This year someone rear ended me and my car had a minor bumper damage and damage on the trunk handle (where the camera is) it was fixed but the handle piece is in back order so they just put it back together (it's working fine for now).

Yes 7500 Km services is what the book specifies not the 10K Jim mentions . In fact Hyundai specify much shorter than 7500km services for "sever conditions" such as short trips . I had the non-turbo veloster for a while and if you've grown up with nothing but the cheapest, most boring economy cars in your family, then it actually feels somewhat fast and fun to drive. I also really liked the size of it, with the rear seats down you can easily fit one or two full suspension MTBs without taking any wheels off, so it was convenient for a quick biking trip. Little issues I had was that the cruise control just randomly stopped working, the black trim around the edges of the door started peeling off, the high beams just wouldn't turn on sometimes even with multiple presses... And finally, the engine started to make some worrying sounds so I sold it off and got a GR yaris to replace it.

All up a reasonably accurate and kind review. 2012-2013 Veloster turbo engines are rubbish, Most have been replaced with later model engines. The 2013 - 2014 Automatic Transmissions are bullet proof. The later 2015 on DCT transmissions are a problem. The back seat is only good for a dog or kids. The head lights are fine if re-aimed, (There max height setting is too low.) The media system is a bit crap, The sat nav is so crap you are better off with google on your phone. Other than that the car is fine.

I own a 2016 R-Spec Turbo (USA), and it's one of the better cars I've ever owned. Most of your criticisms are unwarranted. You really didn't mention the performance at all. 0-60 in less than 7 seconds, and top speed probably over 130 mph; not too many years ago that would have been Ferrari territory! Mine's the 6 speed manual. The styling may be a bit polarizing, but it's like nothing else, and I love it. It's practical (I love hatchbacks), and it's reasonably fuel efficient. The engine is very flexible, pulling hard from low rpm's. It's a completely enjoyable car to own and drive. Bizarrely, I traded in a Corvette to buy this car, and I do not regret doing so!

I own a 2012 N/A Veloster and it's just been problem after problem after problem. The engine is burning so much oil right now, and Hyundai is refusing warranty replacement even though they've been sued over this issue and agreed to a recall and extended warranty, which the car is still under. It's likely going to die before 150k. No idea what Jim is saying about the Gamma engines being more reliable, they have equally high failure rates for nearly identical problems. I still absolutely adore this car and I want to do whatever I can to keep it. It's so much fun in the corners. Never understeers, even with completely bald tires. The thing grips unlike any other FWD car I've ever driven. I will say you missed out, the cloth seats are MUCH better quality than the leather seats (Don't like leather, but Hyundai's is exceptionally bad) and have some interesting design choices on them. As for the "Average speakers", did you actually turn on the subwoofer in the settings menu? It's defaulted to off and must be manually turned on. Without it on, I agree, completely average sounding, but with it on, it's exceptionally good for a car of this price range and base trim level. Every other trim level besides base includes an upgraded speaker system as well. You're right on the rubber coupler for the steering wheel clicking, but it's not hard to replace at all. Multiple videos on KZbin and even me, with a tool set that fits in my trunk, could get it out and replace it in a single day. Hardest part is that 14mm bolt that mounts the steering column, heavier set people will NOT be able to reach it. My 2006 Elantra never had any serious problems and got to 200k easily with basic maintenance. A lot changed in Hyundai's build quality from 2006 to 2012.

Base model Velosters in both generations used a 6 speed automatic transmission (not a DCT) in the non-performance trims. So if you're not looking for performance and you need an automatic transmission, they're okay. However, if you want the turbo or the N, get the manual. You get better reliability, and you have more fun.

2014 R-Spec 110,000 miles. Second owner (bought at 36k miles in 2016). I’m pretty sure first owner never changed the oil-turbo blew after only 2k miles, but was under the Hyundai warranty and they were great about it. Spent a while chasing issues before I just bought the rebuild gasket kit (from Hyundai, $160 USD) and did a rebuild myself. I’d never done more than swap a headlight before, but the engine is so simple I managed it in the driveway. Not a single problem since. If you change the oil every recommended interval, they are rock solid. If you don’t, they’ll grenade through the bottom of the pan. Luckily, engines for these are cheap as chips, so you can replace it and the sweat and tears of doing so will teach you not to skip oil changes. Say it with me: “Oil is cheaper than engines.”

Geez.......I must have been lucky - I bought a new turbo model in 2014 - 5 (maybe 7 can't remember) year warranty - (5 year fixed price servicing) which was ridiculously cheap. Owned for 5 years - never had a single problem - not one thing. I always recommend them based on my experience. Loved driving it and the styling was fantastic - so practical - coupe, or 3 door or hatch. Mostly there was only 1 or 2 people in car but the rear door was very convenient when extra passengers. I purchased a washing machine and rather than muck around with delivery the store helped me put it in the hatch (seats folded down) and drove the 5km home - I used to tell people it was a sports Ute!

Yeah I've been really lucky with mine. 2014 bought in 17, had it ever since. Pushing the 200k km mark with one wheel bearing changed and about to swap out the climate control panel because the switch for the dial melted. And aside from two not at faults in two years, it's a phenomenal little car.

