As the owner of a 2016 thrust an hour I found your observations to be right on. Particularly that kickstand. You can however easily put on a quick shifter and it’s not that expensive. I found this bike makes me wanna go out on a summer evening, get some ice cream or coffee and just sit and look at the bike. It really is an exceptional machine. Thanks for the great video.

I prefer the looks of the first gen Thruxton R circa 2017- 18 with silver/brushed aluminium tank, yellow Ohlins forks and rear shocks, brushed stainless steel V&H exhaust pipes. That was a really gorgeous bike. Triumph got the looks spot on. I just felt it wasn't quite quick enough. I think 95hp at the time. The foot pegs grounded a little too easily as well. But the rest of it was lovely.

As an owner owner of a Thruxton R for seven years you did a fair review of the likes and dislikes. I have several bikes and pushing bikes with clip ons all seem to be a little harder to move in the garage...just put it on your hip and crank it. My Thruxton R is now about the same weight as the RS your riding and with a couple of small mods has about the same horsepower. These bikes are quite flexible on the gearing they can run with ease from the stock 16/42 geared all the way up to 18/37 without much loss in acceleration.

What you love about this bike , is the-same as 70's 750-Ducatis and the later-Darmah-900 . The sound , power-delivery and plantedness of the front-end etc . I'm glad to know there's a modern (somewhat-affordable ) bike that captures that experience , there's nothing-else like it and you have to experience it to understand why people love bikes like this . I have my poor-mans version, Yamaha TR1 (your German-neighbours love them ) , it's well-sorted and with a few-mods ,putting-out a bit over 70hp , riding it is such a blast and it feels way-more than 70hp . See if you can find one, I see there are 25 on the British Registry , closer to 300 in Germany . Enjoying your Vids . Dave NZ

Horsepower is basically top speed, what's more important to most riders is torque and the bikes weight and then where it makes that power. So you can have 2 bikes one with 150HP and another with 100HP, if they both weighed 400lbs and had a peak torque of 110nm at 4000rpm they would feel exactly the same to ride in terms of power, the only difference would be the 150HP bike would have a higher top speed. Most riders are never riding around day to day doing top speed runs unless they have a death wish.
@Skiamakhos

Yep, only once ever hit my old bike's top speed, going on a motorway in the very early hours. Nothing else on the road for miles & miles, thought "Let's see what it can do". I don't feel the need to ever do that again.
@douglasalexander4348
@douglasalexander4348 6 ай бұрын
The same applies to torque. When do you ever need that amount of torque coming out of a bend ? Do you always use maximum torque ? So no, torque is not the be all. If it is, buy a Harley haha. On the the other hand, buy a street triple. Less torque but it will p all over the Thruxton whilst being more agile and lighter. As they sell WAY more Street triples than Thruxtons, what’s more important to most riders can’t be torque can it ?

I've heard a few other people say the same thing about the side stand, but I've always found it so easy and flip it down without even needing to think about it. Got to agree with you on the lack of a quickshifter. The RS should really have one as standard.

reason why clip on bars feels heavier vs flat handlebars is the leverage from the roll center. When pushing around the garage the roll center is the tire contact point, also parking lot maneuvers too. But once up to speeds, highways speeds, the roll center actually gets higher up closer to the center of gravity which is closer to the top of the wheel/tire. So now the leverage is much shorter/less with clip ons compared to handlebars. I'm really digging my SpeedTwin with Ohlins from Thruxton, Tune ECU, Tec pipe, FreeSpirit belt conversion.

The bike with a decat and termignoni cans is so nice. I love squirting around at 3krpm. You can hear the hard pulsing grunt of the engine. You decide to wind out a gear and it just revs and revs and revs. You look down and you still have another 3 thousand rpm to redline! So wild. Its such a refined classic that will actually perform. The RS has shorter gearing thana speed twin and definitely benefits from putting a speed twin front sprocket on it. The bike has a mile wide torque curve; no need for close ratios.

I have a Thruxton R, here in the States. Bought it slightly used with about 2700 miles on the clock. It’s been a very enjoyable ownership experience. I came from sport bikes with a 14 year gap where I didnt have a bike at all. The power is plenty adequate, for me at least. The handling has more capability than I have talent. All that is to say, I haven’t gone out and hit the twisties and thought: I wish I had more.

