I think what people get upset about is certain people shaming people because it doesn't look like they used a knife enough. Use is completely different for everyone. Do you work in an office, construction or law enforcement. 3 completely different use cases yet all are being used. I'm not saying you do this. I have seen people doing this. It personally doesn't bother me.but I think some people aren't as mentally stable. That sounded really bad. I just don't know a better way 2 say it. Lol.

KZbin influencers dont often listen to testers. They want to buy and sell knives for a profit usually. And they want free knives so they won't give constructive feedback. The market is swayed by the ignorant. That's why we see poorly performing m390 /20cv. Cause manufacturer's listen to sales numbers.

Companies need to do better. Best one line to sum that up. And some my read that as do more. I think they could do less/the same and still put out some worthy products. I said from the beginning that I didn’t understand why BM chose to sell hype by using 3v on the Bailout when they’ve done a wonderful job (historically) with 154cm and that steel would serve the role better without even going outside of their wheelhouse, so to speak. Maybe a run on sentence, but I’m tired and distracted 😂😂😂

If you have a factory edge on a knife and you’re telling someone, definitively, how “good” or “bad” a knife’s steel is, you’re doing it wrong. Full stop. I’d never tell someone how to use a knife, but I don’t think anyone could give advice on something they haven’t fully experienced. To Erica’s point about the 30 day rule.

Keep up the great work Clint! When I see “use your shit” I understand it the way you explained it. For me it means getting to know your tools such as a knife by using it like our elders did. To see how the knife design works for you and how a certain steel performs for you from use and also from sharpening your knife. I do remember CRK changing their heat treat because the knife community was Noticing their edges were rolling. I also remember bench made not quite living up to their words on the heat treat. All these changes happen because of stand up people in our community like you who spoke about their observations. I get wanting to justify what we spent or feeling good about our purchase. I don’t understand why anyone would knock someone that is giving great advice like ”use your shit!” to better understand their tool.

💯, man. I think it all comes back to ego. If I’m being 💯, I think we have several people in the community flat out marketing for these companies with impunity, we have people that blindly listen to people because they “like” them, very few know how to sharpen so they cannot tell you first hand how something is or isn’t performing, and nobody wants to talk about or admit any of those things. I’m sure I’ve made more enemies by saying that, but I’ve seen it and experienced it in conversation for years. I know it’s true. I don’t just sit back and admire a problem though. Great topic. Not sure I followed some of the "if you know you know," but what I could follow I agree with. There is a ton of BS and mis-information in the knife community. Also people are falling prey to the marketing of knifemakers (perfect example is the Kershaw you show). Just because you get a buzzword "supersteel" doesn't mean you're getting a 'better" performer than S30V. Also people who follow certain makers and pay $$$ because it's an "X." Be critical and look at what you are buying, and if the quality doesn't match the price tag, chances are you're falling for the hype.

I'm not totally sure what's going on, I fall in and out of the knife community and I tend to avoid talking to a lot of people because of all the issues with getting along. With the "you should have bought this *insert expletives*" or the why would you buy that? That's junk, this steels better, that steels best, if you don't sharpen this way blah blah blah. I don't really care. I just buy what I like regardless of political opinions or geographic boundries. You make a good product I want or need, I buy your products. The whole steel thing that started a while back, I kinda get it. Not getting what's promised, or empty claims with this being x amount better. At the same time with the use your shit philosophy that I also employ, it doesn't really matter. If your knife dulls or breaks in one or 2 uses, you got the wrong tool for what you're doing. I can edc a victorinox for a week without as much as a stropping and that's one of the softer stainless steels out there. I've also wrecked k390, s110v and stuff in a day abusing the knife. One of the reasons I've been watching your videos for so long is because of your philosophies, they tend to align with mine a lot. No nonsense and objective about a lot of topics too. Like the Case ss vs cv video a handful of years ago. There is some real big fan boys in that crowd. The knives are ok, they do what they need to, I was surprised about the result myself. But you didn't just take a forum post or something an old guy said who's only had that one knife for 30 years and run with it. You sought out your own info. There's better and worse knives out there. To me I buy and use what I like because we have that luxury. I'm grateful that I can have too many choices. When people pass up on something they like because it's "only s30v" or "only 154cm" it just gets under my skin. Not that long ago they were "super steels" themselves. I don't really get it honestly. I love the super steel trends and that it gives a healthy competition and a strive for better products, but I also feel these days it's starting to go too far. I have seen some posts where a guy is asking for recommendations and they're like, "it needs to be 67hrc, stainless, 4.5 inches long, .009" behind the edge, able to baton bricks all day etc." Then I'll find out sometimes that they work in an office or something and use it to open mail. It's fine to want the best of something but I kinda wish people would think about it more and realize there's so many more options your limiting yourselves from by being so fickle or stubborn. I feel people need to start doing better, and companies need to do better too or at least just be more honest or transparent. Anyways I kinda forgot the whole point of the video and went on my own little rant, but I hope all is well, or you're getting good some free time in haven't seen a video in a bit from ya. Best of days to all this year.

