Can someone go grab a couple undergrads to seed into these question groups? I swear, the bar has been set extremely low here. I've watched every one of these for weeks. This is pathetic. Not a single person from any media outlet and asking questions has spent 15 minutes researching volcanism. The most intellectual question has been 'do you think this parallels the 1924 eruption?' That was several weeks ago. Com'on people! They've stated that there was potential for a major steam explosion event like 1924 back when the lava lake first subsided. Then a few days later this guy showed up and said they were revising the whole steam event hypothesis. Here he said it was a steam explosion. What's that all about. He's also mentioned that they felt Kilauea should be reclassified as an explosive volcano. So the intelligent questions would be, what other parallel events and volcanos is USGS drawing parallels to at this point, or how does the current influx of data help you to revise your understanding of Kilauea? I swear there are more than a few imbeciles at these things acting like a scientist is a weather man there to predict the future. Science is observation and recording of information. By asking a scientist about anything unrelated to observations and recorded information proves your a total idiot. Ask him/them about the SCIENTIFIC facts that allow the rest of us to draw our own conclusions about the future implications. Quit trying to show off a 2 digit IQ. If this is the best these reporters can do, get some new people. This is just pathetic and pointless both for this guy's time and for those of us in the intellectual minority. -Jake

Someone intelligent might ask: Why everyone is questioning the activities at the Geothermal plant , spicifically Fracking type activities that would actually and "Unusually" open up space for the Lava/Magma to "unnaturally" go in such abundance!?
@UpcycleElectronics6 жыл бұрын
jBird I think that's a bit speculative especially given the potential implications and backlash. I doubt they'd touch that with a 10 meter stick. The better line of questions, in my opinion would be to ask for their distribution of sensors, manpower, and resources. Specifically determining where they distribute and redistribute resources would imply their level of importance and open them up to questions about these changes. I want to know about the real science. You know these people from USGS are just trying to do their duty for the media while not creating mass panic or creating a political issue. First someone needs keep in mind the last two points. Then ask questions that reveal what the scientists are physically taking action on. Once they reveal an action has been taken use that to draw out a reason for the actions. ...how many people are on the ground? Has that/is that going to change?...How have sensors/monitoring systems been changed? Is there more help/labor on the way? ...Or go full blown, these guys are 'scientific foreign English language geeks...so...how has recent activity influenced your past research? Do you plan to write/publish any of your recent findings?...How do you feel the academic community will react to the findings and data coming from this event in coming years? There are a million questions and lines of reasoning that could reveal anything you want to know. Don't ask about predictions for the future. Don't ask about tourism. Don't ask for them to say the same stupid stuff over and over. We all know you feel guilty for not having an intelligent question. Adopt a new motto: 'better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.' -Jake

So, if the slumping rims of the crater were to collapse entirely into the crater, and really fill it in with hundreds of feet of rubble, will that mean that the next steam explosion will build up to much greater pressures before blowing that rubble out of the way? Like potentially a much more massive, damaging phreatic explosion?
@skrame016 жыл бұрын

@fatherthomas15756 жыл бұрын
it's called the mouth of the volcano for a reason , it eats fissure 8 poops😂
@richardgoldman87616 жыл бұрын
The conduit is only so big, the amount of rubble doesn’t dictate the size of the explosion. The quality of seal (how well the conduit is plugged, how airtight) and the amount of water flashing to steam are factors. One would not expect the water table to ‘all of a sudden’ supply a greater amount of water (which would create more steam), probably just the same steady stream.
@wiretamer57106 жыл бұрын
maybe... nothing is certain. The rubble is very loose and its density is all over the place, or could allow a significant amount of the gas to escape without incident. the may be underground faults that defeat the plug's integrity, or the gas may go elsewhere in the system.

This was provided by usgs. It might explain the “missing “earthquakes. It is from their Facebook page. We think this results from an unfortunate misunderstanding. The sheer number of earthquakes at Kilauea's summit is overwhelming to the computer systems. This has resulted in several earthquakes being mislocated by the automatic location software (the earthquakes are coming so quickly at times that the computer cannot tell them apart, and different earthquakes are being picked as the same, which gives locations that are incorrect). Some of the earthquakes also have very odd energy patterns, with lots of long-period shaking that gives the earthquake a smeared appearance and makes it hard to pick an onset time (which is critical for location work). Earthquakes are manually checked, and analysts found many (in the well over 10,000 that have occurred at the summit in the past few weeks) that were either located in the wrong place or that did not actually exist (that the computer "created" to explain patterns of seismic energy recorded in various places). When analysts then relocate the earthquakes to their proper place, the original event is removed form the catalog. We're sorry for this confusion. Quite simply, the unprecedented level of seismicity at Kilauea's summit is wreaking havoc on the automatic location algorithms. This is why having a well-trained group of analysts who review earthquake locations is so important.

