Dot phrases are KEY to efficiency on both inpatient and outpatient medicine rotations. Efficiency means getting your work done quickly (but still accurately) so you can achieve a good work-life balance. Electronic medical records (EMRs) have features that allow you to insert a large amount of templated text quickly. This saves seconds, which add up to minutes, which eventually add up to hours! Take it from someone who used to be slow and stayed at work late on a daily basis. But I've since learned my lesson! In this video, I provide tips on what types of dot phrases would be useful to most medical students and physicians.
ABOUT ME:

wish i wouldve started making more dot phrases back when i was training. i use them in every specialty of medicine i practice. they save a huge amount of time. efficiency is key as long as it doesn't sacrifice quality of care. side note, for medical students, whatever you decide to do, i HIGHLY recommend completing more than just one residency to become a comprehensive provider. don't settle just doing one thing. too many doctors these days only choose one specialty and limit their scope of practice. in a time where we need more doctors than ever, being a swiss army knife is beyond valuable

Is there a way to find your templates on EPIC so we can copy them? Thanks for all of your videos!!

My healthcare facility uses Medical Mime. We do not have the dot phrase option. How do you create your own dot phrases without the dot phrase option?

why do you put ''mj'' for example, for the .mjdischarge? cos I need this soooo bad 😅. When I tried to do the discharge I couldn't find the shortcut to this.

😂Lmao I love how in your .ADHF you literally just deleted ARNI and changed SGLT2 inhibitor to "consider starting on discharge". I always do the same pretty much after I put in my dotphrase because you never know what insurance will cover for the patients

Yea definitely! It’s started on inpatient sometimes - depends on kidney function and BP and all that too. And you’re right - insurance can be a nightmare on the outpatient side especially.

Is there a book or tutorial on how to do this?
@MonicaJeong

Not that I know of! Most institutions have an IT department that will walk you through how to make them yourself. In Epic, it's called making a "smartphrase." I'd make tutorial videos, but our hospital doesn't have a great Epic playground (fake Epic for training).

I don't understand most of what you are showing. You did not show step by step how to create a dot phrase.Epic belongs in the trash , as do most EMHRs. No matter how much you try to shorten time spent on EMHRs , it will never happen. Do layers have electronic records?
