For years I have been watching people build log cabins and wondering why they don’t use a gin pole. I have used a gin pole for many years. I think people have forgotten how to do the rope rigging. It’s nice to see you using it.

Exactly right - people have forgotten. That's why I always encourage people to get a copy of the Ashley Book of Knots and practice doing simple things with rope. Pulleys and some three-ply line will get you a long way in the world!!

Fantastic! I try and try to tell people to learn more about ropes and pulleys, but everyone seems in love modern winches and come-alongs. Seeing it done the "old way" was a real joy, and you can bet I'll be sharing this video around. Love to seem more about how you built and installed the pole, as well as how you rigged the various lines.

I would also love to see how you raised that hoist.

Awesome. I'm building an A frame for my truck to lift 400lb pipes to build a cabin 9 feet off the floor.

Inverted bridle pick would have made this move nicely.

Could you describe in more detail the various parts of the gin-pole system: one vertical pole secured in the corner of the cabin (how long was the pole?), one movable pole with one end attached to the base of the vertical pole; three block and tackles - one affixed to the top of the vertical pole, and two attached to the other pole (how did you connect the rope to the winches? And, how did you choose the winches to get the mechanical advantage you needed? Did you refer to a book for help? (If so, what was the title of it?)
