I use both the app and the website; oddly they’re set up SO differently that you can occasionally find loads that are on one but not the other.. The app, on the road, produces an eBOL (electronic bill of lading) that it asks you to fill out upon pickup and collect a signature for delivery. You can bypass it though if for some reason the person is not present at the pickup or delivery. So really the bol is for you and your own records should there be a problem

I think Rhode Island is a great place to be able to find a lot of loads.. i95 is full of things! Motorocycles, 4 wheelers and furniture seem to be my best moneymakers. You can definitely cancel loads if something comes up - but the whole system works a lot like eBay, so hopefully the person is understanding. Pretty much everything is based on your rating and reviews. So starting off is a little slow because people will see youve never taken anything on this app before and have no rating. But once you get a few under your belt its really easy to fill that trailer.

It’s a 2012 Ford F-250 Crew Cab with the 6.2L gas engine. I went with gas because I have a basic understanding of maintenance and fixing easy things on gas engines and I’ve never worked on diesels, plus cheaper parts and all that. Plus since Ford upped the displacement to 6.2 and a 6 speed in 2011 it’s now got plenty of tugging power and stays in 6th gear most of the time which means I average about 10.5mpg! It just made sense.

@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
I do have an MC number and DOT.. BUT, no one at any point has ever asked for them; there’s a place deep in your uship profile to enter in the MC number, and it makes you eligible for these special category where people can hire you without the bidding process, but that makes up like 0.05% of the listings. And you also don’t NEED to be an LLC, you can do taxes as a sole proprietor ’doing business as’ your screen name, so you won’t need an ein, either! Technically you can just start up by registering with uship. I think the MC number covers some fairly confusing laws about shipping goods across borders for money, so you should probably have one. And insurance, although insurance is also offered through the app to the customer.

I DO have a DOT and MC number, but Im not 100% sure you need to do that; Ive never been asked for them anywhere. You can get a policy through your normal car insurance that covers the contents inside a trailer youre pulling. And also Uship offers cargo insurance to the person who is booking with you, you CAN ask that they get it through that. Or, of course, you can do everything by the book and get commercial insurance and everything, and then its probably a lot harder to make very much money, unfortunately. But probably the right thing to do...

