Thank you very much for your videos. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from you and I bet, English will never stop surprising me :) It was really surprising for me to read that "didn't use to" and "didn't used to" are absolutely equal in contemporary grammar. I'd like to make it clear for myself (and my students, too :D). So... some questions came to my mind. 1) Are "didn't use to" and "didn't used to" absolutely interchangeable with no differences in meaning? 2) Does "didn't use to" have the meaning that the situation now is 100% per cent different from the past? Like, does the phrase "I didn't use to have short hair" mean that I had long hair before but I have short hair now? 3) Does the phrase "It didn't used to bother me" mean that it has never bothered me and it doesn't bother me now? "didn't used to" seems to be just a short form of "I didn't get used to it (at all)"? Btw, Grammarly spellchecker still marks "didn't useD to" as a mistake... Thanks again :)

REcon366 the video is correct. There are (in modern day English) two varients: didn't use to & didn't used to. Read the other comments and i refer to contemporary grammar books which support the new form. If you have any other questions, please ask)

@PracticeEnglishwithPaul
@PracticeEnglishwithPaul 7 жыл бұрын
Heloiza Brontë, didn't use to & didn't useD to are nowadays considered to be accepted forms. If you consult any modern grammar book, you'll be told that. Check Mygrammarlab page 99. Even Michael Swan's Practical English Usage. All English learners grow up knowing just 'didn't use' to but there have been changes in English. I have even seen 'didn't useD to' in the BBC.
@karankhurana4
@karankhurana4 7 жыл бұрын
Sir, do native speakers use like that.......??
@PracticeEnglishwithPaul
@PracticeEnglishwithPaul 7 жыл бұрын
Yes my friend. Many do, It is why "Didn't useD" is mentioned in many modern grammar books as an accepted form nowadays. Many textbooks around the world won't even mention this nuance since it is such a recent development in English. It's like how natives use "was" instead of "were" in subjunctive mood (If the weather WAS nice, we could....). At one time it was considered incorrect but is so widely used that it's now an accepted form. I would love to do an experiment: i would like to go some some schools in the UK and dictate sentences with Used to and didn't use/used to and see what the results are. I am certain they would be very mixed. As for learners, stick with the original. Maybe it was my mistake to introduce such a point so soon in the video.

+Practice English with Paul Another native English speaker, Michael Swan, the author of "Practical English Usage" by OUP, gives both versions as correct, e.g. "I didn't use(d) to like opera, but now I do." Thomson and Martinet in their "A Practical English Grammar", also by OUP, give only " didn't use to" as a negative formed with "didn't". So, apparently both didn't use and didn't used are correct.

Saying you're a native speaker does not make that you are correct in this instance. In fact, one might expect a native speaker to not make mistakes when explaining such basic grammar. When making negatives or questions with "used to", the "d" that indicates the past simple is designated to the auxilliary verb only. Ergo: I used to drive a lot. I didn't use to drive a lot. Did I use to drive a lot?