I love my T120 gold line just love the engine seems to be great gearing. 1st and 2nd gear is great around town. And I barely use 6th gear as 5th gear seems to be great for passing cars/trucks. But just the look of the bike sitting there. Everytime i stop i am surrounded by older guys telling me stories of their younger days when they owned a Triumph like back in the 60's 70's. I have the Trophy SE for distance touring but find myself riding the T120 a lot more nowadays.....

I test rode one at the dealer and when I was finished I stood there like an idiot for at least a full minute trying to find it. My husband was standing there saying "it's right under your foot peg!" It didnt dissuade me from buying the bike though. 😂

You're right about power delivery usually trumping outright BHP Kate. I once rode a mate's 1000cc Yamaha Thunderace and it felt lacking for fast overtakes, even though it had 30 BHP more than my own 1000 V twin. I easily blast past traffic in top, 6th gear, from 40 MPH upwards but had to change down from top, 5th gear, to 3rd on his bike, as it felt pretty flat by comparison. It was a lot smoother at low revs though, especially as it had carbs. You're too young to remember those !
@gk73man51
@gk73man51 Жыл бұрын
The Thunderace still makes more torque than your v-twin though, it’s just taller geared. If both bikes had the same gearing the Thunderace would destroy your bike on acceleration.

Nice video… just to pick up on your final ‘dislike’ point.. the lack of tech is actually a plus for me.. I have no need of a quick shifter, autoblipper or cruise control.. it makes the riding experience pure and simple.. I actively avoid buying bikes that have too much tech.. Enjoyed your video though and totally agree with your three likes.. that road looks fun!

Totally get you! I'd like a qs/blipper just because I have bad wrists so it's helpful, but I'm never one to be bothered about cruise either, I just know it's a positive for lots of people. One thing I enjoyed ws there was a big 'I' for information button on the switch gear and it shows you a few things, not many though... that was refreshing on a loaner 😊

I wonder if there's maybe an aftermarket extension piece you could put on the side stand, maybe in rubber or suchlike, that'd just show where it is when you're looking down? Just something that'd stick out a couple of centimetres so you can see where to put your foot? If one doesn't exist I'm sure it could be fabricated.

The bike is so beautiful. I love the green one, v much. The bike has totally sensible power and looks premium everywhere. I would probably go for the comfort of the Street 765R, personally. Well, I wouldn't because I've ordered the new Hornet. If you were to give marks out of 10 what would you give the Thruxton and the RS? On a bike like that, the absence of a shifter is just weird. Thanks for you great review. You seemed to really enjoy riding this bike as compared to others I watched you ride. Would you buy one? Were the ergos hard on you after half hour to an hour? did you like riding this more than the speed twin? All I see on line is everyone saying the ride is like no other. For reference, I'm 61, reasonably good shape, 5'9" and most of my rides are an hour or 2. I'm ready to pull the trigger on one but dont want buyers remorse. Test rides not an option for more then a mile or 2. I would appreciate any help you could provide.

I demo'ed a Thrux RS and the Striple RS at one of the Triumph demo days. I currently also have a Thrux 900. So I'd say the Thrux RS is like my Thrux 900, but just more of everything. I'll probably upgrade at some point but my 900 is so modded I think I'd really miss it. The Striple RS is freaking fun, I really enjoyed the quickshifter and just how light and flickable it felt. Comparing those two is tough, as they are so different. They both are smooth as a 20 year old Scotch but I think the Thrux is more for looks (and very competent as Kate points out), and the Striple is more for track work and losing your license.

Haha my singing isn't that bad, I just match Mike's terrible vocals to make him feel better 😉

@@UsernameKate Have you considered doing bike gear reviews, especially gear made for ladies? I don't see many vids aimed at female riders. Just a thought!

Beautiful motorcycle. Way overpriced.

The Thruxton feels like 75 hp and low to medium power. The torque is low and high up the low rev limit. There is no sense of latent power , it feels like a commuter 500 until you thrash it. Its not comfortable either. Ride a comfy bike with real low grunt and I become really disappointed with my Thruxton. It is what it is , an attractive retro bike with good handling and useable performance. Its light so easy to move around when parking or leaving in a shed.
