Thanks! That's great to hear. The sequencer is already very useable, but e.g. scrolling and zooming for entering longer sequences would super nice to have. I can imagine that's a quite complicated thing to implement.

You like the MPC one more than, digitakt of the zoom ar96. At which points?
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 7 ай бұрын
I'm not a live performer. I like to sit down and write a song with intro, chorus, verse, and all that stuff. Adding guitar and vocal tracks. Recording the piano. Taking my time to work on details. MPC is the best box to do that and once you know it, you get results quickly. I could use a DAW of course, but I often find something will distract me or annoy me (hello driver updates, malfunctioning audio interfaces, and other unexpected and unpleasant surprises) Digitakt and the likes force you to think within their confines. I see how that can be inspiring and force you to leave your comfort zone, but it also means certain things are not possible. MPC One has very few of those limitations.

how does the r20 work out for synths when I aee it mainly only has XLR mic inputs? not so many stereo channels...? super video, thanks
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 9 ай бұрын
The R20 has an important function in reminding me not to hoard too much gear: Whenever I can't record all synths needed simultaneously any more, I know I gave in to GAS too much. ;-) I've bought XLR adapter cables for my synths so I can record 4 of them max in stereo.

The most useful thing I ever bought is an Helix stomp. I use it both as 5 i/o + usb interface at home and as a pedalboard when i gig. I sold my mixer, my interface and all my pedals for 4X its price and never sounded so good. Does the R20 have midi tracks for external gear?
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 9 ай бұрын
The R20 doesn't have MIDI sync. Which is strange because it has MIDI in (over USB)

The R20 intrigues me. I'm looking for a more flexible audio interface than the FastTrack Ultra 8R I've got in the rack.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 9 ай бұрын
I like the R20 because it's very quick to come up with something on. Audio quality is very good. Just be aware it can't do 48kHz and 96kHz. That's something professional musicians might find important. The Zoom L series can do that.

Fellow Motor Synth owner here... I understand that the appetite for upgrading might be untenable when there's so many other cool toys. However, the Mk II might actually be worth it if you love the sound. For example, it has this clutch functionality that once you get it, you start to wonder why every keyboard doesn't have it and how long before all future ones do. Also, the third digital voice dramatically expands the color palette.

I saw the MK2 on Superbooth '22 and came away impressed. I'd really like to own one, but it's totally out of question for me. If the decision is "a nice vacation with my family or another nice synth" then the answer is obvious ;-)

I was a Kickstarter supporter for version I. After a long wait (not complaining - I understand that things take time) MKII was announced even before I had my MKI with no opportunity to upgrade. I would have upgraded if for no other reason than to get the vocoder. Let alone all the other cool stuff. I understand that they discovered new things along the way to developing the first MotorSynth, but shouldn’t those of us who put our faith and cash in this company have had an opportunity to pay the difference to move into a MKII? I guess that’s the risk of offering ring early support for a thing that’s still in development.
@pjforde1978
@pjforde1978 9 ай бұрын
@@retrothingyou're sadly not the first person to express this, and if the MkII was announced before you got your MkI, I appreciate how seriously pissed off you likely felt - especially if you did not have the opportunity to pay the difference. I think that they got that wrong. However, beyond that the issue is nuanced. The early bird price on IndieGogo was US$899, and today a MkII sells for $3299. What this tells me as a hardware designer is that they likely f'd themselves pretty hard to the degree that it could have sunk their small company. That $3299 tag reflects a number that is much closer to what the device should have cost on IG to come anywhere close to breaking even. Even though it's an expensive device, I would bet my dinner that it's not a cash cow. Not only is the BOM expensive and the thing is built like a tank, but I'm willing to bet that they spent a few hundred grand in R&D on a device that might sell 1500 units. A cynical person would say that GCA shouldn't use subsidized presales to fund development, but I would say that a) that's entirely the point of platforms like IG and KS which are NOT STORES and b) that I've gotten to know them over email and through watching videos and there is a 0% chance that anyone on their end had anything like nefarious intent. They are just a small team of deeply passionate and uncommonly stylish geeks that are trying to leave their mark. To that end, getting a MkI for $900 seems like maybe you got a steal, even though your brain chemicals were telling you otherwise because so many companies in this world (and this music gear space) treat us like we exist to drive their profits. Sometimes it really is just that engineers are typically very bad at estimating.

You’d be surprised of the amount of people who buy the stuff to own it and rarely use it. Not sure which is worse, that or buying the stuff to review it in the hopes of getting more stuff for free. I do feel sad when the people buy the stuff to fill a dream rather than a purpose, only to let go of the stuff when they realize the dream is still unfilled.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm not judging anyone, to me, everything that makes you happy is a good thing. Buying synths to put them on display because they represent your childhood dreams? I can totally see why people are happy with that. Reviewing synths in hope to get free gear? Well, why not. People like gear shows, if you're an entertaining person and people like to hear you talk, that's a win-win situation. ;-) (BTW, most of the synths I used on this channel I bought on eBay and sold them again later. My idea is to find old stuff that people don't talk about a lot but that could hold value in a typical modern desktop setup. So far, free gear is a rare occurence)
@pirateradioFPV
@pirateradioFPV 9 ай бұрын
@@mr_floydst There’s always that but if there’s someone in desperate need for a heart transplant and some chinese business man buys the one suitable for the operation to display it instead, you feel a bit different about it all the sudden. Not to say everyone should be able to afford a Jupiter 8 but I do believe there are people that absolutely shouldn’t. And buying a device with the hopes of what it can do for you vs. the reality of what YOU can do with it is another thing. Just buying an MPC doesn’t make you a world class boom bap producer instantly, even if the device had the capability to do that. But many people buy into that dream instead of thinking what they actually need to fill that dream.
@mr_floydst

@@pirateradioFPV Yes, I can see your point. Buying the instrument doesn't make you an artist, and a Stradivari is best left in the hands of a Paganini. But in order to become an artist, you'll need an instrument. ;-)

Hi, thanks for watching! You're right, it's gone. It has quite the functional overlap with MPC One, and while it's a really well-crafted hardware with a great firmware, it started living in my drawer after I bought the MPC. So I thought someone else is going to put this to good use ;-) I'd really like to re-visit BB now, years later. Back then, it had some shortcomings I heard they mostly fixed in the meantime.