Yeah that poor guy has one of the ones that no longer has a home or a bed or a sheet to throw on it. I thought his presentation was clear and very understandable. I truly appreciate everything these people are doing. I was saddened to see comment or say oh these are all rich people and they've got insurance that will replace everything. That is not entirely true a few of the homes that were destroyed in vacationland where timeshare and Rental condos. A lot of the people that have been left without land or home we're not wealthy. Now on top of losing everything, they are being told by the crooked insurance companies that they weren't covered for lava or they weren't covered for earthquakes. The majority of these people will have no monetary restitution whatsoever they are just left homeless. A lot of them lost homes that had been in their families for Generations. No they're not wealthy people and no the insurance found a loophole once again to make sure that even though people paid for their protection they don't have to deliver it. This might be the perfect time to call for some insurance reform.

For the sake of many who are only now interested in what the volcano is doing daily: many of the tourists who visit here say, "It feels like being in a foreign land". Guess what? Being here is as much being in a foreign land as visiting Japan or France. Hawaii has it's own language, which is used by many of the locals. Hawaii also has its own local culture, and celebrations. We learned a long time ago, that light weight, loose clothing is more comfortable than wearing a suit and tie, or form fitting dress. We ladies do wear a lot of dresses here, but they fit that description of loose, not form fitting. Please, if you don't live here, and feel every place here should feel the same as visiting another state on the mainland, stop and consider we are not there, nor do we want to be. We love everything about being in, and part of, Hawaii.

Yeah. I supposed they don't really know, so wont venture a public guess. But does Hale'mau'mau crater reactivate and return to being the center of the Kilauea eruption at some point, or does the current active fissure become the focal point for the foreseeable future? What could change things back to the original state, where the magma is erupting closer to the summit and not so far downrift? Lava tube collapse? Earthquake? You can see a bunch of craters and cones on the east of the rift, which makes me assume this has happened a lot in the geologic past, and generally comes to an end at some point, otherwise that side of the island would be built up higher like Kilauea summit.

@jimhofoss99826 жыл бұрын
Graham Ward The crater gets larger with each explosion....greater volumes of material sloughs in....more weight induced over the vent....more pressure required to clear its throat....bigger explosive eruptions to come? Or will it plug itself off, and not be able to build enough pressure to vent from the crater? And if this happens, will the increased pressure reflect on fissure 8? It is growing in height.....when do you cease to call it a fissure? And call it a new volcanic cone? Amazing forces on display courtesy of Mother Nature. Hope everyone there stays safe, and gives this event the respect and caution it deserves. These eruptions has been measured and fairly predictable since the flows have hit the ocean.....no saying that it will continue in this manner. USGS has done a great job, but we, as humans, know little about volcanos, or predicting outcomes. We can only respond, not mitigate. We only dwell on this beautiful planet, we cannot control it. Living with our environment is the best solution we can muster, greater forces than mankind are playing out. Makes one feel rather small and humble, knowing that we are not in a controllable situation. cheers from canada.

Is there something in the water at the USGS? This guy is at least the fourth or fifth geologist I've heard repeatedly mispronounce the word "subsidence" in the past month. The most irritating part is that he says "subsides" correctly in the same fucking sentence as he says "subsidence" incorrectly, at least twice in this video alone. That's the equivalent of a nuclear physicist saying "nuculer" instead of "nuclear".

Why can't these usgs say that Kilauea volcano is heating up. How hard is it to measure heat.
@chrishartley45536 жыл бұрын
Volcanos don't get hotter before they erupt. Rock is a good insulator. Its much better to register earthquakes and measure surface deformation as magma rises.
@MegaTriumph16 жыл бұрын
All volcano's show a heating up period before an eruption. That's why the walls are caving in around Kilauea. Because the ground temps are increasing the moisture that once was in the ground is now gone.

I thought the crater was collapsing because the lava lake underneath is being emptied out at #8
@chrishartley45536 жыл бұрын
MegaTriumph1: You are right of course. For some reason I was thinking you were talking about a general heating of the cone. Gas from crator(s) and fumerols and any hotsprings will show signs of heating. or anywhere heat escapes. Satellites can detect this as well. .... And boreholes would probably pick this up as well. Sorry again. For some reasin i had this image of a whole volcano gently simmering away underfoot.
