Hi Matt, I too was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at age 49 (also via a circuitous route). As several of my family members suffer from various autoimmune disorders, I wedged in there rather neatly (though not happily). I wish you every success with your channel - I love it and enjoy your subject matter (art historian here) - and will often go through several videos in binges. My very best wishes to you and yours and thank you for sharing your journey with us.

you are a hero for speaking this specifically and especially on your main channel. I have a deep amount of respect for you for this and doubly for your fundraiser initiative. I have IBS as well. in some shape or form -- although admittedly I have not been so recently adept with my specific medical introspection-- precursors for many other adjacent or downstreams syndromes/illnesses. I have a great amount of sympathy for your current struggles with not being able to care directly for and with your partner and I would like to give you multitudes more encouragement.. if not just for speaking about the true extents of these often clandestine and maldiagnosed illnesses, syndromes, etc. but for being so upfront with a trult frontfacing audience. much love and a million prayers

Hello Matt, I've been following your channel for a while and didn't know you had Crohn's so I hope you get better. I was diagnosed with this Crohn's disease too in August 2017 and the first three years were very difficult but after a while I got used to it and I also have a treatment that is effective (himura pen injection). Take good care of yourself.
@CharlotteIssyvoo2 ай бұрын
Matt's wife here. Matt's taking the generic, Canadian version of Humira. We were so happy about how well it was working. Then this. The doctors do say that there is no current, active Crohn's in his guts, so they think this problem is caused by old scarring or something. That gives us hope for his comfort after this is removed.
@simpleuser00012 ай бұрын
We appreciate your story. Hopefully your Humira lasts long. You'll need to keep up with blood work and eventually move to another biologic such as Skyrizi. Antibodies form to prevent those biologics from suppressing the immune system. I was on Humira for a few years until it stopped working. I just started Skyrizi and I'm already mostly in remission. You'll need treatment between those biologics to prevent overlapping them and experiencing Crohn's symptoms.
@CharlotteIssyvoo2 ай бұрын
@@simpleuser0001 Thanks for all this information. It applies to Matt too. (I'm his wife.) He's on Yuflyma, a generic, Canadian brand of biologics.
@nhy1231232 ай бұрын
@@simpleuser0001 Recently there's been a sudden influx of many very promising agents for Crohn's fortunately, beyond Skyrizi and Humira/Amgevita, we now also have Entyvio, Stelara, and even oral Rinvoq as well for induction and maintenance therapy. It may take some time more but more and more countries are also starting to subsidise them as well. We hope to finally say good bye to any long-term steroid use!

I wish you all the best to a speedy recovery. I suffer from IBS so I have a very, very small idea of what you are going through. The real reason that this video has special meaning for me is that I was a teacher (I am retired now) and watched a brilliant young lady go through almost the exact same situation as you with Crohn's disease. Over the three years I saw her lose about 30 lb's on a very small frame. She still maintained a straight A average and graduated at the top of her Gradde 12 Science class, although missing many classes due to her disease. I sat with her Mom during many inetrviews where her Mom was crying about her daughters situation and seemingly in and out emergencies. I just recently found out that this young lady has recovered (although I do not know these details) and is working in a research lab at a local university. Keep up the faith and for what it is worth I really enjoy all your videos especially the lastest ones on evolution.

I'm Matt's wife. I was incorrectly diagnosed with IBS. Turns out I'd had gallbladder disease for years, probably decades. Was rushed into the ER in a similar condition to Matt's this week. Got my gallbladder out and I've been doing a lot better since, not perfect, but *much* better. If my family hadn't been Jewish and therefore broken apart by the events of the 20thC, I'd have known that this runs in my family. Only doing my genealogy taught me that - too late. (I wrote a blog post about the whole debacle.) Before I was too disabled to work, I taught college English. I had a student a lot like the one you describe here. She lost so much weight in one semester. (Matt just lost ten pounds in seven days.) It was so sad to witness. It ended up not being Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's but I don't know what it was.

Hey Matt, I feel some kinship with you. I also have Crohn's and live in Vancouver. I've had Crohns for 13 years but it got worse in the past couple and I started getting partial blockages every couple of months. Fortunately they usually resolve themselves in about 12 hours so I've stopped going to the ER for them unless I worry about hydration. It really sucks what we have to go through with this disease but I'm glad we have help. Hope the treatment works and you can get on your feet again. The pain and the hunger can be real bummers.

Hang in there Matt! My father also has Crohn's. He is in his 50's but had to do a surgery to remove parts of his small intestine after a real bad episode in his late twenties. Then he was relatively fine for many decades until he started experiencing more severe problems again in his 50s, luckily by then similar immunorepresants as the ones you are using became available and (except for a really bad round of covid) he has been fine since then and hopefully won't face any more major issues.

Thanks for the heads up Matt. We appreciate you and your work. My sister has Crohns and it was one of the most harrowing periods of my life watching her suffer until they figured out what was going on. She is very mild compared to you, but she has bouts of having to stay in bed and near the bathroom and she has strictures to the point where they cannot get even a pediatric scope in for colonoscopy. I'm a nurse so I'm familiar with ostomies as well. I'm sorry your wife has to manage without your care. You obviously have not only a marital bond but a caregiving bond which is very special and difficult to let go of while you get well. Glad you are getting TPN to keep up your nutrition. Amazing thing. When I was sick in 1975 I was on IV liquid for two weeks. There was no TPN so I wasted down to my lowest weight. That is not my problem now!! I'm fine at 71. And my sister is 80 so you can hope for a long life! I love my chart on the denominations and find your narration fascinating.

I'm happy to share relevant experience that may be helpful to medical team. I read almost every new journal article each week after peer review . I grew up in Skokie, Illinois, and learned to be resilient. "This too shall pass" (no double entendre intended). You're extremely talented, interesting, and focused. In an acute situation, I tend to trust but verify my medical team. The chronic conditions, my adult children have required a great deal of research and keeping up-to-date Even if doctors were reading new evidence based treatments they can't use them anyway. My cousin had impaction with narrowing and they did surgery and she was on TPN and recovered fully.
