This video talks about buying a used EV and how it is possible to 'hack' the state of health (SOH) to make the vehicle look better than it actually is. Independent workshops as well as Nissan dealerships need this capability when replacing batteries. Do not do this, this is for information ONLY.

Hi Grumpy, what diagnostics system are you using and what is the cost? I need to read my regenerative brake system as its not working, but my mates snapon Zeus would read that module :-(

I might be wrong but I believe you can check the batteries using an ODB Wi fi or Bluetooth transmitter (available on line) and use the leaf spy app which shows the health of each cell and gives an overall health rating as a percentage. I don't think this can be reset as its talking directly to the battery pack not via the on board computer. so if serious about checking the batteries before you buy this is a way to do it. If the seller objects then it may be worth walking away.

Are the read outs from an OBD 2 purely reading the cars computer or is it actually checking the real state of the battery. Bearing in mind the possibility of a BSM reset ie the memory or history data may have been compromised.

selmaz67 you are always reading the data from the BMS, however the BMS is constantly checking the battery to determine health.

As soon as I start running after resetting, SOH returns to its original number, but I wonder if there is any countermeasure

Very interesting! I have been seeing some used 2011/12 leafs lately with 10 bar battery life spans.. seems a bit off when the car has 120K miles on it.. But I guess maybe these cars could have had their packs replaced by the dealer. But I dont see that mentioned in the carfax reports..

Thanks so much for this video. I took my Nissan leaf to a Mechanic and they told me that they replaced my controller for the car to get better regen and charged me $2300.00 for the service but I think all they did was reset my controller can I verify this by Leaf Spy Pro?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the EV world but wanted to make sure I understand all this info. I'm interested in a 2017 Leaf SV and it has about 39,000 miles and the charge shows 86% with 82 miles to go with 12 bars. Does this mean this car could have been reset or even if the battery is reset how long does it take to show the true bars? Thanks.

It looks like the DS tool has the following functionality on the traction battery: 1) Battery replacement function - within the IPDM (intelligent Power Distribution Module) 2) Erase charging data of the HV battery 3) Erase battery data of the capacity loss 4) Clear HV battery junction box data 5) Inspection of the cell voltage loss 6) view the charge history of the HV battery

Ken O'Connell the purpose of the function is to be run after a new battery is fitted. Doing this on a old battery won’t unlock any more energy unfortunately. However if you battery was dismantled and then re-balanced manually and then it was performed to make regain some useable energy.

The tool simply replicates the OE tool (Nissan Consult). It resets the capacity data stored in the BMS and dashboard. It doesn’t reset the range reading, only the number of bars. If this was done on a old battery, after a few charges it would begin to drop

@@boisnae7760 they either won’t have the tool, or they will have no idea the function exists (or most likely both) The function isn’t a cheat, it’s used for when the battery is replaced. Use the range when fully charged as a guide. If it said 60 miles and had 12 bars then it’s either been driven very hard on the last ‘tank’, or the health is down. 👍🏻

Yes, it completed and reset the bars to 12. I tried this on a 8 bar car which was a 2012 LEAF

I have a Nissan Leaf with 2 bars missing... my understanding is... when you battery health reaches a set percentage you loose a bar... so if it was reset ... wouldn’t just using the car make it remap the battery pack back too it’s original 2 missing bars?

fran ackerman no, if the car has lost 2 bars it means that the battery has physically lost the capacity to hold electricity. Nothing can change that other than replacing the low capacity cells

@fran ackerman, indeed, if you reset the battery SOH with such a tool, just cycling the battery a couple of times will again display the proper SOH, so it's not a permanent way to "fool" a buyer. GYG, you didn't quite get the question because it was phrase kind of strange.

I have change about 7 cells /modules in my leaf and its not balancing my battery. So at a full charge the battery show 100% 140 miles but actually I do get 43 miles. Can you me clear the old software to solve this problems?

Unfortunately the BMS can only balance cells which are close in voltage. If they are to far apart, you will have to remove them and balance them manually. Vehicle software probably won’t help in this situation

3D Motor Maker this is using version 2018 but it’s updated now to 2019. Buying used is always risky as many of them are Chinese fakes. Some even say they are 2017 / 2018 but they’re not. As always with everything buyer takes the risk. Thanks

Péter Horváth yes it can be detected. If you looked at “number of L1/L2 charges” in live data I would imagine that this value would reset when you reset the battery. I can confirm though as I haven’t yet had a car to test it on.

Nothing, you will change the SOH bars on the dash, but the range will stay the same. Very quickly the bars will go back to where they were originally.

Hi Jon It depends on how much has been reset. If a complete reset has taken place then the ‘how many charges’ data will say zero. If it’s just the battery data I’d have to check

I know a guy who charged his 2012 to 80% all the time, still had 12 bars (nearly all or all capacity) in 2018. I don't know which climate he came from, but resided in FL from 2016 to 2018. I almost bought a 2012 in 2018, which had the battery replaced a year prior. So it is possible to find a good one, if you look hard enough. If you do find one call Nissan and give them the VIN and they can tell you if the battery has been replaced with a new battery and if so it had probably been replaced with the newer lizard battery (better chemistry).

There are legitimate reasons to do this too, for example you may want to reset your BMS (like I do) to make sure it is accurate, with no intention of selling it on. I know I have just under 27 KWH remaining in Leafspy, that is a pretty good way of telling if a car has been tampered with. If it is saying 12 bars, but in leafspy at 100% has far less KWH.
