Pretty amazing how many old machines are still working for a living? My big lathe,a Rollo Supreme dates from 1930s and still going strong. 8 1/2 " centre Highton with 6' between centres is pretty handy. With the gap out it can run a 24" faceplate and 8" thick. Just love running it!. Hardinge cataract is from 1904! It has a capstan and still earns its keep too. They don't make them like they used to.

That was a huge task, one that a lot would have scrapped the machine over. Still sounds a bit rough, I can't imagine what it sounded like before the repair. Something about back gears, no matter what you do, they are howlers. I ran my old Mueller on a temporary drive, using the back gear, and the local coyotes stayed far away from our place for a long time. I wonder what kind of 'message' they were hearing from it ... ... Great news on the contract David i`m pleased for you. That was some rebuild and repair of those gears and shaft,i was trying to figure out why that smaller gear was wobbling the way it was,not until you showed where the phosphor bronze bush should have been and the "penny dropped". Did you cut your own gears ? it was a good idea to form a taper of about one degree or so, instead of pressing you could have heated the outer ring ,just a thought, that machine certainly has a very large spindle bore, and those gears are really massive ,did you drain the gear box oil? i was thinking about all the worn metal that was present ,you certainly smartened up the externals ie paint ect,i know it does not effect the machines performance but cosmetically it looks great i commend you you have a busy time ahead ,be safe and thank you for sharing ,Ron ,from Cwll,UK.
