Triumph Thruxton RS Review. The fastest, sharpest handling, Modern Classic Bonneville Motorcycle!

Күн бұрын

We review the new Triumph Thruxton RS 1200cc Bonneville motorbike. The most powerful, high torque, sharpest handling of all the Triumph Modern Classic motorcycles.
It's classic looking, it's fast, it has sharp handling - but how good is it?
Will it suit taller riders? What is the ideal rider height for this bike?
We look at the engine, gears, handling, brakes (Brembo!), suspension (adjustable Ohlins Piggyback twinshock & Showa USD Forks), Seat, Styling, modes (Rain, Road, Sport), Seat Height, Metzeler Racetec RR tyres, and more!
Just how fast is this bike? How quickly does it accelerate? Is it twitchy? Is it cool? What does the exhaust sound like?
We give you the full picture, beautifully filmed, as always! Father and son team give the unique, two generation opinion about this modern classic motorcycle.

I purchased a Standard Thruxton 1200 a few years ago, to say it is fabulous is simply not enough. 57 years of riding I have seen the evolution of bikes from the 60s to present, never has there been a bike like this.

Great unbiased revue. I bought a Thruxton RS in 2021 and coming from riding sport bikes for the last 20 years, I hated it at first. It is now growing on me. At 6ft 2" I feel a little large for the bike, but still very comfortable.

I'm 6'3" and didn't find the Thruxton cramped at all. You feel a bit over the front and the engine has great low rev torque. It wasn't the RS, but the geometry is the same. Add the optional front cowling for $1k and it becomes even more sexy. Classic Clocks...I hate modes too. Just give me TC & ABS that I can choose on/off with a simple toggle switches. Nailing it around corners is really fun, at least on my test ride I was contemplating trading right then and there. Thanks for the awesome review as always! Cheers!!!

I owned the 2017 first gen 'R' version. Its beautiful, fast and quality top notch and sounds amazing. First gen had some issues, mostly on the brakes, the initial bite was sort of off, you had to do a double push on the lever to get the breaks to go hard. Traction control also mudded the experience for me. Sold it in 2019 because the position was way too committed and my right shoulder hurt a lot due to a previous accident, plus some other personal issues. But until now, I think it is the most refined bike I ever had. That RS looks is even more powerful, wish I was 10 years younger to be able to enjoy it.

At 53 these 60's style retros seem before my time, they were the bikes my dad's generation rode. I'm nostalgic for katanas, Rickman predators, Spondon gs1000's and so on, as opposed to old Brit twins. Great video though, love your work and I hope no Rhinos were harmed for this production.

A modern performing retro indeed. Beautiful looking. I do love the long narrow tank and the strip of chrome along the middle of it. I briefly owned a Street Cup last year. Some call it a baby thruxton. Really it’s a Street twin made to look Café racer like with its set up. Clip on bars, cowl seat etc. It was tremendous fun however this thrux is a different and more serious proposition.

Except for one significant blemish, the Thruxton is functionality and aesthetically well done. The blemish is the tank’s cheap pinch-weld. Triumph hid the exposed pinch-weld in the Rocket 3 and T120 Scramblers, should have done the same for the “classic” Thruxton.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan there are some great rides but compared to rural England they are few. Most of the roads here outside the cities are either straight and very long, too short on account of there not bring many civilised areas outside the towns and cites or dirt tracks. Great review. I test rode the thruxton r when it first came out and loved it. This can only be an improvement with less weight and more power. Shame about the colour options, black is ok but a bit boring and I don't like the two tone colour scheme at all. Modes are unnecessary, I've never had a bike with them and never needed them. Just tone it down in the rain.

Do y'all think the piggyback rear shocks are that much better? And for what reason? Been thinking about a pair but don't want to spend unnecessarily. The suicide clipons always seem so,,, unforgivable if you really need steering control. My VMAX has factory less length bars, and feels like it's strictly made for straight line speed. As opposed to the CB 750 and even my bonneville T 100, where i feel more handling control. The 1200 thruxton is a good looking all around ride from what I've seen. But I think I'd rather get the bonneville 1200 or speedmaster and do some cosmetic s on it. Thanks guys.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan I thought when I got my R model that it would only be suitable for short one day trips, but I have found it so comfortable that if not for the shortage of carrying capacity I would ride it to the east coast from Perth Western Australia. Once up to speed the wind on my chest takes most of the weight off my wrists/arms, but then we do have much more open space over here in Oz.

This bike is “perfect in every way” to quote a line from Mad Max Fury Road. Not sure why Triumph charges more for that shitty grey-black-red flat paint. They should have glossed the paint, killed the red, and put a gold leaf strip between the gray and black sections with Gloss, to tie in the shocks.

I have to wonder how far you can evolve 60's retro bikes before it stops making any kind of sense. Upside down forks are cool, but steel cradle frames and double rear shocks - it just all seems so incongruous. If performance and handling were important, surely the buyer wouldn't be looking at a 60's retro?

I have the 2018 R and there is an increase in both torque and HP for the RS. Best bike I have ever owned, done three track days on it now and it is a lot of fun. I wanted to keep this bike a low mileage bike but that just hasn't happened, the other two bikes are developing a complex whilst parked. It might be the sharpest handling Triumph in the Bonneville line up but it is still slower, and heavier in technical B-road sections than a 90s muscle bike such as the Mk1 Bandit. I cant for the life of mine understand how a modern bike can have inferior handling than 30 year old bikes.

@@MrDarcy-OlMan Ofcourse I have, otherwise I would not shared my thoughts on the bikes. I even trackday:ed/raced my mk1 bandit and the Thruxton R feels heavier to push from side to side on twisty roads. Actually the older cb1000 the one with the 18" wheels felt much more nimbler than the Thruxton R with its 17" tires and clippons. Every body was raving about how modern handling the Thruxton R was but once I dug my teeth into one it felt heavy, slow to react and not at all modern handling at all.
