Sound system setup using a Presonus 16.4.2 to mix a cultural fair - Event Video 33

We are back for the Scandinavian Christmas fair in Raleigh, NC. For this video, more time is spent during the load-in, setup, and load-out. This is an overview of the sound system setup. Hopefully, this video will show more of what is involved during the load-in, setup and load-out process. This event was canceled in 2020 due to Covid.
We are using a Presonus 16.4.2 console with a QSC PLD 4.2 amplifier driving Yamaha C112V and CM12V speakers.

I love doing live sound. I tolerate load in/outs. It's easier to push than to carry. Lose the moving dollys and use two multi function hand trucks. Stack that gear on wheedled cases. My friend and I had his system into about 7 wheedled road cases. Heavy, but you could do it solo. Love the video. Bring back fond memories.

Thanks for the video. Brings back memories when I did live sound. A quick suggestion for your snake. Leave 20’ of the stage end out of the case. Wrap the remainder of the snake as you did. Then put the 20’ of the stage end on top of the coil. Next gig you pull out 20’ of the stage end and than you only have to pull what you need to get to FOH out of the case.

This is a good idea! We setup several shows like this (years ago before we started doing videos) with our 32/8 150' main snake. As long as we had plenty of space to store the case and it was not in the way of performers or gear we needed access to, this always worked.

@@stageleftaudio I have much better luck trunk loading a long snake using a figure 8, as opposed to coiling it in a circle. If you have the snake laid out flat before you begin the coil and use a figure 8, it will be easier to get it to lay flat in the trunk. Then on unload, it will uncoil itself perfectly. Works the same as coiling mic or power cables in an over/under pattern. Keeps them from kinking and they have a tendency to lay flat on the deck. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy watching what others in the business do and their thought processes behind it all.

For most of those non-wheeled flight cases, if you didn't have ramps in the way on the van, you could just lift them straight down onto the hand truck vs. walking around with them. Just my two cents - great vid!

Interesting as always. I was wondering about the positioning of the two FOH speakers - you said they shouldn't be sides touching, so I'm curious how you chose the positioning.

Thanks for the comment. Not all speakers that are of trapezoidal design are designed to be placed in a tight horizontal splay. Some cabinets are... i.e. EAW KF850, EV X-Array. The issue with splaying the C112V cabinets (like many trap cabinets) has to do with the horizontal dispersion of the horn (90h x 40v). The trapezoid design of the C112V (when tightly splayed) allows too much horizontal over-lapping of the horns, which results in phasing issues (frequency nulls / coupling); basically, the resulting "sound" does not sound good. These cabinets (with their 90 deg. horizontal coverage) need to be at least a 45 degree front-separation to allow for a smooth (or smoother) horizontal transition between the horns. For this setup, I separated the cabinets (the front) close to 45 deg., which provided more coverage for the area directly in front of the stage (at the center) and to the sides of the seating area.

@@stageleftaudio It's the same approach as I take with the EV ELX-200-12. Comb filtering can be a real menace, but in many cases can be vastly reduced with placement such as this.

Great to see the PreSonus still going strong. Had mine three years so far, and it's never missed a beat. I have a friend who's an analogue fan ask me quite often when I'm selling my 16.4.2...it's going nowhere any time soon. :)

Love your content! I've been following religiously as I get into the sound reinforcement industry. I just got a used 16.4.2 myself but I've had some problems and heard they bug out after a few years. Is this true in your experience?

Thanks for the comment! Glad you are enjoying the videos. I have never heard of the 16.4.2 bugging out after a few years. However, I do recall an issue with the Firewire card used on those consoles (the first generation consoles; non AI versions). I think there was an issue with the number of times a firewire cable could be plugged into/out-of those ports, before the ports started to fail. I don't use the firewire, so I can't comment on that. The 16.4.2 we use is a first generation console. I bought it used from a gigging band; they never had any issues with it. The console has been solid.

The FOH and monitor signals are sent back to the stage using dedicated cables (within the snake). FOH is the main L/R output... monitors are the AUX outputs.

Are you satisfied with the Yamaha C112V? Would I be satisfied with the Qsc 3002 amplifier for the band and the crowd in the Video?

Thanks for the question. The C112V speakers have done very well over the years. I am very satisfied with them. In addition to the occasional FOH use (like in the video), they have been used as monitors (along with our CM12V speakers) for the larger shows. A QSC 3002 amp would be more than adequate (probably too much) for a similar show with the bands and the crowd. The QSC PLD 4.2 amp we use for this show is rated at 400w/chnl. However, each of the channels on the PLD were limited to 175 watts, which is the CONTINUOUS rating of the Yamaha speakers. The type of music heard in this video does not have the kick-drum chest-thump, heavy bass line or other prominent percussive instruments, therefore, a lot of power (RMS power) was not needed. Ultimately, it's all what you think you need and what you expect from a sound system for certain types of events. For the service we provided for this event, the sound system was more than adequate. Hope this helps.

Hi there. Even though I watched this vid 2 years late, I thought I would like to share with you how we wound the snakes when I did some events with Wigwam UK. What is the purpose of the 12k shelf?

For this event, there's no content above (or around) 12K, except for feedback. This hall is extremely "live" with high-frequencies and feedback in both monitors and FOH. The 12K shelf is to reduce the potential for high-freq. feedback.

I can't help but say that you could of eliminated 75% of the gear you had at this event with a rack mounted mixer up on stage, and used a tablet for FOH duties. Save your backs & work smarter, not harder.

Ok… next minute in…why don‘t you run your multicore off to the side and along the wall and then across the last line of chairs to the board… a lot less covering and taping even if you‘re crossing doors.

Don't forget... this setup is for the customer, not for us. The CD player was at the request of the customer. This is the only event where we use a CD player.
