You cut out how you put your rows together at the end. It went to another corner set in triangle. Waaaah, I wanted to see that part. You are a fabulous teacher and it's very relaxing watching your videos. Thank you for sharing and your time. You truly are priceless. Barb from Arizona

Well sort of, Barb. I added the last row of one block with two triangles on each side to show the general idea of how it goes together. The video just got so long I didn't want to add more! LOL I'll do another, smaller quilt that will be easier to manage on camera. Turning a quilt on-point makes it a bit bigger which is an added benefit but hard to get it all on a screenshot. In the meantime, check out my pretty, pink FQ On-Point quilt on 31May. The video includes a diagram showing how it works. You can also download my All Blocked In pattern (free) if you don't have it already - it's in the description of that same video. That pattern has an on-point quilt with diagrams and instructions. Sorry to leave you hanging on at the end! Thank you so much for following along! This was an awesome quilt to make and turned to be much more than I expected - I love it! 😍 Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I'm so glad I saw a picture of this quilt. I'm a beginner to quilting. Started 3-4 weeks ago. 1st quilt unfinished as I need to do the backing. Made a baby quilt, then 8 pads (which could pass as dinner place mats too😊) but made them to go on the arms of our new garden chairs as they irritate our arms, which i finished yesterday. I then started using up oddments to make 1/4 log cabin blocks, but not very happy or impressed with them...until I saw your on point log cabin quilt this evening. I absolutely love it, and see my blocks in a totally different light. I can now continue with enthusiasm. Thankyou for giving me the encouragement I needed to carry on with this project. Your on point quilt is beautiful 😍 ❤

Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate the squaring up of blocks. It absolutely matters! Many Quilters dislike this part of the process, but taking the time to square up each block ensures that each block will line up in the final step (sewing your blocks together). Many Thanks 😊
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 2 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome, Lindsay! I'm one of those who lets the squaring up process slide at times. But putting this on point could have been very difficult without nice, straight squares. It's definitely important to understand how to square up blocks. It also really helps to minimize how much you may need to trim your quilt top to get it square as well. It all certainly works together for a better result! Thanks so much for following along. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura. That segment is referring to trimming the block. The point I was making is to start in one corner and square it up first. Then trim the other sides to equal the size block you need. The idea is to keep the small corner square as large as possible, and trim the outer edges as needed. I hope this helps to clarify for you. Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

Great tutorial. I had similar habit of shortening my quarter inch at the end of the seam. I had a friend who is a great quilter tell me to slow down at the end of the seam. It is apparently the lack of material at the end that the feeders do not tend to keep it in line. If you find you cannot slow down chain piece or put in an ender in after your seam as trying to get it in evenly will force you to slow down. I have found I am having this happen less often doing this. Again thanks for you great tutorial.

Lea, did you add a white border around the edges of this quilt top? I have some, enough for just a 1” border of the same purple material I used for the sashing. What do you recommend for finishing. Border no border, pieced border, binding? What type of quilting design do recommend for this quilt.
@MsPenske
@MsPenske 5 ай бұрын
I don't know if you have been asked and answered this question already. It has to do with squaring up the block. I noticed you squared up the block before adding the sashing. Is that because the sashing was an after thought? Should I add the sashing I am doing (1-1/2") sashing, should I square up the block to 10" before the sashing or square it up like to 11" after I add the sashing? Or should I do both?

After making three of these quilts I've made a few discoveries. There will be a video with this info in a couple months as I'm finished the third one now. First, the large block may vary in size depending on how the strips are sewn on. I think in the beginning I was holding my strips more firmly than necessary and should have let them sew loosely from my hand. What I found happened is when the large square was into quarters, the out rows tended to pull back towards the corner due to the tension I put on them while sewing. That meant I didn't have nice even squares. Therefore when I was squaring up my blocks, I had to choose between getting the small center squares a uniform size, or the outer strip the same width. I chose to keep the centers as large as possible. That meant not all the outer strips were even widths. It really became noticeable when they were laid out together. The narrow strip worked great to keep everything aligned well with a uniform finish. Once you make your first one you may see what I'm talking about. The alternative is to precut all your strips but that's not what I want to do. This is a gorgeous pattern and I love the look. It's just taken a few times to work out the kinks! Thanks so much for watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I have seen a quilt as go video log cabin where the strips are sewn down then bent backwards at the end point with a scissors cut off at join. Will that method help keep a block more squared. I don’t want to have to precut to size each strip round either. After all it is scrappy!

If you a half-square triangle for setting, aren't the outside edges on the bias?
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 2 жыл бұрын
Yes they are, Cathy. That's why I baste the cut edges before sewing them to the quilt. That gives the bias edge more support and it's less apt to stretch so much. It's a method that works very well for me. Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I intend to make this quilt next. But I'm thinking that when I trim it down, I will use the edges of the last 2 strips and not the non-matching strips in the opposite edge. The last 2 strips still have the straight edges showing. Would this make the "inside" of the quarter too lop-sided? ... or does that really matter........
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, Susan! I trimmed the inside corner first - the small pink square- just to make sure my block was straight. Then I trimmed the outside strips to get the size I wanted. If you want to skip the narrow border, just keep contrast in mind for your outer strip. That's what mine blocks were missing. Then as long as you have a good square you'll be fine. It might even be helpful to use a 3" outer strip to give you plenty of wiggle room! Just in case. 😊 I always like to allow a 'fudge factor' for the unexpected. LOL Let me know how it goes. I love this pattern! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I would of thought that those wavering edges would just be the fabric pulled, stretched etc. I would of tried to “fix” it via a steam iron before cutting. But I guess that would be wrong.
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise 2 жыл бұрын
You can certainly try a couple different things, Sally. You're right about how handling the fabric can distort how it lays. I try to keep the cutting as a last resort so as not to come up short on the edges as that works best for me. Try a few different techniques to see what you like. Check out the newest Christmas version of this quilt, Paula! This tutorial came out about two weeks ago and has more descriptive details showing how to put a quilt on point. There are a lot more steps included showing how it's done and should answer many of your questions. Thanks for your comment and I appreciate you watching! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I just LOVE your tutorials! I was sewing up some 9 patch blocks, using some charm packs that I’ve had for quite some time. Well…. I wasn’t too. happy with the blocks together, so I did the disappearing 9 patch with the cuts straight down the middle, each way. I’ve been doing different layouts and took a break to watch your video. When you were showing the different layouts, I saw a bigger version of the disappearing 9 patch! What I mean is; when you have the block with the small squares making the one square in the middle, just turn the opposing squares so that the small squares are diagonal from each other! I only saw that in my mind from turning my disappointing 9 patch blocks into disappearing 9 patch blocks! 🫣

That's fantastic, Cindy! Being able to see patterns like that comes in very handy when quilting. Glad you've found a solution that will work well for your blocks! I recently did a tutorial on a few of my 'ugly' quilts and realized they just needed tweaking. Sometimes taking another look can change how you see it all come together. Have fun with your 'new' quilt! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise
