a passed pawn like that, and would not think that giving better squares to my pieces sufficiently compensates for that. But I think that's mostly because I have zero clue how to convert an advantage caused by good piece placement, whereas I do know how to get destroyed by an enemy passer lol.

Smyslov played e5! here. Activated his lsb and buried the opp lsb, prevented ...e5. ...f6 was followed by f4, keeping the important e5 pawn. He won a beautiful game on the queenside, using active pieces.

Spoilers ahead - No engine - white e5 opens up g2 bishop on diagonal and stops black - it restricts both black bishop diagonals. The white e5 pawn is now defended twice. The white bishop on c3 is separated by two spaces away from the black knight in a motif position controlling it. Thus, no black piece would be active. If black advances b5 then Nd6 outpost is excellent. Nd6 is probably next anyway. If black advances f6 then Re1 or f4 can be calculated. f4 may be possible because opening up the king side would favor white. If that doesn't work Re1 is too defensive and therefore best to allow a future fxe5 which would leave black with doubled pawns blocking the bishops.

F4 stops the Bishop or Knight from coming in. You are illustrating a wonderful example of "The Art of Awakening Pieces" or its close cousin " The Art of Burying Pieces." I have purchased these courses yet, but I intend to once I finish your calculation course. Nice job on today's presentation.

@@jimmccann3856 I am not good on sacking for position. It is probably one of the next areas for me to advance my skill. I see your point and thanks for the lesson. I am thinking that after black e5 I would not go fxe5. I would instead go f5. Both black bishops would be hindered.

@@Dr.CansClinic I will have to go buy the course on Chessable, why on Chessable is there such a huge Price Spike from Regular Course being $20 to Same Course with Videos being almost $100. Wasn’t sure why that is on Chessable. Is it just the amount of Work Videos take to make for Teachers?

e5 then if black goes ..f6?! f4! and black pieces are completely buried , very hard to make progress without losing something. My feeling is that black might even have better chances if they sacrifice the N on e5 rather than ..f6?! ?? Anyway its a very hard position to play as black.