10 years ago I was happy with my spyderco vg10 endura, just using it a little bit and infrequently. Then after a while I started using it for a little bit harder tasks and was pretty let down. Swore off the vg10. Ended up getting into the harder tool steels which where much better in the edc and housework type roles. Then after getting into kitchen knives found the vg10 from others to be pretty good, admittedly using it in a different role, and knives with better geometry. Rambling, but I just wonder how spyderco is doing with the vg10 now and if we are going to see commonly available knives with geometry at least a little closer to kitchen knives. I mean, look at the bevel on that kershaw in the video, maybe it has been sharpened an inordinate amount of times, but really why does it have to be like that? Well, gotta sharpen a few times to get a better edge usually, starting with an already not ideal behind the edge width, then at that point what do you end up with...guess it was a rant post 😁, but really, I am curious, how is the spyderco vg10 now, I'm assuming still crap except for use opening boxes or such, because I don't really want to invest the time myself on trying to find out again if someone already knows.
@Alumapro23
@Alumapro23 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! No rambling. That’s exactly spot on. Use and experience with different knives puts perspective on what’s “good” and what’s “bad”. That’s what a lot of people seem to be missing, IMHO. The bevel on the knife looks that way because it went into CATRA for testing. They sharpened the blade there. NASTY sharpening on all the knives sent in. If you haven’t seen the CATRA stuff it’s all on my YT. When it came back, it went to Outpost76 for comparison testing to CATRA. He sharpened it there as well. He uses a standardized angle to keep all of his tests comparable. Because the blade stock is so thin, the 16ish degree per side angle he uses is wide. 👊
@turing2376
@turing2376 2 жыл бұрын
@@Alumapro23 yeah, I saw those videos, did realize that that knife's bevel in particular might in part have something to do with the CARTA stuff so maybe not the best example. But, just in general I'm sure you know what I talking about. With these pocket knives the bevel widens quickly with sharpening, especially when you want to put a nice acute angle on it like you mentioned. What a treat to go and sharpen or use a Japanese kitchen knife in comparison (like that konosuke hd you have I'm sure would exemplify, if I'm remembering correctly about that video). I just wonder if we are ever going to get a little bit more from the pocket knife manufacturers in this regard, or there's just too many other factors or obstacles in the way.

@@Alumapro23 thinking about it some more, comparing the regular version of that dividend to the m390 version might be a good example. That hollow grind makes it quite a different knife. In that case i guess maybe that original grind would require more grinding cost for the manufacturer to grind with the more wear resistant version so they don't do it? I don't know. To me it is really a toss up to even use the m390 version vs the original, probably prefer the origional more.

@@tacticalcenter8658 Can’t disagree, but that goes into a whole different area I don’t understand. Discussing it with knife buddies, I think it just boils down to 2 different generations of knife people. The newer generation is chasing the “perfect” knife and are willing to allow a knife made in batches, without customer input, on a computerized machine, to be called a custom. I will never in a million years be able to see that POV. I come from the time where you told a maker what YOU wanted, THEY bled and sweat over the steel/titanium, and at the end you had a knife made for you by a human, which gave the knife soul.
