Where can I find the actual belt for this machine ?
@MikesMachines3 жыл бұрын
Innograv list them on their website: www.innograv.com/en/accessories/timing-belts/gravograph/2117/flat-timing-belt-f.-im3/itl I've also come across belts on ebay for the IM3. Just search for "Gravograph IM3 Belts". Alternatively a turntable flat belt could be used. The stock belt is 4mm wide and has a total length of 600mm but a slightly wider & longer belt will fit.

Wow! That’s a modern piece my friend. Back in the early 70s I used a similar machine, I think it was the one Noah used to tag his animals, 😉. It was very accurate and versatile for its age and we could engrave from 8 to 20 point (from memory). Made labels for major plant items down to meters. Our machine had 3 belts to get from the motor to the engraving head and the frame was solid so the cutting blade had a very broad thread - ½ turn lifted the cutting tool up ½ an inch and the tracer point was spring loaded to move from letter to letter as the frame and arms were rock solid. I have no clue what brand it was as there wasn’t an identification label to be found. 50 years is a long time between drinks, er, engravers, 😂😂😂. Thank you my friend for sharing you beautiful machine with us. Live long and engrave 🖖 👋👋👋

Nice to see one of these in action pretty clever simple machines that do nice work, I just picked my self up a vintage scripta possibly scripta s.a , has a few missing parts , now realized virtually impossible to find replacements unless have them made, As I think mine is a 1-1 scale and no adjustments to scale up or down,it there a way to convert to allow for scale adjustment,

I used to use one of these in the early 80’s as a fitting and turning apprentice making name plates up for offices and people around the place. Required a certain amount of skill as you couldn’t afford to let the stylus slip out of the grooved stencil letters at all.

same here, my father bought it when i was 14 in 86. It was good business for me, I made name plates and prefects badges at my school.

Hello Mike. I just inherited my father’s engraving machine and was wondering how I can tell how old it is. It’s in need of a deep cleaning and possibly re-wiring as well but have no idea how old it is or even how to use it. Do you know where I can get any info on pantographs? My father would have been 101 this year so I’m guessing it’s pretty old. It operates kinda like the one you are showing but it’s older than that. Thanks for any help you can give. Shirley

There seems to be little information on these machines online. The machine I have was released in 1938 and is still in production. More information can be found on the company web site. www.gravotech.com/products/engraving-stations-cnc-stations/im3

I wondered how to decide and set depth hight. I have a Gravograph TXL and it has a wheel to change the depth but on what number should it be? Any idea?
@MikesMachines Жыл бұрын
Assuming that you have set the initial cutter depth to zero at "0" on the scale. Each notch will add .025mm in depth. A common setting for many materials is to rotate the knob 4 notches to the right (.1mm). The profile of the cutter will also effect the final result.

This might sound nuts, but I recently found a old linkage driven pantograph engraver from 1915 that works like this one for all intents and purposes. I was wondering if its possible to make a coin minting die using this on SOFT iron that is going to be hardened after the engraving. I was thinking about using the stylus on a larger carving and "draw" the depth of the image onto a minting die. What do you think? Dillusional or just under hairbrained?
@MikesMachines4 ай бұрын
It might possible depending on the hardness of the material. However I suspect that you will need to make multiple passes to get the depth required. This means that you really need a template to get a good result.
@SirCumferencelel4 ай бұрын
That sounds promising. I don't mind making several passes. Even if it takes me a while day to make the dies, the dies will be capable of making thousands of coins before they wear out. Well worth the time.

@billywilliams88332 жыл бұрын
Hi does it not cut deeper just by applying pressure to the cutting head handle ? Thanks.
@MikesMachines2 жыл бұрын
The cutting blade passes through the middle of an adjuster that sets the cutting depth. When set to zero the tip of the cutter sits flush with the end of the adjuster and won't cut the work. New cutters need to be adjusted to set this zero point before use.
@billywilliams88332 жыл бұрын
@@MikesMachines Hi, so am I right in thinking that the bottom collet nut near the cutting tip would just rub on the workpiece once at max depth ? Thank you.

Hi, does this work in tool steel as well?
@MikesMachines6 ай бұрын
There is a non rotating diamond tipped cutter available that should etch tool steel.
@shelby504114 жыл бұрын
How are you controlling the depth?.is it a nose cone that drags on the part scratching part up?...mine does not have a nose cone so i can only do diamond drag engraving with motor off.
@MikesMachines4 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the tool holder is adjustable for depth. The laminated plastic sold for signs comes with a plastic film that you tear off afterwards. For anodised aluminium panels I use clear contact film. For brass you just polish it when finished.
@shelby504114 жыл бұрын
Thanks..my engravogrsph cutter depth is not adjustable so i cant use the motor on it...i just use diamond drag with motor off...it must be missing the micrometer depth part

Hi Mike. I just got myself a IM3 Gravograph machine yesterday. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Is there any way to reach out to you as I have a couple of question regarding setting up the machine? Cheers
@MikesMachines4 жыл бұрын
Hi Faisal, I'm not an expert on these machines but Gravograph still make this model so you should be able to get a manual for it that will answer your questions. www.gravograph.com
@angelahurd11214 жыл бұрын
Mike have you read the manual?.. Appalling! I'm sure I'll work it out 🙄🤔😂
@MikesMachines4 жыл бұрын
No, I've never seen the manual but it's pretty straightforward to set up - set reduction, set work height, set cutter depth. With a bit of practice I'm sure you will get the hang of it.
