Using a 6 Inch Rental Wood Chipper | How To Video | Joe Fixes It
How to Properly Use a Wood Chipper | The Home Depot
#woodchipper #chipper #clearingbrush
Today I rented a 6 inch wood chipper from the local equipment rental place in Cartersville Georgia to chip up a large pile of small trees and limbs from clearing the property behind the shop. I decided to make a video of my doing this to show you all that have never down this what is involved.

Thanks for posting this. I am about to rent what is basically the same chipper from a local place. I have a lot to get through and this helps give me a sense of scale. Like you, I do not need another machine to take care of and will not, probably, use one enough to make it worthwhile to buy one. Not cheap to rent, but cheaper than buying and taking care of it... Thanks again and be safe out there, stay hydrated! :-)

I had some brush and dead trees I needed gone. I rented a chipper for the day. My neighbors all came to watch...not help. I REPEATEDLY asked them to stay back and away. One little girl was holding her cat... i know you know where this is going. Something spooked the cat and it did a swan dive right into the chute. I couldn't get the thing turned off fast enough and ...goodbye Fluffy ! That little girl never flinched. She turned to her horrified parents and said "Can I get a new kitten now"? Swear ta Gawd !😮😅

Wood chippers prefer "green" wood with some moisture content to work optimally and avoid jams. However, that doesn't look feasible in this circumstance though. Nice video and thanks!

you make a good point most of the wood there was about 8 weeks old with the exception of some of the dead fall I had collected. That wood chipper was a little hard to use as it did not want to pull the limbs in very well. it liked to l work me to death that day

Kahuna: I was thinking about that. Seems like the moisture would bind them up? Try to bend a new piece of wood, it does. A dried out piece, it breaks.

If the chipper could swivel 90 degrees on its axle, you could turn the feeder to face the branches. Might save a fair amount of sweat don't you think? And if you would lean the branches' fat end on saw horses or something down the line, you could get that pile gone nearly as fast as you could move your truck.
@Joefixesit
@Joefixesit 3 жыл бұрын
Or just back it up to the pile the problem is the branch's stick together and get hard to pull apart.. I have been mostly burning since they video.. takes about 1/4 to be time.. I was not aware that I could burn where I was.

I see you posted this awhile ago. But perhaps you might still monitor the comments. Wood chippers work a whole lot better on green wood. It’s probably why you couldn’t get the full rated 6” out of it. Running dried out wood drastically impacts the performance. I understand that it’s not ideal to get a rental every time you get a little wood. So understand why you’re doing it the way you are. I’m also in the same boat, they are way to expensive to buy. The small ones are junk. I like to rent from a place that’s open a few hours on Saturdays. You get the day rate but have two days to break up the 8hour you get. If you use more Than 8 hours it’s prorated per hour. But It’s nice getting two days for the price of one. a lot more pleasant not rushing.

I absolutely still watch all the comments on both my channels. I wish I could spend more time on the fix it channel and I think I will get back into it vlogging some of the stuff I do around here. With the wood chipper, yeah some of it was pretty old, most of it was there for about 8 weeks. when I was chipping I assumed I could not burn it but later found out my property was outside the city limits and burning is a ton less work although it leaves burnt spots everywhere. I see my normal place has finally got a wood chipper again.. that is a happy thing for me. The videos for the fix it channel are mostly about mk2 VWs but I do other stuff. This was a spontaneous video that was not scripted or planned . I was making it as almost a joke to send to my brother and nearly heat stroked shooting it. The time lapse would have been longer but I could not work up the energy to move the cameras by the end of the afternoon. thanks for watching.. I love making videos and need to spend more time doing videos for this channel rather than the mass of videos I make for joe is Hungry channel..

@@Joefixesit Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The chipper was so dull that I couldn't chip anything with the chipper so all of the small unchipped branches went to the dump. My goal was to chip all the small branches. That was 45 years ago and since then I make sure every rented equipment will function properly before it leaves the yard. I recently rented a stump grinder and I inspected the condition of the each grinder at every rental business to not repeat the same mistake. I have bought various chippers over the years and learned that proper maintenance makes a huge difference. Rental businesses have a checkered maintenance reputation.

@@garyd5622 Ahh.. yeah plus people when they use stuff rented it tends to get abused but they do need to keep the knifes sharp in the chipper. something I looked at when picking it up. Hey, I just finished clearing up the trees on my wooded lot and I have piles of those brunches by the road. I can rent 6-9-12 inch chippers and they differ ~100$ between 6 and 12. Are you suggesting ordering the 9-12 inch one? I have a feeling that 12inch works like 10x faster than 6 inch one. Also, how long did it take you for this pile? My neighbor has a 4inch chipper, gave it to me to use it and 2 hours after I couldn't notice a difference so decided to rent a bigger one :)

@@Joefixesit idk man. it's ~200 for 6inch one and ~12 for 320 but the second requires the big truck that I don't have, and idk where to rent a truck you can tow with. Enterprise retns those for another 130$ so cost wise the 9 or 12 would be double due to the need to rent a truck. but I have a feeling 9 inch works like 3-4 of the 6 incher ones

I normally leave them in a pile for a year or so and then use it for mulch, in this case I already had a lot for mulch so I just discharged it on the ground in a low spot. this last summer I burned everything. @@JoeisHungry Well I rented and used a bandit 65xp for three days for about $280 Fri, Sat and Sun. I didn't want to work on Sunday but unfortunately I had to. I probably won't do this again because it wore me out and it was me and another person. I got plenty of mulch cedar, Leyland Cypress and bamboo. It would get stuck a lot with the bigger limbs and I would have to reverse it also when I was doing the bamboo it worked pretty good and fast but when I started doing the smaller limbs I did not notice the chute and it got clogged up and wouldn't start again. I didn't know what happened at first until late Saturday and figured it out that it was clogged up and had to open the access to the drum knives and unclog it then it started again the knives were not sharp which is probably why it didn't chip better. If I could have used a bigger and stronger one I might do it again because I think it would go faster and I got a lot of mulch.

funny you said that, we have been under a burn ban till this year and I was forced to use the chipper. Plus I am afraid of fire, but this year I had a lot of old large dead wood on the same property and went to burning, I got rid of a stack of brush almost as large as then one in a video plus a lot of old dead wood too big for the chipper in about 3 hours. I am planning on burning instead of running the chipper unless it gets real dry, I still have a lot more to clear as I am about 80 percent done with the 3 acres now. I was less than half way through when I shot that video.

Dear God who art in heaven, hallow be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, in Jesus Christ's name we pray, amen.
