I am tempted to believe that what made the difference was : 1. Different atmospheric conditions, lower humidity and different temperature/pressure; 2. Clean air filter.....(maybe even different fuel). This test should have been done with clean air filter with both oils in a controlled dyno chamber, same temp and humidity and same fuel.

There's a clue in the service interval - for example, 12,500 miles or 12 months, _whichever happens first_ . If you drive only 3,000 miles in a 12 month period, or drive 12,500 miles in only a 4 month period, it's time to change the oil. If you make frequent short trips that don't get the engine to optimum temperature, cut the interval in half. I have a DV6 engine and there's *no way* I'm leaving it for fear of killing the turbo, if rumours are to be believed.
@xjet
@xjet 4 жыл бұрын
Lower viscosity in and of itself does not mean less lubrication. Modern oils are often 0W30 (very low viscosity) yet they provide *more* lubrication than the older 30W50 types which have a far greater viscosity. Lubricity and viscosity do not go hand in hand. I thought an informed automotive "expert" would have known that :-/
@John2751
@John2751 4 жыл бұрын
I believe what you're saying is not the case here. The old engine oil you mentioned is mineral oil and fundamentally different from a modern synthetic oil. They're comparing a new and used oil with the same molecular properties, so there's a correlation between loss of viscosity and lubrication.
@xjet
@xjet 4 жыл бұрын
@@John2751 Not correct. I've been using 15W50 synthetic motor oil for a couple of decades now. Viscosity does not equal lubricity. Film-strength is a far more important factor in lubricity and film strength is also does not have a direct correlation with viscosity. Oil is far more complex than most people are aware.

@panzerveps
@panzerveps 2 жыл бұрын

The big change in old oil vs new oil is the usable viscosity. The viscosity went down because of the non lubrication materials of water and fuel. These do not lubricate well , think what happens when you add a cup of water to the oil? But I believe the main improvement in HP and time was due to better seal in the combustion cylinders rings and thus more HP per revolution.

The other thing is tyres. It boggles my mind to see people drive on either balded tyres or no brand ones. It's literally the only part of your car that touches the road. Putting decent tyres on will drastically change the way your car holds the road. You'll get much better MPG and it'll be far far safer.
@gravemind6536
@gravemind6536 2 жыл бұрын
I agree but the MPG on tyres that grip the road better will not be better in fuel economy as there is more friction. However I have driven on cheap no name tyres on my first car and good tyres on my 2nd car and its eye opening the difference in grip is insane and anyone who drives outside of the city I recomend gets at least medium budget tyres. I think everyone should do some driving on cheap tyres and then use premium just so they understand how big the difference is.

Modern oils are engineered to perform like this and last longer
@Tom55data

@@Vikturus22 It is down to the quality of oil and expectations and the control of the oil industry. In Europe nearly everyone uses full-synthetic oil as it is much more consistent and contains less shit where as in the US there is even a believe the synthetic oil is bad. The US has this 3k rule for changing oil, of course, the US is the lobby place of the world where the corporations want you to spend more on oil and it is common belief this is required. Most modern cars actually check properties of the oil, and I have only changed oil at 10K intervals over 30 years of owning cars and keep them till 10 years old after buying 3-4 year old cars and NEVER had an engine issue with my cars. Also use an independent garage that I trust and actually does the work required only when required - and actually changes the oil.

@DashCamSerbia
@DashCamSerbia 4 жыл бұрын
No. If you don't drive much, you need to change the oil sooner. Twice a year, or once a year at least. Because if you oil just sits there, it absorbs moisture, it oxidises. If you do short runs, it is very bad for the oil. When the engine is cold, the air-fuel mixure is ritcher and it delutes the oil. Oil is getting contaminated with hydrocarbons and water. Only when engine reaches operating temperature, those impureties start to burn off and evaporate of the oil. If your engine only reaches operating temperature basically when you arrive to your destination, know that your oil is in a very bad condition, and needs to be changed a lot sooner.

Oil changes far more important on usage then actual time. Oil quality has moved on considerably in last 20 yrs. don’t bother changing every 6 months (scam). Oil won’t degrade that quick just in the sump. It’s mainly all about usage ( unless you don’t do any real miles). So highway miles engine isn’t working as hard as lots of short trips around town. At the end of the day, if you aren’t keeping the car for life, go with manufactures oil change on mileage but if you are keeping long term half the oil change interval. It’s cheap insurance overall

Given that my car does 90% motorway miles and probably 5% city and 5% rural I though keeping to the manufactures guidlines was more than good enough. If I did low mileage I would just change it ever year since it won't hit the mileage for an oil change.

Engines do fail usually because of head gasket failure. A well serviced vehicle however the engine should never fail. The clutch will burn out eventually but 5 or 6 clutche replacements is cheaper than a failed auto gear box. I have seen personally clutches last of 250k miles. City clutches obviously burn out quicker. With most cars though I agree its other things that fail and cost more than the cars worth that eventually kill it off.

I hope this video wasn't financed by the oil companies. With additives now adays (especially in synthetic oil) you can go at least 10,000 miles before changing it. Now, that is in normal driving. Also, our systems are so sealed, little or no water gets in. Those "dangerous" particles that gets into the oil are usually picked up by our oil filters. The one big problem of not changing oil every 3000 miles is that you cut into the "POOR" oil company's profits!

Honda civics from 2000 can go a very long time without an oil change as their engines are very strong so you can get like 15,000 miles between each oil change

Well BMW recommend an oil change every 20,000 miles. HGVs normally have an oil change every 100,000 miles so where do these silly 6 to 10,000 mile figures come from ?

Normally the car manufacturer specifies the service interval. Oil change intervals have increased substantially over the last few decades, due to better oils, better manufacturing of engines, better filters, probably lots of other reasons too. Intervals of less than 6000 miles/10,000km were common 20 years ago - even for BMW's.

If half the cars don't have enough oil, how many have never changed oil? Kinda makes me think this is a warning about buying used cars. Seller may show a book with regular maintenance done, but anyone can just rubber stamp that book. Many people get a oil change and then put the car up for sale. If you look at the dipstick, it looks like light tan. No mechanic is going to disassemble the engine to find the sludge. Just get a sample on the dipstick and analyze it.

Used oil always looks black, even that of a petrol engine after a short OCI. It may still look golden and honey like on the dipstick but as soon as it is drained into a container you can see its actually pitch black.

Do not understand this fuel in oil contamination story. If engine is running on long distance oil becomes hot. How it's possible that still remains in oil and not evaporate ? Vapors should then be vented via carnkcase vantilation system and burned in cylinders... Or we are talking about engine runing only on short distances and never reaching operational temperatures....

Absolute crap! Changing the oil doesn't cause more power to be noticeable in a speed run. Weather conditions, launch performance, gear changes all make big differences. If this was supposed to be scientific, you would have put the car on a dyno!

If you don't drive short runs, and drive on a highway most of the time, you can change it every 10.000 miles. But if it is a turbo engine and/or has a timing chain, I would change the oil every 5-6.000 miles. Oil and filters are cheap.