I picked up a 2013 veloster base had it for about it about 6 months so far. Seems like i got a decent one. I got the manual. inside is pretty clean some paint wearing on the handles like he said. The radio screen does act up occasionally. It seems if i skip songs too quickly it sometimes disconnects from my phone. There's been one time where it didn't make it past the boot screen and just said veloster on the radio until i restarted it. No leaks on mine that I've noticed. Around the valve cover looks clean. No suspicious stains when I park. I really like the car myself i kinda disagree with his opinion on the seats tho. They're obviously not like a racing seat but they feel more secure than other bucket seats I've been in in my opinion. Mine had 97k miles when i bought it and ive got it up to 106k so far and no issues at all yet. Ive been doing oil changes every 5k miles. Had it on a dyno a couple weeks ago. 100 horsepower to the wheels no hiccups during the testing. I have noticed that it seems to use up brake fluid very slowly but noticably. Ive had to buy one bottle during this last 6 months to top it off twice. First time it was about half empty and was when i first got it and the other was right before it was on the dyno and i was checking fluid levels. Was a tiny bit lower than when i originally filled it up. Im gonna be attempting to turbo it with the help of a local shop among other mods i hope to do so if anyone has some advice on adding power to these and what to expect from a 2013 base model then please lmk. Main things im gonna be focusing on mod wise is Suspension I heard their rear ends benefit greatly from a rear sway bar Brakes This is more of a comfort mod for myself id like to know i can stop quickly Engine This and the transmission are what im most concerned about. Idk what kind of differences there are between the 1.6 GDI and the 1.6 turbo GDI. Is it the same engine without a turbo? Do they run the same cylinder head? Bottom end differences? Trans depending on what it can handle and how much power is added

The biggest put of for my is the doors. Either have 2 door or 4 door (not 2 on one side and 1on the other. The colour, style and looks are its biggest selling point.

It's a baby sports hatch. Plenty of mod potential... but unreliable sadly. I still would love to own a gen 1 Veloster & mod the engine to make it more reliable with better quality parts.

I personally think I'd look at the KIA Pro'ceed GT over the Veloster as it just has that X factor to it. When you were describing the glasshouse in the bad I was expecting you to compare it to an MRI machine not the old school salon hair-dryer lol 😂. You definitely managed to nail the art critic wankery in the safety features overview and it gave me a good chuckle. Brilliant job guys and as always have a good weekend and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍

I own a 2016 Veloster turbo , it’s good on gas and it’s been reliable with no major repairs but it’s clunky . I have the automatic and the DCT is annoying to drive around town if you have a lot of stop lights and stop signs . The way it shifts is honestly the worst part of this car . Do yourself a favor and buy a Toyota .

At the time (early-2010's) the interiors on this generation of Hyundai product were a huge step up. But they really haven't aged that well - not like a Mk6 Golf or a Mk3 Ford Focus. Too much matt plastic, and odd design choices. Like the steering wheel, awful. Why put buttons on the lower spoke like that.

Great review! Was curious about these before I bought my Kia Proceed. Wondering your thoughts between the two? I drove a non turbo Veloster and to me was a completely different car despite is sharing a lot of components.
@aimanrahman8078 Жыл бұрын
They have different rear suspensions. The proceed has multi-link, and the Veloster has a torsion beam. Might affect handling.
@partyatmyfuneral1 Жыл бұрын
Only issue now is that because the proceed’s have the same engine, they are at risk of failing.
@Asymmetry0 Жыл бұрын
@youngparty Proceed has second gen G4FJ engine. Which appears in 2nd gen Veloster, not this generation shown which has documented issues. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Gamma_engine

@@Asymmetry0 I should be specifying, the JD Pro_Ceed GT would have the corresponding engine to the same year Veloster and was realised from 2013 onwards.

I never realised that they had an asymmetrical number of doors... I'm a big fan of non-performance cars, looking fast and cool. This one looks like a mix between cool and peculiar, but still. It's not really in the interest of most companies to sell cars that look particularly fast and cool, though, if they sell actually fast cars. With time, cars are slowly becoming cooler and tougher looking though. They went through a safety period of looking really shit, but slowly it's changing (intentionally very gradually I'd say). I don't think visibility out the back window was mentioned.

19:50 "They can get a lot of coke on the valves. Sniff." Fu&king funny as. You gotta pay attention. Do not buy Hyundais, Protons, Kias, in fact buying anything other than a Toyota, Mazda or Honda shows that your IQ is smaller than your shoe size.

The Veloster steering wheel controls are placed perfectly and require zero alterations. One of the best on wheel controls I've used. The boot has heaps of storage too when the seats are down too. Its not quick but fast enough to get the job done and just in general a super fun car to drive with plenty of the features that are in more expensive cars. 100% recommend if you can find one with a good service history.

I absolutely adore the Veloster except the name of sounds like m*lester and I can never unheard that. I owned a Proceed GT years ago , one of the best cars I've ever owned for a 1.6 turbo petrol with 204 BHP it was phenomenal and looked great, carbon cleaning is essential for these unfortunately though..

I have a 2016 standard version Veloster with 55k miles (88,000km) never had an mechanical problem with this car. I don't drive a lot in the city just back and forth from work but I had driven this car from Florida to North Caroline twice, from Orlando to Miami so many times that I lost count. It drives very well on the road and its very good in gas.
