I've left home when I was a teenager, 40years after, I went back to visit my hometown, the place that have grown up, only realized I don't know no body and no body knows me. It's a mix felling that I can't even describe.

I know man. Not belonging anywhere and maybe thinking you missed out - lost a lot along the way. Missing things that never were. People who are gone forever too.
Hedy West was an American folksinger and songwriter. She belonged to the same generation of folk revivalists as Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Her most famous song "500 Miles" is one of America's most popular folk songs.
If you missed the train I'm on You will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles A hundred miles, a hundred miles, A hundred miles, a hundred miles You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles Lord, I'm one, Lord, I'm two, Lord, I'm three, Lord, I'm four Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home Away from home, away from home, Away from home, away from home Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home Not a shirt on my back Not a penny to my name Lord, I can't go back home this ole way This ole way, this ole way, This ole way, this ole way, Lord, I can't go back home this this ole way If you missed the train I'm on You will know that I am gone You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles A hundred miles, a hundred miles, A hundred miles, a hundred miles, You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
Because of the pandemic, I’m separated from my wife for 7 months now. Because both of us have to work for a living. I’m in Iceland while she’s in Shanghai. This song touches my heart and sings my emotions.

I think this song is about yearning of our youth rather our past places. I remember when I left China in 1989 when I was 10. The friends who lost I have touch. But the places are just a skip and a hop away on a plane ride. Time... that's far and fading in our memories.

I retruned to the place of my birth after 36 years. Most of the older folks Inknes have gone, nobody recognizes me, the old shophouses some still standing and most that do had lost their past glories. I visited the places I grew up as a kid walking barefooted. This song reminds me of the good old days where people were basically kind and respectful, eager to help those in needs and everybody knows almost everybody.
