After a weekend of training at the Sawmill Training Center Kevin decided to take advantage of the thrashed cars from our Defensive Driving Course. It is a common thought that if the situation should arise, a vehicle can be used to protect you from gunfire. Are you sure that is the case? In this video Kevin shoots into a car to test the vulnerability of different places commonly thought of a good cover on vehicles.

The FieldCraft Survival Channel just some video suggestions from a viewers standpoint, protecting your home from rioters but from inside your home, alarms or devices to utilize to prevent intruders from coming into your home, what to do if stopped by rioters while in your car and carrying. Just my two cents

Great information. Thanks for this demonstration. For future reference, the bar between the windshield and the front door is labeled by the auto industry as the "A pillar". Between the front and rear doors is the B pillar. Between the rear door and rear window is the C pillar.

The middle pillar between the doors is called the B frame. Going from front to back: A, B, C and sometimes D in SUV or van designs: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillar_(car) Great practical content. Thank you

We were trained that the door is more for some concealment. The A frame ( we were told) is better for cover but should be treated as slight concealment if anything. During a felony stop I'd like to see more of us park sideways and utilize the engine block. But again, you utilize your lights, spot and takedowns as well as PA for commands so we all use that V formation with two cruisers. Some high speed departments have kevlar lined doors. Great video! Important info for everyone.

Just completed a Centrifuge Training VCQB Course instructed by Will Petty. Surprisingly the A, B, C pillars provide the best cover while giving you the advantage of seeing what’s going on around you. Will an engine block stop rounds, yes, but you can’t see the bad guy advancing on you if you are hiding behind it. And you have to expose your head to shoot over it. Therefore, stacking pillars is the best cover if you must shoot from a vehicle. I highly recommend taking his class, it will definitely change your mind about how to fight from a vehicle.

Great video guys. Being that I'm a civilian with no real combat training, I have always wondered where the best place would be to take cover with regard to the use of a vehicle. If I ever find myself in an active shooter situation this just might save my life.

The department I worked for tested the b pillar with everything from our .40sw to a .308. The .308 made it through the B pillar but nothing else did, including a federal rifled slug. When I sit next to a turd at the light I'll set my head back behind it. Good video guys, good info that could save lives

I had the opportunity to inspect many destroyed thin-skinned SUV's used in Iraq before the insurgency kicked into high gear. Like AP AK rounds. No way to be sure. We checked trajectory using string. While the engine block stopped rounds, nothing else did. Documented multiple hits that pierced the leading edge of the hood, passed through the firewall, dashboard, front & rear seatbacks, rear shelf bulkhead, and out through the rear of the vehicle. Aligned my expectations of protection vehicles with reality.

Thanks for the video. Very surprised by the A frame. I wish I could see the passenger side doors; perhaps the second door might stop a 9mm, though I'm skeptical the other door would've stopped a 5.56mm. I'm not planning on putting either to the test in RealLife™, though. Happy Independence Day.

If you can it’s best to get away from the vehicle, especially in law enforcement. Bad guys will immediately shoot at the car. If you can move away from the car and return fire you’ll be at an advantage. Also having the emergency lights on will be incredibly distracting and disorienting at night. Good info here about what bullets will do to a car. 👍🏻

2 wheels and a set of brake rotors and calipers is a lot of metal to go through also. Most smaller gas saver cars have a 4 cylinder engine and the actual engine "block" is really small, the rest of the plastic junk like intake manifold and air filter box under the hood wont help much.

The A and B posts will slow down or deflect 9mm but the C post (between rear door and rear window) does not have as many layers of metal so I doubt it would be as good of cover. Careful trusting wheels as cover. All disc breaks are not created equal. Some are thin. Also, rear wheels on older cars and light trucks may be drum breaks with no solid disc.

That may have been true. Ford and Chevy (not sure about Dodge) did and may still offer ballistic panels as a factory option on their fleet vehicles. I don’t recall off the top of my head what the ballistic protection level was though. NYSP as an example had them on their Tahoe PPVs and you could immediately tell by the weight of the door vs the non-ballistic doors.