I was wondering this same question. I am a traveling salesman (run the business thru my home as an LLC taxed as s corp). but my vehicle I use to travel in my personal vehicle so I insure it personally (as I use it for both personal use and business). my instinct says just to run the transportation business as a sole proprietor. just make sure the cargo is insured (and I will be carrying small loads since I am a small truck with a shell). but being an LLC does give you more legal protection. but, as long as you have cargo insurance, I am not sure why you need to LLC. being an LLC and filing taxes as S corp can reduce your self employment taxes. if you are a full time transporter (hot shot trucker) transporting millions of dollars worth of products a year, I would definetly set myself up as an LLC. it is just one additional level of protection if a load goes horribly wrong and you get sued. I was hoping if I use uship, then they have to get sued and not me. but my guess is uship has all these disclaimers when you sign up that says you are 100 percent responsible for anything that goes wrong and we will not be liable in any way, shape or form.
@jaslay3boys
@jaslay3boys 3 жыл бұрын
What you are doing is NOT LEGAL. In order to cross state lines with cargo for hire a MC number is required. It does not mater how small the load is or how cheap you do it. If you have an accident carrying something for hire you are a commercial carrier and the insurance company can deny the claim. Will you get caught? Not very likely. However the fines from the DOT are very high and can include the confiscation of the truck and trailer as well as the impounding of the loads. If you think it is legal, pull into a weigh station and ask the DOT cop to tell on camera that it is legal. Then show a letter from your insurance company that states you are covered when you are "For Hire".
@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE
@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jo! You sound upset. The specific rules for carrying other peoples stuff across state lines actually changes a bit depending on the state. I do, indeed, have an MC number as well as a DOT number. Uship provides insurance for the cargo. But people who plan to do this for a living should absolutely look into all of the laws involved. If using Uship is not legal, It’s a miracle they’ve been around as long as they have!
@jaslay3boys
@jaslay3boys 3 жыл бұрын
Upset no. Trying to set the record straight YES. I found this is less then 5 minutes. The 2 issues that trouble me with this site called UShip are: 1.)Your article indicates that UShip has "brokered" more than $1 million in shipments since launching the company in March 2004. The web site states within their User Agreement that they are not a Broker. So what are they actually? 2.) The other thing that troubles me is that most consumers aren't aware of the fact that most pickup trucks pulling trailers and that transport goods in a “For Hire” capacity across state lines fall under the same laws as semi’s! Then you have to take into consideration that that is compounded by the fact that the consumer doesn't know how to check carriers out through the use of the government website run by the Federal Motor Carrier safety Administration www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ It's imperative to ensure that who ever they choose as a carrier is properly licensed and commercially insured. Using a Carrier without the Federally mandated credentials when they are transporting “For Hire” will leave you with no recourse if something goes wrong. It is classified as a Civil matter in the eyes of the law. So the bottom line is that the site is OK as long as you do your homework on the Carriers. The site doesn't check them out to make sure that they are legally transporting according to the site’s User Agreement. To make matters worse, Uship does NOT provide you specific guidance on how to go about doing your research that they charge you with the responsibility of doing. So to expand on some important issues on behalf of the Consumer, I’ve spelled out what I feel should assist you if you use the site called Uship. When transporting “within” state lines in a “For Hire” capacity, each state has their own laws. Each state level DOT site can be found at: www.fhwa.dot.gov/webstate.htm If you are unable to navigate your respective state’s DOT link, then call your state for assistance. If you have your property being transported across state lines then you have to use the Federal site to verify that the Carrier is legally transporting. To guide you, use: www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ Verify your bidding Carrier’s MC & DOT #’s using the guidance below. If the Carriers have nothing listed in their profile, ask them for it within the Q&A section of your listing. It’s permissible by site rules to ask them for it. See the user agreement. www.uship.com/user_agreement.aspx 1.) This link will take you to the Company Snapshot safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx You enter the Carrier’s DOT or MC number and then you will see a screen that shows what commodities that the Carrier can legally transport and whether they have Intrastate or Interstate authority. After you review this page then click on the Licensing and Insurance in the upper right hand corner of the page. 2.) Select REPORT a) Verify type of Authority Common = for hire to the general public and are required By Law to carry Cargo Ins Contract = Carrier transports for a dedicated company(s) and is required to have Liability but NOT Cargo Ins Note: There are some Contract Carriers that DO carry Cargo Ins and therefore they are safe to use by the public. Just check that Cargo Ins IS on file Broker = self explanatory b) Verify Insurance requirements The liability will normally show $750,000 The Cargo Ins will be shown as $5000, even though the Carrier most likely has more, if they have any at all. Notes: -You simply have the Carrier’s Ins Agent FAX you a copy of the policy after you have accepted a Carrier's bid. -The DOT number is really no more than a tracking/audit number. It’s the MC number that is needed in order to be legal when transporting "For Hire" across state lines. - Closely examine all information to ensure that all infomation on the governemnt's web site and that of the carrier's profile match. -Lastly, don’t be surprised at the results when checking out the carriers on Uship. Since the site doesn't verify their licensure etc.. and the general public doesn't know how, they register at free will. I think you need to explain the whole process before you promote UShip. If you did you would soon find out if you follow the laws you can not move freight at the rates you see on UShip. And yes I haul freight for a living and I spend thousands of dollars per year for insurance to run legally. The Federal government requires a minimum of $750,000 insurance. Call your insurance agent and get a quote for the REQUIRED INSURANCE and you will not move freight for pennies on the mile across state lines. But you go right ahead and do what you want. Call your insurance agent, file the proper paper work and drive safely. Also do not forget to display the lawful signage on your truck. That includes the company Name MC # DOT# and phone #. As another example there are several states where some people legally sell marijuana. Go to one of those states and sell dope out of the truck of your car. This amounts to the same thing you are advocating when you use UShip. There are legal and non-legal ways to do a lot of things. As long as you do not get caught you are alright.

@@jaslay3boys I imagine people start out looking at major carriers and are then driven to a place like Uship when they see how much it costs to move a bunch of motorcycles across the country. I agree they’re not adequately ‘warned’ in the school of ‘ya get what ya pay for’ but that’s I suppose a lesson people learn throughout their life. I personally operate legally, and pass up on loads that don’t pay enough to cover the cost. I also don’t really use Uship as any sort of main source of income, just supplementing the gas on trips I’m going on anyway. I think I mentioned that several times in this video. The people who have stuff moved through the app simply wouldn’t have it moved at all without the app existing. I think we’re in two entirely different markets. There’s nothing that connects grandma marge with an over the road trucker to get her wicker chairs down to Atlanta from Minnesota. Anyway, you make really good points, things people should generally know before venturing into this world as a source of income. Maybe I’ll make a video about the realities of being legal

If the gross weight is < 26,001 then you need a dot number if running commercially, but you dont need a CDL. You only need a CDL if the gross wt is over 26,001 lbs. This information was given to me directly from an FMCSA person. I have worked for several couriers using a car or cargo van across state lines and have never had a problem. Running a semi is a different story, and most people either sign on to a carrier and use their authority or they are an actual employee of the carrier company.

how do you get a DOT and MC#? how much does it cost and do you have to pay a renewal fee every year? do you just get them in the state you reside and they will be valid in all other states? I hope it isn't much as I only plan to do this on the side (I am a traveling salesman who travels in a small truck with a shell). my truck bed is pretty much empty whenever I go on the road to buy/sell products.
