Hello Dave, I could have used one of your trepanning tools for a job I was looking at. There was an RFQ from our provincial power company to make generator brakes for one of their hydro dams. The parts were all 4140 HTSR and there were cylinders that were 7" OD with a 6" ID. I couldn't source 4140 in tube form so I would have had to machine from solid. They were about 6" long and there was 192 of them to make. Being able to trepan them to within 1/16" or so would have saved a ton of time. Alas, I didn't quote as there was no way I could meet their turn time. It's too bad, I could have posted an 80 hour video of your tool punching through a seemingly endless supply of blanks. Ha ha. Hope to see a new video from you soon. Ken

Question: If you must make a new trepan tool each time for a specific sized part demand, wouldn't it sometimes be quicker to just conventionally drill and bore upping your speeds and feeds accordingly, rather than expend all that time involved in creating a new trepan tool to accomplish the job? Of course you would NOT be rewarded with a nice center slug for your effort doing it conventionally....just more chips.

Hi mojo. To drill a hole from solid to make a 8" or 203mm hole takes a lot of horse power my friend. Most machines have no chance. 🤗

@@userwl2850 Can't you start with a drill large enough for your first Boring bar clearance, then move up to bigger bar(s) as your hole progresses towards finish size? An example is Staballoy AG17 which is a different material from military staballoy, and contains 20.00% manganese, 17.00% chromium, 0.30% silicon, 0.03% carbon, 0.50% nitrogen, and 0.05% molybdenum, alloyed with iron. Well, it's just gone a bit past the end of Christmas here, so I'll wish you a Happy New Year and a belated Merry Christmas! It sounds like those turning and boring operations are pretty noisy once you get three machines running. Get many more going at once and you might want earplugs. :-) I think I counted three or so lathes not in use. You mentioned one of the long-bed machines needs rebuilding. What shape are the others in? Usable but you just didn't have a use at the moment?
